View Full Version : Oh no, it's that time of year again...

I guess us city dwellers suffer with this a tad more than country folks, but then i might be wrong
I just went out to lock the front gate which i do every night (an attempt to keep out any idiots), & all of a sudden there were two massive bangs  A timely reminder that the idiots/chavs have gotten hold of fireworks & they'll be at it again for nearly 1.5 months of this year
Every year is the same, some worse than others. This is kind of early though which doesn't make the situation look good for this year :mental:
Ah well, time for another
In London we also have diwali so maybe you have similar issues with those celebrations too

That's possible John, i'm in what i guess you'd call a pretty well predominantly white British area (try finding that on a census form :eyebrows:), though there are some afro caribbean & sikh neighbours round abouts (all cool) :)
I guess it's possible someone's having some kind of celebration, Diwali or a wedding?
It just reminded of that time of year though, first explosions & all
Kushi Diwali Ya' all!
Hey,is there a Hindu God of HiFi?
Oh thats right, there is Amar Bose...
We've got the stupidity of Halloween to get through first, with constant rings on my doorbell on the night of 31st. Think I'll just turn the music up this year so that I can't hear the bell.

That never bothers me Martin, gates locked, you're not coming in
2008 was an absolute nightmare, for both Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night with a 5 week old Avatar, and last year when she was just over 1 wasn't a lot better. She's still too young to take revenge on everyone so no fireworks party or Trick or Treat this year, but maybe next... :eyebrows:
Just driven past a local garden centre tonight and they have all their Crimbo lights up ????
I'd send them away with more than a rocket up their arse!! Thank God our house is detached, a little hidden away, and at the end of a long driveway..... ;)

Move over, stick in the mud here:
I'm all for a ban on fireworks.. at least scould anyone setting them off before & after the 5th, & i'm certainly against seeing them still for sale the day after. At least make it a totally organised night all around where fireworks & bonfires are under control by proffessionals, if you can't make it for any reason tough!
This tho doesnt alter the fact that the Atmosphere on the night & after is totally shyite, it nearly always rains.. just imagine all the household crap people put on bonfires as an excuse to get rid because they can't be arsed to take it to the local tip!
It's all a load of ballerkz anyway, it's not done for the kids at all, i doubt most kids know what the so called occassion is all about, a lot of young kids are frightend stiff by the sound of fireworks, poor pets aswell but thats ok as long as so called grown up's get their kicks....
Another point & the most important is too many kids & grownups for that matter get injured by stupidty.injured in such a way they wish they had never clamped eyes on a firework.
So there yer go organised displays cut down on both enviromental & personal damage :)
I'm in a detached property to ;) Lock the gate, no trick or treaters (& i'm in a city) for as long as i can remember, at least as long as the gate was locked

I remember when I was a kid living with my parents, we used to put all the lights out and sit in the dark, pretending there was no-one in - or even better, I'd hide upstairs in the front bedroom, with the side window open, waiting for them to ring the bell, with a bucket of ice-cold water....
Then as soon as they were 'in line' below I'd pour the bucket of water over the f*ckers, and shout "Never mind yer trick, here's a wee treat"!!!
Feckin' hilarious - I used to pish myself laughing

I was in boots on Friday and the already had all the crimbo tat in pride of place in the shop. I know I sound like a moaning old git but it seems to me the real meaning of christmas has all but disappeared, and we moan about other religions being pushed under our noses and yet don't respect the one on which our country is supposed to be based. Don't get me wrong, I am not religious myself, but it seems a shame. Also, I bet if you asked most of the hoodied chavs begging outside the corner shop saying 'penny for the guy' ( their idea of a 'guy' being a shellsuit with a turnip for a head) who 'Guy' actually was, or what he tried to do, they wouldn't have a clue. this country is going straight to hell I tells ya!

Totally agree with you, Mr. Stick-In-The-Mud, ;) I'm surprised our Governments have let it carry on so long, to be honest, given that virtually every other activity has been outlawed by the Nanny State the last couple of decades.
I used to hate Christmas with a passion, to the point that when I was single I stayed at home alone with a pizza and about 5 bottles of nice wine... Now I'm a dad though, things are a little different, although she didn't know much about it the last 2 years I think she will this year - the celebrations will centre around being together as a family (with her various grandparents) and as one of her Granddad's is currently making her a doll's house, we have decided she will only get a few stocking fillers from us - it is very easy, but counter productive to spoil kids, I feel. Give them a satsuma like I used to get be happy I say!

