Hi everyone,

Great to finally join the AoS forum! I have been lurking for a while now, trying to gleam as much help and advice as I can, so many thanks for that, and I shall hopefully be able to offer some thoughts and opinions where I can!

First ventured into hifi back in 1995, spending my still outstanding student loan on the following:

Micromega Minium – cd player
Arcam Alpha 6 – amplifier
TDL Electronics RTL 2 – speakers

Have loved this system, but with starting a family on the horizon and a house with very little sound isolation from the neighbours it’s time to move on and rethink my system!! Thinking that headphones, laptop and DAC are the way forward – looking forward to the journey ahead :eyebrows:!

Well at least you didn’t piss the loan up the wall :rolleyes:
There are always alternatives…………..quietly move the neighbors (I’m sure I know someone who can sort that out for you for a small fee) :eek:
The kids; really can’t recommend that path. They cost a bloody fortune and just when you think you can relax having paid them to leave home they turn up with their own variety :scratch:

If i was you i'd keep an amp & speakers just in case ;) Just in case your neighbours don't have the same kind of respect for keeping their music at a reasonable volume :lol:

Welcome, Bryan. Your avatar picture - if you squint, I think you look a lot like the queen! ;) You'd be better off putting the headphones on your ears, though, I reckon... :eyebrows:

Sorry, but as you'll find out, I'm the Court Jester around here, about the only thing I can add to most threads is a little titter... Unless it is in the music section of course, where my knowledge and experience vastly exceeds that of hifi - which isn't hard!

As you'll see from my avatar, I have a two year old bundle of trouble - but don't worry, I've only lost one woofer, the speakers have only been pushed over twice, and I only found her gnawing on a cable once - luckily it was a speaker cable not power! :eek: The other day she was trying to get at the record spinning on the turntable, so I've quickly learnt that vinyl and toddlers don't mix! :doh: Don't worry it will be fine - as long as you stick to your plan!

Can't add any more to what AoS's resident 'court jester', Alex, has said in his welcoming post.

I'm sure members here will be able to offer you some good advice and recommendations regarding headphones and computer audio. Regret, I know little of these things: I'm still dragging lumps of diamond through plowed fields or listening to glorified Morse code, or, occasionaly, listening to rusty iron!

Hello and thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

I knew I would get some sage advice here, Alex the headphones do indeed sound much better actually on the head!! :lol:

As it turns out my neighbours are really genuine considerate people....which is very inconsiderate!!! Absolutely no chance of cranking the TDLs up! Floorstanders much just look like the ideal temptation to a toddler (or is that just me!) all those big buttons to push in :dummy: besides I think I would not be able to relax knowing my kids are running around in the same room.....if i were to walk in and see one of my babies laying on the floor after an accident I would just be racked with guilt...dents and chips to cabinet etc. From what I hear toddlers bounce and run off laughing:scratch:

Hmmm musical tastes...well thats a tricky one. Electronica is my main love, Massive Attack, Underworld, Air, Tricky and then overlap into others styles like The Cinematic Orchestra. Recently discovered Terry Callier on the back of some Massive Attack tracks and think he is pretty awesome. Most music really, Radiohead, Pink Floyd are 2 others I couldn't be without. My desert Island Mp3's you could say!! There is always the feeling that there is undiscovered music out there which is a bit worrying, so if anyone has a suggestion I'll be pleased to go exploring!!

I suspect we have similar tastes, Bryan - I love Air especially, but also Zero 7, Groove Armada, Hybrid, Afterlife - you get the picture - I'm sure we can probably trade some recommendations! If you haven't already found it, there is a thread called Spinning Today - What Are You Listening to Right Now? (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10) which is very popular, and does exactly what it says - so bung a few posts in there and have a look at some of the other posts for some ideas.

Just a thought on the speakers - I keep mine as tucked out of the way as possible next to furniture and against the wall so they are difficult to knock over, and then pull them out into the room and take off the covers when I want to listen seriously, when little people are out or tucked up in bed. If that's not a goer for you I'll give you twenty quid for the TDLs :eyebrows:

Hi Alex, funny you should mention Hybrid...have just come accross them in the last few weeks and really enjoying 'Dissappear Here'...reminds me a lot of Sunscream back in those hazy early 90's!!! Those were the days! Zero 7 really good, but Afterlife I have yet to check out....thanks for the reco. Honeyroot well worth a look if you haven't already.

Might just hold on to my speakers for now...but it's a very kind offer!!
