There's are actually some decent vocalists ...
That irish lady, seems to have a bit of soul to her
And that Rebecca Ferguson has an amazing voice
Even that Cher was significantly better than her usual chavy self - must have been good - we are listening to Shakespeare sister here now :) (those of us who know Malvern well will know just how rediculas her bad girl image is)

That Rebecca has a stunning voice! Sort of reminds me of Billy holiday in the sort o level of emotion she portrays ... Her first audition was so understated and fragile, she sung to her self in front of millions of people with no pretence, just stood there looking at the mic... It gave me goose pimples it did ... That girl has soul... Whatever the likes o Simon cowel end up doing to her! She is very talented, and she might have opened her self up to mockery through entering such a competition, but it's wrong to take that away from her!

I think what those kids have to go through is incredible, they are lifted from amateurs with talent to tight proffesional performers in a short space of time and it must be one of the toughest competitions around.
I had a resentment over Cowell for ruining the charts. The reason we dont have home grown talent in chart music as well as menufactured pop is because of him. Think back to the 80s when top of the pops would have the sex pistols the specials saxon depeche mode all playing back to back to the nation during peak time tv. You wont have that again.
But ive made my peace with him . I still have loads of music i can consume from inovative artists, i just have to look for them in a different way .
Cowell doesnt effect my enjoyment of listeneing to BBc 6 music or record shopping. The labels are to blame for all the nonsense that has gone on in the last 10 years not Cowell or Steve jobs.
X factor is just a bit of entertainment for the tv and a lot of people enjoy it.
As long as the kids growing up dont take it seriously , thats my only worry.
Any way, the Labels are obviously trying a little fight back for the Christmas
top spot with that girl Rumer and i think it will work.

The best girl singer on there is Treyc.

I agree. Winning the competition because of supposed singing ability is laughable because they'll be given the same old keyboard created boom-clack dross and their singing will be auto-tuned anyway, if not completely distorted as well, so what's the use - they mime when performing anyway?
Wagner to win. once he's got a recording contract, he'll never sing live again.......

In my opinion it's a joke, yes there are some good singers, but how many have stood the test of time? how many of the winners can you still remember? the only true winner is Simon Cowell, the winners and loosers to a degree are only famous because of the program, not because they have been gigging for a few years round the pub's and clubs and learned the "trade".

Well, I think you'll find that Leona Lewis has done 'quite well', given how the Americans love her!
I watch the show for a giggle, mainly because I like seeing ordinary people being given a chance to fulfil their dreams and become rich (and why not?), so good luck to them!
I wish we celebrated (particularly hard-earned success) and wealth here in the UK as much as they do in the States!!
The British attitude of always supporting and admiring losers/underdogs instead of championing winners and successful people, or rather knocking them at every opportunity, depresses me greatly..... :rolleyes:
However, musically, the show is joke. Like Alex, though, I don't mind Matt Cardle, whom I think could make it as a decent recording artist, given fresh and suitably challenging material.
Rebecca will win though - and you can take that to the bank! ;)

Simon Cowell doesn't need £150,000,000 to live a reasonably comfortable life. I mean that is (given his age of about 50) at least £3,000,000 for each year of his life if he reaches the age of 100 :scratch: On top of that he'll be earning a pretty penny in interest :doh:
Another for instance. I'll probably get shot to bits for this given the reverance some people hold for this guy, but Paul McCartney doesn't need (at the last count) £650,000,000 :lolsign:
Some people make me laugh & he is one of them. Anyone remember Live Aid? This is where all the performers gave some free time to make a single to help the starving in Africa. As far as i know the money from that single may well have actually gotten there :)
Then there were the concerts & again these people gave their free time to help raise money! But who's money was actually collected? Not theirs, but ours! We were told to give by these people, while they gave the free time as already mentioned. I'm sure that there album sales increased due to the coverage of these people in concert, so in effect this giving of their own time made them much richer :eyebrows:
Meanwhile as i say, we were the ones actually giving money. Same as always, the rich get richer & the poor get poorer :mental:

Your're right Marco, Leona Lewis has done well for herself, she was clever though and jumped on a plane to the U.S. where she had to work very hard promoting herself for about a year, an exception rather than the rule I would say.
In my oppinion the best artist to come out a one of these "reality" tv shows is Joss Stone, and as i remember she didn't even win.
At the end of the day, i suppose it's like any job, a lot of hard work, and i reacon a lot of the people who make it through to the end, are doing it because they want to be famous, and not because they love the music or get a kick out of performing, and that's why only a very few really make it, they don't mind the hard work, the long hours traveling, promoting etc..