Christmas is for the kids i must agree Alex, we always have family get togethers, all four of ours are not spoilt and are always treated equal, two are now working full time paying keep and have left School this past year so it will be a bit different perhaps this year, Fuck me i feel old @ nearly 44, life goes on though, soon get me bus pass if they are still available in twenty odd years time, looking forward to my retirment and soiling myself on a regular non alcohol related basis

110% agree, but the problem is when it's the local "hood" doing the door knocking - ain't got a problem giving a packet of Refreshers to a 5 year old, (nearly said a Sherbert-Fountain, but that could have got me in trouble!) but when they're 22 and toting a Magnum (the gun, not the ice-cream) I have to take exception!

Fire works and the like are dangerous and they do upset pets and the like but where does it end? People start asking the government for stuff to be banned like that and eventually we end up with no fags, no booze, no fun! I wouldn't buy fireworks my self ... I played with ones I bought back from a school trip to France when i was a kid, but even then I was careful (we only chucked the little ones at each other ;) ). Nowadays I know better... If you are daft enough to dick around with them and blow your hand off then that's your own stupid fault... Asking to take sways peoples decision to dick around if they want to is not a good way to control what people do. You make them illegal and you make a black market! You can't tell the masses what not to do, they will find a way to do it if they want to do it!! This coming from a person who belives in legalising and controlling all drugs... You wanna get the country our of recession ... Tax on smack... I give it a year and we would be debt free ;)
As for Xmas, yeah, it's shit that its all hype and it starts to early, and I hated it for years (Xmas at home was often a little strained). But I'm getting back into it now, I spend the day with hannah's family who are nice people, eat good food and get pissed for the day... I do all my shopping online or at very least order stuff on the phone then just collect it to avoid long periods in town... And this year I have decided I'm going to actually try and not be so cynical about it... I'm not a christian, but many of the values of Christmas are still the same, family, sharing, happiness etc. You can be grumpy and let it get to you or you can work out ways of making it work for you... This year for the first time I was a kid I'm gonna make 100% effort to stick to the later ... And if it doesn't work out plan b is do what I always do... Drink!
As for it being driven by money... That might be the case, but if you are clever where you spend your money you can help small business's thrive... Many small independant stores have web sites now... Your local butchers will take telephone orders for eg... You don't have to pump your hard earned money in to big corporations, spend it in your comunity and help the little guy where possible... That's what Xmas is about right?

Oh and if you don't like bonfire night, the 2 months prior to bonfire night is the time of year that certain fungus thrive ... You won't care about the rain and cold if the fireworks are still exploding for half hour after they have stopped!
Agreed, Hamish. I may not like it but I don't want to ban things like fireworks as I hate Labour-type legislation to throttle all the fun out of life. I'm happy for others to enjoy things even if I don't.

Stick in the mud returns:
A certain majority of people are idiots that are in reality not safe (you know & i know that a lot of teenages intentions are to buy fireworks & be foolish with them, thats why you are hearing them weeks before the 5th).. the idiots are the ones that spoil it for everyone else. There's fun Martin & someone getting seriously hurt through some peoples supposid fun.I saw someone get hit with a rocket point blank one year which was like watching a horror movie all because some dick thought he's get tanked up before playing about.I've never stepped out of the house on bonfire night since unless i've had to go to work. They are horrible things & need absolute stringent controls laying down, at the end of the day they are explosives, explosives need experts..On average around a thousand injuries occur each year, which may not sound much but where i'm standing that is a hell of alot, most having a constant reminder of the day they had a bit of fun.
Hear, hear!

