I guess the "higher dynamic range" implies >16 bit samples ?

More like they aren't going to compress it to all hell like they do the radio transmissions :eyebrows:

I've been listening to R3 on my Squeezebox at 320kb/s for weeks now, so what's the Telegraph on about?

Brian

Look at the date on the first post on the thread.

I've just switched over to R3 - I hadn't realised that the switch to 320kbps was permanent.
It's a big step in the right direction.

Just tried R3, and it's coming in at 128kbps.
What gives ?

Via my squeezebox Iplayer plugin I'm getting 192kbps, which is even more confusing...

Perhaps I'm using an old URL, I'll look into it

I'm playing it via the Squeezebox iPlayer setup.
It was coming in @ 320kbps the other day, and now it's 128kbps.:mental:

Which URL is giving you 320kbps for BBC 3?

My Squeezebox reports 128, as it did yesterday, but I have commonly seen 320.

All very odd.

I'll give it a whirl later on - it might be time/traffic related.

Yep just tried the current listen live via the Iplayer plugin...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/listen/live/r3.asx?livetxt=pubsub.livetext.radio3

...and it's 192kbps for me WMA

Regional variations perhaps?

If you want full BBC iPlayer access and you do not live in UK a £5 per month VPN subscription is needed. Route your access via the VPN and iPlayer sees a UK IP address and gives you all the goods. TV as well. That's how I watch TV in Cyprus.

I use

https://www.my-private-network.co.uk/

Easy set up instructions are on the Website.

I use the SSL version in Windows 7.

I'm getting 192 from the BBC website via Iplayer, so thankfully not a Squeezebox Iplayer issue...

Perhaps region, time, bandwidth issues...?

Unfortunately Auntie can't leave things alone, Will:steam:
Follow the link on Jan's (slate) post, then have a look at the R3 player settings on the net.
You'll see what they've done.

Thanks Brian - I was just venting a bit :eyebrows:

I have only used triode's plugin for a short period; actually R3 sounds good although the plugin claims tha it is 32 kb/s vbr... doesn't sound like that

I'm having a play with editing the R3 URL in the favourites XML...

Will report back after a rescan

WAD62

Editing the file is not reflected in SqueezeCenter (odd one that probably a caching issue), so tried editing the URL in the favourites editor, the result silence and an empty plylist...I wonder if it's because it requires a confirmation to play on the website...

Perhaps I'm being overly simplistic

Stratmangler

It's not time/traffic dependent - I've just popped over to R3 on the iPlayer plugin, and it's still streaming @128 kbps.

Bugger !!!

But BBC R3 is not the only Classical Music Station!

I'm presently listening to

Title: AVRO Baroque around the Clock (Netherlands)
URL: h ttp://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s55512&formats=aac,ogg,mp3,wmpro,wma,wmvoice&partnerId=16&serial=09f18e7cae527f037192d3d51c55eec3

Mp3 256

And have in my Squeezebox favourites

Title: AVRO Klassiek Beste
URL: h ttp://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s55517&Formats=mp3,wma,real&username=sampletime&PartnerId=16[/url]

MP3 256

Title: D-Dur
URL: h ttp://www.rozhlas.cz/audio/download/ddur_maxogg.m3u

256 OGG

Title: Dutch Radio 4
URL: h ttp://shoutcast.omroep.nl:8106/listen.pls

MP3 192

and many more, including some at 128 that sound extremely good, try

Title: Radio Swiss Classic
URL: h ttp://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s25582&Formats=mp3,wma,real&username=sampletime&PartnerId=16

MP3 128

I think the dynamic compression applied before broadcast comes to matter more that bitrate once above 128 MP3

[Note I have written h ttp to fox the board software!]

When it comes to classical musik Danish Radio P2 have provided over the years. But now the politics have decided to shut P2 down on the FM band.
Which meant no longer any need for a tuner in my setup.

But P2 still continues on DAB and internet... well no mentioning of sound quality.

That triggered a search for other good stations on the squeeze. Besides AVRO and BBC R3 (via iPlayer plugin) my favorites contains:
- from Danish Radio
DR P2 128 kb/s CBR, news, some talking and music info
DR Klassisk 128 kb/s CBR, "only" music
- Classic FM (London) 128 kb/s CBR, news, commercials

These can all be found searching for internetradio in the Squeezebox interface.

The Danish channels can also be heard via internet on your PC. Besides P1-4 there are a bunch of theme channels e.g.

DR P2

DR Klassisk

If you've not noticed on the Squeezebox forum, the R3 320kbps stream link is currently residing in the Special Events folder in the iPlayer plugin.

Many thanks to Triode.

I still wish the BBC would stop fixing things wot ain't broke:mental:

Where can I download the latest BBCIplayer plugin from, I need to patch it in manually on 7.3.3, do you have a link Chris?

EDIT ; Got it, I had an old IE link to triode's download page, but the latest version appears to be 1.1.12...

Sorry Will,

I missed your post.

I've got SBS 7.5.1 running on a PC, so plugins just update themselves when they need to - my iPlayer plugin is now 1.1.13

Cheers for the nod Chris, it's been so long since I had to do it I'd forgotten the link to the manual download site...

Well the upgraded plugin is all well and good, but there's no AAC support in 7.3.3, so I'll live without it for the time being...unless anyone knows of a workaround...:(

I'm using Squeezeserve 7.5.1 - the latest, I think. I have no problems.

Why do you stick with 7.3?

WAD62
21-12-2010, 12:14
Hi Brian,

...I'm running SqueezeCenter 7.3.3 on a QNAP TS-119, linux platform, and it is very stable and efficient.

7.4 caused many problems, however I believe that most were resolved in 7.5, I know of some people happily running 7.5 on a QNAP.

To upgrade on a linux platform effectively requires a manual re-installation, and server re-build.

I'm currently very happy with the performance of my 'system', 4 clients, 2.5k + albums, and I can happily use big playlists & synchronisation.

So my dilemma is stick with 7.3.3 which is doing all I want, apart from AAC, or risk all for a piece of functionality that I rarely use.

My prime usage is to listen to my FLAC collection, internet radio being a nice bonus for occasional usage, mostly sports etc. so HD on BBC 3 would be a nice to have but rarely used feature.

I may be more inclined when more HD feeds come online, but at the moment for me I doubt it's worth the risk and effort.

This is the one downside of going the linux path, it's very stable and efficient, but upgrades are a very manual and time consuming process.

:)

I understand. I use a standard windows installation and listen more to internet radio than my FLAC library. I haven't yet ripped all my CDs.

Thankfully I did all of mine about 18 months ago, all I have to do these days are the new additions...I strongly recommend dBpoweramp, and a good quality cd/dvd drive, makes the process a lot more palatable...
