View Full Version : A high-quality clip from German FM radio - why can't Radio 1 sound this good?

Hi all.

I've managed to upload a high-quality recording of WDR 1Live on 107.9 received here during recent FM lift conditions. Beware though, the file is big at 161.5 MB. I decided to do a HQ version to demonstrate the great audio quality from German pop stations, and it really does show how poor BBC Radio 1 and most UK commercial stations sound in comparison. This was recorded from a Yamaha T-85 tuner directly onto CD via a Tascam CD-RW900SL CD recorder and then converted to a WAV file using Audacity.

My amp and speakers are modest but I think it still shows how much better the Germans are at providing good quality audio on their pop stations. Why Radio 1 have to use such ridiculous amounts of compression is beyond me...

I'd be very interested in opinions on this clip. Beware, I think there may be a naughty word or two from the presenter at one point. Hope the link works!

Regards,
Nick

I have downloaded the clip, it is playing now... Sting / Police. Anyway, it sounds good even on the PC, though it is no surprise to me that it sounds so much better than most stations in the UK. Plus, with the advent of DAB, I imagine things here will only get worse as no one can see the point of improving things now.