So ban alcohol then... Thousands of people, and more, get hurt or die due to alcohol every year.
The more you take away these things the more people will turn to crime, more crime breeds more crime and we end up with more CCTV and more police and more laws... Then you need to control people more and you end up with shot like id cards etc... I know this is a bit extreme, but that is is logical course of events if you start stopping people from doing stuff.
Let's not take this too political eh... It'll only end in tears :)

Exactly... If people want to watch firework displays they can go to professional (safety controlled) organised events. An outright ban is unnecessary - only from people buying them from shops.
The fact is, there is simply no need whatsoever for fireworks to be used by members of the general public, many of whom sadly don't have the brains to know how to treat them.
One person killed or badly injured/maimed from fireworks is one person too many - end of!!!

Organised events are of little or no interest to the sort of people who buy firworks to play with!
Yep, I'm with Martin...
We need to keep tabs on what we get excited about, it just causes the government to make rash decisions to try and get votes...
They don't even listen to the government advisors when passing laws these days ... You get exited about every little thing that might cause harm to a the odd person here and there and before you know it we can't go outside without permission!
Hi Hamish,
Organised events are of little or no interest to the sort of people who buy firworks to play with!
Why is that, exactly - because they'd rather cause serious noise and disturbance, mess and inconvenience to other people (not to mention maiming themselves often in the process) with their brainless lunacy than enjoying the spectacle of proper fireworks display?
Aside from the obvious dangers, it's the total lack of respect and consideration for others, especially those of us with elderly relatives (and pets) living at home who go to bed early in the evening and want peace and quiet, not to be in the middle of a freakin' 'war zone', that f*cks me off!
One of the best things the government ever did was to ban smoking in public places, which allowed those of us who wished to breath smoke-free air to do so without inhaling in the contamination smokers were polluting the air with.
Well for similar reasons, I'd wholeheartedly support a ban on the general public being able to buy fireworks, so those us who want some peace and quiet have that right, without the ground being shook from explosions caused by ridiculously powerful 'fireworks', and the sheer levels of noise pollution, not to mention having to collect all the debris up the following day from our gardens..........!
If folk want to hear explosions and watch fireworks going off, then it can be properly controlled and contained in designated areas, well away from where people have to live!!
Marco.
Organised events are of little or no interest to the sort of people who buy firworks to play with!

Marco, I completly agree!
You seem to be under the misapprehension that I am condoning that sort of behavior??
I'm just saying banning or controlling them isn't a good idea ... I take the point that banning them would cut down on that sort of thing, it is the idea of the government stopping us from or limiting our ability or do more things that for most people are just a bit of harmless fun that irks me!
I'd be much more worried abou the sort of people who do that sort of thing doing more illegal things that you cant hear... Like mugging people, or worse!
There are bad people who do bad things, it just happens, getting all up in arms about it just gives our government more reason to do things that everyone here would hate... I'd cards for eg.

My post is the point marco!
I don't give a crap about lighting fireworks, I could barely give a tos about watching them!
I just don't like the government making decisions that take away my right to make my own!! As I have said, you let it happen once for one small thing and before you know it it's ten small things and eventually we have no rights left ... That's the issue!!
*BUT*, you still haven't explained this remark:
Organised events are of little or no interest to the sort of people who buy firworks to play with!
WHY EXACTLY??
I'm afraid I don't get the mentality.
Incidentally, I have no problem whatsoever with the government controlling problems where necessary - if something needs banning, then ban it, I say, so I suspect we have rather different political views in that area! ;)
There are many more things I would ban, too, if I had my way!!
We'll speak more about this later, as I have to go out now.

Here is another one for you along the same lines...
Take the recent mephadrone (meaow meaow) thing.
Some guy invents a new drug, that by all accounts is easier to produce for the makers and stronger for the punters than extacy.
Some kid dies, the papers tout it as a death from mephadrone, the government rush to make it illegal so as to look like they are doing somthing positive... But think of the up sides to making it a controlled substance like alcohol
1. Tax it make money for the country
2. People take it instead of coke/pills etc, thus cutting down on crime through drug dealing
3. You have a single drug that is taken by a lot of people instead of people taking all sorts of different drugs - this leads to more research into dealing with overdose for one drug and so less deaths
4.There are thousands of legal highs on the market, you make one illegal and the people who make them will make another one... That has already happened, there is a replacment for mephadrone already, I have even seen people on it... It's much stronger and by all accounts more dangerous
If the government applied a little long term lateral thinking instead o short term knee jerk reactions then they could achive so much more...
That's what we should be encouraging the government to do, thinking things through ... Not just making snap bans on things!!
Oh yeah an this is the important bit... The kid died because he was not only on mephadrone but on a cocktail of legal and illegal drugs, alcohol being the most prominent ...
So I say it again.. Alcohol kills loads of people, you want to ban that?you think they would ban that? No? Why because it is accepted as recreational fun, and because too many people would vote for the opposition I the government banned it!!
By condoning taking away some of my choices, in my books your condoning giving way all of them!

