Thorens TD160 Mains Rewire

Hey

Newbie question - I'm looking to rewire the mains supply to my TD160. Where is the best place to connect the earth?

It only has 2 core cable at the mo, so do I just connect the earth to the chassis??

If my memory serves me there is an earthing point on the chassis ( a small screw) and a connecting earth to the floating part but check.
I found running a separate ground for the chassis to the amp ground helped.

I've recently done this, andI ran it to the chassis, i.e., the screw mentioned, and then ran a line to the earth post on the IEC terminal I added to the new TD160 plinth I put together.

I'd recommend the Linn way... The sub-chassis connects to the top plate as per Thorens' wiring, the top plate then being earthed to the mains via a three-core mains lead. Any tonearm connected ought to be earthed to the top plate for safety (unless it's a standard wired Rega) and the external tonearm earthing wire connected or not depending on hum.

Alternatively, the existing wire could usefully be replaced with a modern 6A twin core (check that the positive line is the one that's switched assuming it's a single pole switch). The top plate should be connected somehow to the tonearm earth wire (via a tail tapped off the latter like we used to do with the Grace 707 on an LP12) and this earth wire connected to the amp.

If your Thorens has the standard arm fitted, you'll notice that the deck is earthed via the screen on one of the signal channels (Right hand one from memory). It's a good idea to remove the little wire link on the signal wire terminal block and connect a wire from the central chassis point to the amp's earthing terminal.

By the way, for solder to "take" on Thorens' eyelet tags, a little work with a small file is necessary.

Thanks for the advice, removed the arm tonight and had a good look inside. I will post some images shortly and get your thoughts...
