As the header says, i'm after one or two large heatsinks & all depends on the size of them ;)

I'm looking to replace the rather underated heatsinks on a pair of Quad 405 power amps. Seeing as these have been modded to go full power into a 4ohm load (200W RMS per channel).

Each heatsink will need to have a flat back of at least 6mm thickness & be at least 320mm wide & 85mm tall with the fins running vertically along the 85mm section. Would be nice to see 50mm+ depth fins (more depth = better still) or there isn't much point :eyebrows: Plenty of fins would also be another good thing :)

Here is the sort of thing i'm after:-

2858

I'll need two that size & matching or one bigger one that can be cut up to fit both amps. I know it's a long shot but if you don't ask you most certainly won't get  Before anyone asks i do keep checking fleabay

Cheers

Cant you fit a thick piece of alloy between the back of the original heatsink & the mounting angle of the 405 power boards?

You know i never thought of that  They still wouldn't be up to the task though in all honesty, though they'd certainly be a damn sight better :eyebrows:

I'll give this some serious consideration, thanks very much Andre 2859 Being made to look a little :o can often save some cash :eyebrows:

Try these guys. Cheap and quick, despite being in Australia!

I bought some off RS a while ago. Look HERE (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=retrieveTfg&Ne=4294922322&Ntt=heatsink&Nr=AND%28avl%3Auk%2CsearchDiscon_uk%3AN%29&Ntk=I18NAll&Ntx=mode%2Bmatchallpartial&N=4294957144+4294921059&Ns=stockPolicy_uk|1||new_uk|1&Nty=1&binCount=381&multiselectParam=4294957144&selectSubRange=Thermal%20Resistance%20-%20up%20to%201.3%C2%B0C/W#breadCrumb)

I forgot to add that I had to ask a mate to saw the heatsink into two smaller pieces due to its original size....

Cheers for that link Stanley, Radio Spares are odd ones :eyebrows: I used to purchase from the trade counter at Corby until they'd only sell to the trade , now it appears as long as you have a card...

Nice one fella, i'm sure there should be something there that will do the trick ;)

Lots of options is a good thing. Thinking about it i'd better take a look at Farnell to ;)

Finally found just the thing :) A rather large heatsink from a 250KW motor inverter :eyebrows:

A 20Kg monster that will need to be cut down to size, i'll get two 300mm wide (not quite 320mm but what the hell) by 85mm tall sinks out of it as well as over 300mm in height left over :)

Nice 80mm long fins will do a vastly better job than the standard Quad efforts & it's black anodised as well :)

Thanks for all the suggestions & a happy new year to all

Hey Andy, i bought it, not that one but another :)

300mm wide with fins from bottom to top & 500mm tall with 80mm fins ;) I'm totally sorted chap, this thing is humungous @ 20Kg trust me. I'll need to take it to an engineering shop to cut off 2 x 85mm sections of the 300mm width :eyebrows:

I'll still have well over 300 x 300 x 80mm of heatsink left over :lolsign:

Cheers for the thought chap & i hope you have a great 2011 :)

Sounds good. :)
Actually it's too good to cut up :eyebrows: The seller mentioned he might be able to source another the same so i kind of expressed an interest. Well it turned up today in a crate  Can't say i'm surprised though as it's a monster...

I'll not need to cut it up for a while & it'd have to be done by a machine shop at any rate, but if a second one surfaces neither will be cut up. There is a big stereo class A power amplifier dieing to be built with a pair of these :eyebrows: For scale is a pint glass :lolsign:

I reckon each sink would be good for 200W or more RMS class A, no idea how much this must have cost new but a few hundred pounds is no way out of the question. There is 20Kg of aluminium in each one..

Happy new year.....