I think what Hamish means by this isn't refering to your average family, but to the type of pricks that were letting them off last night down my road ;)

The Vinyl Adventure

WHY EXACTLY??
I'm afraid I don't get the mentality
Marco.
What's not to get, people who dick around with fireworks arnt playing with them because they are pretty... They are doin it to terrorise people and do somthing rebellious ... They will still do the rebelious things even when are things are things you can't hear!
In fact sometimes yet are things you can hear! I get fucked off with the kids speeding down the road on thier mopeds at all hours of the morning, that disturbs me, and when they stop out side your house and wheel spin them etc it could sound threatening ... It doesn't make menwant to bam mopeds though...
There are also laws in place to deal with kids and fireworks, disturbing the peace etc ...
The Vinyl Adventure
11-10-2010, 16:09
Dealing with these issues shouldn't be about banning the fireworks ... Have a bit of lateral thought! Support for comunities with run down areas where the troublesome kids come from... Boxing academies, youth clubs with lots of activitys etc
That way you retain the freedom of people to make thier own decisions. rather than trying to make peoples decisions for people, encourage them to make the right decisions for them selves! ... Kids mostly to bad things because there is nothing better to do... Give them stuff to do and they won't want to make those bad decisions.
The more things you take away from them by banning them will inevitably lead them to do worse things...
Hi Mark,
I think what Hamish means by this isn't refering to your average family, but to the type of pricks that were letting them off last night down my road ;)
Indeed... Whereas your "average family" setting off (in some cases) 'World War 3' in their back gardens until all times at night in heavily populated areas, showing no concern for those around them who don't share their enthusiasm for loud explosions and mess, are *precisely* whom I'm referring to!!
Yobs will be yobs, but the people above are the ones who should be attending professionally organised firework displays instead, and if the law prevented them from buying fireworks in the first place, then the rest of us would be left in bloody peace.

The thing about fireworks though is that the Chinese invented them as weapons of war (yes I know they use them for other things too). So would we give or allow kids to play with guns, petrol bombs or guided missiles ?
Banning won't work as even in NI when fireworks were banned it was still possible to get them if you knew the right people.
The issue is one of attitude towards others, the lack of respect or care for others that is so obvious in our society now, especially among the young. A firework is nothing until some one lights it and uses it for good or ill.
Regards D S D L
Hi Hamish,
No, I don't want to ban alcohol - of course not, I enjoy it like many others do, but most importantly I wouldn't impinge the effect of my drunkenness (presuming that I would even want to get drunk these days) on others. *That* is the issue I have.
It's the exact same with using fireworks. Enjoy them in the proper place without inflicting your 'pleasures' on others who don't share them!
You can get pissed if you like, wee your panties and act like a lunatic for all I care, providing I don't have to watch you or be subjected to your behaviour.
I might like to prance around wearing nothing but rubber pants and a pirate's eye patch, but that doesn't give me the right to do it anywhere else other than behind my own walls.... ;)
It's the 'I'm entitled to do what I want and bugger anyone else' attitude, and the people who exhibit that selfish and inconsiderate trait, I absolutely ABHOR!!
Marco.

Fireworks don't bother me as such. what does bother me is our lack of interest in the history and reasoning behind events that we all join in celebrating. It is this lack of interest in out heritage that sees the passing of such momentous events as the recent battle of Britain celebrations without much fuss. It is also the reason that the Guy Fawkes night celebrations pass without a thought for the reasons behind our standing in the freezing cold watching fireworks....

And the fact is, if (the behaviour of yobs aside) the general public were prevented from buying fireworks in the first place, then people like me wouldn't have to endure the annoyance they cause.
Therefore, on that basis, I'm all for a ban on the use of fireworks out with of in organised displays. Remove the source of the noise and you remove the annoyance - simples!

