Hi again

My collection of boxes and cables have had a tendency to accumulate over the years. When things have been dragged home; it only leaves when it is broken.

First an overview of the setup in the livingroom.

About the Carver A-500x; it is part of a set I got back in 1999; I got the 3 cylinder A-753x standing idle in the basement and the preamp CT26V.

The rack is a Quadraspire. Back in 1998 I had been looking for a nice light rack ;) but most looked very massive. I was in Århus and went to KT Radio to have a look. And there they were.... I asked for a price and the guy said that they were just about to replace their two Quadraspire for something else. .. so I bought them. This is the wide TV version, the hifi version is down in the basement cinema.

Nice setup, Jan. How do you rate the Carver amp?

It was during my high school years that I started to get an interest in equipment. My first visit to a serious hifi store was to buy my Stax earspeakers. And over in the corner they had this setup that just oozed power; black and big square meters…. it was either Onkyo or Denon.
Since then big square meters equals power for me; a big brute hunk of aluminum just isn’t that sexy without the meters :eyebrows:
It is probably the reason why McIntosh keeps having meters in all their amps, even their car amp!!!
Granted, in the looks department my Carver isn’t as appealing as an Accuphase or Onkyos Grand Integra M-510 or M5060.

And how do they sound? In my opinion: pretty neutral. Maybe a little extra in the deep end, but that is just as likely to be my setup – speakers to close to the walls.

But they seem to have endless power; no problem for the A-500 to drive the 704s, or the A-753 that handles the front and center in the basement. They don’t break a sweat.

And for those that have wondered why there are CDs in my living room setup now that there are no CD player?! They block the view to the snake pit ;)

Carver amps aren't that bad (i have an M1.5T sitting here, really makes some noise considering it's size) though those meters do look a tad retro

On the other hand a nice current meter that reads up to 100Amps kind of insinuates that you aren't ever likely to run out of headroom :lol:

Nice to see one of the old Technics SUV amps still in use :) I can't for the life of me remember what happened to my old one :scratch: Think it was the SUV550, i might have sold it, in fact i think i must have done as it's no longer here & it didn't expire :)

Nice setup, i thought i recognised B&W speakers ;) Looking forward to the AV setup now!

About the speakers…
Originally I had planned to start with my brother’s old B&O MS120 speakers in front and another speaker as center. Well it is amazing how other peoples stuff can find its way to one’s basement. It was just to get things going, but alas my brother’s speakers units had liquefied.
But then I got an offer from a colleague. He had a JBL 5.0 set that he previously used in his apartment. But the missus had banned it from entering the living room when they moved into a house together….:rolleyes:
I can’t recall the model number. I tried looking it up back then but it appears to be a surround set that JBL made back when they had production in Denmark.
And then I actually won the Sib speakers that are being used at the back.