I'm never envious or jealous of other people's success or wealth, which you'll be hard pushed to argue that British people in general don't exhibit that unfortunate trait.

No it's not, but at least the winner will still have achieved more success and wealth (and most likely happiness) than they had before they entered the competition ;)
Look at Susan Boyle, for instance.
I like anything that creates winners and happy people, who then actually put something back into society - instead of the thousands of wasters, for example, who sit on their fat backsides scrounging (illegally) off the state and doing f*ck all to justify their lazy-arse existence.

Have to confess I watched the first couple of series of Pop Idol, then X Factor. Trouble is, TV is lazy now and you end up with a generation of programmes of a similar genre. We had do-up-a-house, we had so-called celebrity chefs, we had reality TV, now we have weekly elimination shows.
X Factor was OK for a couple of series but it's scheduling landfill now. Yes, some are good singers, but I don't recall great spine tingling pop or rock being all about a good singer - it's about a tune that gives you a high, a block levelling riff, a beat that makes middle aged blokes jiggy, etc.
I'm afraid it's just...dull. That's all.

It's aimed at the grandma's now and the judges make me laugh, i mean J.K. got it bang on a few weeks ago when he said that cheryl cole and dani minogue were talentles, i mean they just are, they're the product of the record industry making a quick buck, usually pumping out re-hashed classics that we've all heard before, nothing new, nothing spine tingling, just crap plastic music made be untallented people, for 12 year old girls to admire.

my hat goes off to the contestants for having the balls to give it a go, my problem isn't with them, rather the direction they are steered in, nothing new, just the same old stuff, safe sellabe, without to much risk, so that the costs can be recouped, and Simon is laughing all the way to the bank.
unfortunately it's not about the music, the art, call it wat you will, it's all about the money, and because of that simple fact the music suffers.
I totally agree.
The problem is if it were about real music, devoid of cheese and superficial 'fodder', the general public wouldn't be interested in watching, and so the show would fail.
Then the 'ordinary Joes' in society would suffer, who would otherwise have got a one-off shot at fulfilling their dreams, even in a superficial sense, and possibly becoming millionaires in the process.
For me, that's much worse than Simon Cowell laughing all the way to the bank, as he'd do that anyway without the X-Factor.

I think we just have to accept that reality TV, like X-Factor, and the commercial bandwagon that goes with it, is just part of modern life.

These so called experts so rarely get it right when trying to show off the positive attributes of these vocals, they are too wrapped up in getting them to sing popular or recognisable stuff... Of that Matt guy sung some Eliot Smith, sat on stage with just a guitar every week it would be superb...

I actually hope that she DOESN'T win so she can go in her own direction (unlike One Direction who could ONLY succeed by winning) and do something good.

I think it's not a question of whether the show discovers real talent (it does, even if they're not 'your cup of tea'), but whether having been uncovered by a shamelessly mainstream vehicle like X Factor, those individuals will ever be given, or have the guts to pursue a path which is musically interesting and challenging, rather than just commercially successful.
While there have be acts in the past where I've had no doubt they will succeed commercially (Liona Lewis, Alexandra Burke), there have never been any that I could ever see myself having the slightest interest in personally.
This year however, there is the possibility that there may be two - Matt and Cher.
Cher may rap as well as sing, but she's bloody good at both and frankly, far to 'edgy' to ever win, which is probably a good thing if, as she seems to be, she really does love what she does.
Weirdly, I actually think that the best result would be for One Dimension, sorry, One Direction (so easy to get that wrong) to win and leave Matt and Cher able to potentially do something slightly different.
That said, I'll not be holding my breath but let's see what happens.

Rebecca's 'standing on a washing machine' warble gets on my tits, so hope Matt wins.