Umm Guy Fawkes is a Protestant vs Catholic thing.....we all know where that can lead :(
Its strange how the English will burn a Guy but yet go all weird and prissy when in NI other things are burnt. Sectarianism is alive and well in England too or so it seems.
Guy Fawkes is the English version of the 12th of July.

I understand that, but the whole point is that the banning things is an overly simplistic aproach that is fairly unlikely to remove the problem entierly, and specifically is quite likely not to remove the main issue that is caused by the yob element
TBH, Hamish, I don't give a flying f*ck (it's not my place to right the world's wrongs) as long as I get peace and quiet and don't have to listen to 'boom bloody bang' on bonfire night, nor have to clear the mess up in my garden from used rockets stems, etc, the following day! ;)
I think I have that right, as I would not impinge the effects of my pleasures so inconsiderately on others.

Hi Neil. I agree with you there with regard to the politics of Guy Fawkes, but I still think we need to learn more from the past. However I am sure you know more about that side of things than I do. Funny I have never tried to find out why there are bonfires on the 12th?

I understand that, but the whole point is that the banning things is an overly simplistic aproach that is fairly unlikely to remove the problem entierly, and specifically is quite likely not to remove the main issue that is caused by the yob element
so do i Marco
If you remove the fireworks the yob element will just move onto something else, re-education perhaps is another approach but if you have to visit some of the areas i have to work in the coarse of a day you are not only trying to re-educate the kids but the parents and even grand parents as well, you can't educate a lump of shit.
We have just installed some nice outdoor fitness equipment in one such estate to get them off the arses and do something, yes they do use it but all the little shits do is grind it to destruction, don't get me started on unemployed and unemployable youths living of us, if these idiots are put out in their own community ( and earn thier dole money) to clear up and put right all thier acts of wanton vandalism perhaps word will get back and sink in
Anyway i have got a commitee meeting to go to and its in a pub and it belongs to my brother, i'm doomed i say ;)
Well, you're entitled to your opinion. Like I said, it's not my place to right the world's wrongs.
If seeking peace and quiet on bonfire night, the same as I'm used to every other night of the year, and supporting a ban on the use of fireworks in public places to facilitate that is seen as being "short sighted", then feel free to call me Mr Magoo! ;)

Frankly what i think might well do this country a ton of good is to bring back national service. You might not be able to change the parents, but you could start with the kids :eyebrows:
I'm also a smoker, yes i agree that the smoking ban is certainly killing off village pubs. The implementation was all wrong, if they'd have allowed smoking areas seperate from non smoking i think less damage would have been done. It would then be peoples choice if they went into the smoking area & everyone would have been happy ;)

Yep! That's my thoughts on the smoking ban too...
Not 100% sure on national service as fundamentally it doesn't fit in with my ideals .... That said ... I can def see you point on an almost daily basis!
Perhaps national service for criminals instead of pointless prison sentences.
I don't like the idea of people making decisions for me, but if you make the wrong choices and break the law, I have no issue with the right to make choices being taken away... As long as the punishment fits the crime.

Indeed.
I have no problem whatsoever with people smoking, *providing* when I go out for a meal or drink that I don't have to breathe in their fumes, nor have my clothes stinking to high heaven from fag smoke when I get home!
Like I said earlier, it's about being able to indulge in your particular pleasures without their negative effect (should there be any) impinging on anyone else.
When that's not possible then those pleasures should only be enjoyed in private, or well away from those who find them objectionable.
*That* is the bottom line!

Don't worry Marco, i very rarely go to any pubs nowadays as if i do feel the need to roll a ciggie i then have to go outside to smoke the damn thing :eyebrows: The consequence of this is i simply don't bother, ergo pubs lose trade & shut whilst off licenses flourish selling cheap lager & cider
While i'm not the yob element & happily sit down & listen to music in my own home, the very same off licenses sell vastly more cheap booze which they can afford to discount due to the volume they are disposing of. Again this encourages the yob element to get pissed & cause havoc.
I honestly wonder why i keep thinking i'm the only person that might be seeing this? :eyebrows: Then again, maybe i'm not...

