I've half a mind to grab myself a cheap dvd player, the kind you can get from a supermarket. However, I still want it to be good.

Anyone know anything about these players?

Hi Lee, I bought the £30 Toshiba Sd1010Kb Dvd player a few weeks ago in an emergency for a presentation at work when they realised there was no DVD software on the laptop they were trying to play a corporate DVD on () and I was very impressed for the money, playing it through a Panasonic projector and M-Audio AV-40 desktop speakers - didn't compare it to anything else, but it certainly looked good enough that I would buy one for £30 and be quite happy.

Hi Lee, can i ask how you are thinking of connecting the DVD player to your TV?

Well, upstairs it would be connected via scart to a crt tv. Or I could bring the DVD recorder up from downstairs and have the new player connected to a plasma via HMDI I guess.

I know you stated cheap an all but in case you havent noticed branded Blue ray players can be had for £70 and in some cases less. have a gander at Richer sounds for a guide on prices. I am not sure if you are into photography but a lot have SD card slots and play AVCHD files which are becoming more popular with digital cameras.......just a though.

I have a £30 Toshiba DVD player, purchased because of it's DivX DRM playback functionality. I have been very pleased with it, but the connectivity is limited - Scart only IIRC, no upscaling yady-yady-ya, so doesn't make the most of a HD ready TV. But Toshiba gear is nicely made; I'd recommend it for the price.
