Hi all,

Just a quick question. Is there or has anyone noticed a bit of buzzing distortion on track two of For My Sweetheart the Drunk?

I was just listening to it and kept noticing this momentary buzz in a few places. I switched the L/R outputs over from the DAC to the pre and the buzz moved with it..

I can isolate one instance of it to 3 minutes and 5 seconds (between frames 11 to 20 for those with a studio machine).

Could be my pre as the main pot is a bit dirty. Might have to do some more switching about..

That would indicate the problem is prior to the pre amp, so forget about your noisy volume control causing it ;)

Yes! I'm ashamed I didn't think that myself.. I mean, yes, well done you are correct, you passed my test.

The dac was previously down on one channel (well very faint) when I bought it but it fixed itself within an hour or so of being switched on and run.. Previous owner had it in storage and promptly sold it to clear space when it didn't work straight away. I ran it with the cover off to see if there were loose connections and at some point there was a relay click and a little puff of smoke and the channel came back (guessing an output relay was a bit stiff and when connected, burnt off some dust).

Why would it only happen on a couple of places and perhaps at a certain level/frequency if it was the DAC? Must be on the recording right, a physical vibration in the pop shield or mike?

I have a few recordings myself that often get me worried about the state of my Yamaha Beryllium tweeters & the midrange units now i come to think about it :eyebrows: The trouble is the speakers will show up any nasties that are there which often get missed on soft domes or suchlike.

Only by very careful listening on another system do these show up but at a much lower level.

It's probably the recording, i'd suggest a listen on another system to verify this. At least you know exactly where to listen ;) If you have headphones you'll probably hear it more clearly...

I can't hear any 'buzzing distortion' but the CD recording I have is clipped.

If you have a record player try and buy the original vinyl pressing,it's much better.

Fantastic! That's superb help Snapper. And more on one channel (the top channel in your screen grab) than the other.. Happens in a few places on the track ... I guess my Tascam is a few frames out then on the display. (Yes, that is the track and CD).

God damn compression I bet in the mastering process! Why oh why oh why??

To be honest, I don't think my system is showing itself to be amazingly detailed in its presentation but perhaps the Wadia 1000 and Tascam CD701 which I've only been using together this past week are revealing things more than previously.

Would check it on my headphones but they're cheap AKGs that have developed a buzz in one ear at certain volumes/bass notes.. iPod ones do the same now too, oh, and as do my Sony's! Think some nice headphones may be on my list of Ebay searches.

At a £30 minimum on Ebay and £199 on Amazon ( :D ) I think I can live with the distortion thanks! Only like a few tracks..