I'm right with you Mark!
And then the come along and say they are going to blanket tax high strength cider, not taking into account that a huge percentage of high strength cider is drunk by folks in country pubs local the the brewery... Further exacerbating the problem!
No forethought or intelligent judgement
Hi Mark,
I think you make a valid point, pubs and restaurants should've been given adequate funding from the government to enable them to segregate smokers from non-smokers properly.
It's no use just implementing a new law without there being the proper infrastructure in place first!
However, whilst I accept your point about pubs closing because punters wanting to have a fag with their drink no longer go because they can't smoke, I would also suggest that there are likely as many non-smokers who wouldn't have been seen dead in some places before now giving pubs their business because they can have a drink and nice meal with their partners without having to dodge ashtrays heaving with spent fag ends and endure the stench of nicotine ;)
I think much depends on how you use pubs and the type you frequent. For me, I'm a country man at heart, so the ideal is a cosy and quaint country pub where I can go for lunch or dinner with my wife, have a chat in comfort, and enjoy good quality British pub food and local real ales. I'm fortunate that there are many such pubs in largely rural North Wales.
For me pubs are about good quality food and drink first and foremost, where the staff are friendly and there is a nice ambience, and I believe that having smoking-free pubs is more conducive to achieving that :)
I fully accept though that other people's priorities will be different. That's life!
Marco.

Coming late into this thread, it seems to me that there are a few points that haven't yet been made that could be pertinent.
Firstly, it was the New Year eve of 1999 when we saw a massive increase in the use of fireworks in this country. After that, any excuse there was to have a party, it seemed to be OK to let off a few fireworks, annoying the piss out of us all. The point is, that you couldn't normally buy them other than end Oct/begining Nov, so they weren't all that available.
Personally, I would ban the sale of them to private individuals. They are explosives and shouldn't be used by anyone who isn't trained to do so safely. Never mind kids pissing about, how many responsible adults get injured every year because of genuine accidents with these things? It's just not necessary. Yes, people may be able to get hold of them and abuse them if they really want to, but they would be relatively isolated cases.
I just read that it's estimated that 2000 tonnes of unlicensed fireworks were sold in the UK last year. How many tonnes of legitimate ones get used then? Has anyone ever thought of the amount of debris that this creates? If I were to take a box of charred cardboard tubes - maybe 20 or so of them - down to the street outside my local Police Station & spent the evening tossing them into peoples gardens, onto their cars & rooftops, how long do you think it would be before I got arrested for littering and/or antisocial behavior?
How many lives are lost in non-festivities related fires or accidents because the fire service are busy attending to accidents and incidents that could be avoided?
Reid Malenfant

Agreed, that'd help the village pub like a lead balloon
A question for you Hamish, was it M Thatcher that stated "there is no such thing as society"? I was just thinking about this & i came to a conclusion ;)
Most of these yobs/chavs we are refering to tend to smoke, so excluding them from pubs because of the smoking ban has removed them from seeing the people face to face on a possible daily basis that they tend to pick on. It's much harder to do ill to a person you are likely to be aquainted with, so the viscious circle continues
It's the old roman thing imo, divide & conquer, the governbent just don't realise that things have gone way too far & now it really is dog eat dog.
I don't know, it's just the way i see things. I can't see it getting any better though in the forseeable future :steam:

Ref fireworks. I would accept some sort of compulsory basic training... There could even be other measures to put people off the idea of just going out and popping a few off in the garden.
It's the knee jerk, balls out, blanket ban idea that gets on my wick... For previous mentioned reasons

But Mark surely there's much more to a nice pub than simply being able to smoke?
Even if I smoked, you can be damn sure that I wouldn't boycott my favourite pub that served the best food and beer in the area simply because I couldn't sit and have a fag anymore! ;)

I'm not sure if Hamish is one of these types of people or not, but some folk have a real problem with authority and/or obeying rules.

Actually i'd expect them to listen to me as well :) There is no way on this earth that i'd expect any decent person to order me to do anything unless they respected me & listened to what i had to say. As long as they did that then i may well go along with what they ordered me to do.
What i have found though is that once they realise you are a reasonable & decent human being they'll not order you to do a damn thing, they'll ask you. Because you now have a mutual respect you'll more than likely carry out the task that is then asked of you rather than ordered ;)

Right, I'm really not touchin that one... But yeah, I am so far from that pov ... It's such a dangerous thing to let happen, you might as well sign a contract with the words "I will let the government fuck me in the ass at every turn"
I'm really not sure we should go down this line of conversation!
I obey the laws of the land where the fit to my morals, my morals are intrenched into me and I belive part of human nature! There is a difference between that and being told what to do by authority!
I wouldnt for example set off fireworks ... I make the choice to be a good person, having the choice, and making that choice to be a good person is one of the most important things in life for me, remove those choices and we are left with what? A bland existance of drones ... Whats the point in that?
Excuse my getting a little philosoical here, but we need as much of the bad things in life as we need the good! It's impossible to understand extermes of emotion without the oposite...
Choices are fundamental in this.. We need people to make the wrong decisions as much as we nee the oposite...
I know this is a little abstract to the point, but it's where my views come from and I'll stand by them!
It's why I fundamentally belive in religion, but don't get organised religion ... The point of religion is to educate people to make the right decision ... The failings of organised religion is that it tries to tell people what to do!
People usually roll thier eyes at me when I start talking about this sort of thing, so apologise if it's causing you to do that... It all works in my head though! :)

I completely agree with those sentiments, Mark. However, when I was referring to rules and authority I was talking about the law, not necessarily to any authority individuals may have :)

Fireworks are illegal here in South Australia, not sure but I think it is nation wide too, that's the trouble having a federal and state governments you don't know the laws of the other states.

we have to go overtly politically correct to eventually reset the balance... i agree it is rubbish... but it has to be pushed to a point so it can sway back to the centre ...
l think of things like this a like a sign wave ... at any one point it can be measured one way or the other. like politics its self it swings one way to counteract issues at the exrteme end of the other ... it always ends up back in the centre, but for periods of time we have to put up with the negative effect of the pole it has swung toward ....
it all goes round in circles ... circles over time look like a sign wave....
am i really pushing my luck with the bull shit now? :)
An Instance of Political correctness gone to far
Man steps into a lift in a council office building, three female members of staff are already in the lift so he greets them with "morning Ladies" he is then promtly put on a repremand for calling these females ladies.
This is a true story that happened in a City near here which is run by a very left wing council with a fair number of staff of a gay persausion who have been put in charge.
Don't get me wrong i'm not Homophobic but this really sums it up of correctness gone to far.

I'm usually against banning things, but I'd rather not have what amounts to a bomb shoved through my letterbox by someone who thinks it might be funny. I'd also rather that idiot didn't have their fingers blown off, or blind themselves or others, or dent the roof of my neighbour's car, or festoon the neighbourhood with half burnt bits of cardboard.

We should also tell Brussels to stick their laws where it's rather dark & get back to running our own country. Kick out the foreign owned utility companies & run them ourselves.
Jeez it's no wonder this country is in a mess, it's being bled dry by other European countries, what the hell where any british government thinking selling our utilities to another country? Now from what i hear they are going to be deciding how the city of London goes about it's banking business?? Tell them to f**k off!!
Exit rant & apologies ;)
I don't see how banning fireworks can be seen as representative of any particular political standpoint.
What's that got to do with politics?
Indeed. And so it's over to our political correspondent Mr Hamish Hefalump..... :eyebrows:
Completely agree with what you've just written above, Mark!

I have explained my self to the full extent of my ability, even with reference to why I believe what I believe. I can't do any more ... We are just going to have to agree to disagree and move on from the fireworks ... But I still say, if you want to ban this then you have to ban alcohol...

We've got the stupidity of Halloween to get through first, with constant rings on my doorbell on the night of 31st. Think I'll just turn the music up this year so that I can't hear the bell.
Here in Belleville, IL, 30 minutes east of St. Louis, MO, we either welcome the ankle-biters and rugrats or lock up shop and head for the hills, only to return to a vandal's paradise. Just kidding, the coppers are out in force on All Hallow's Eve in these here parts...

Agreed, Hamish. I may not like it but I don't want to ban things like fireworks as I hate Labour-type legislation to throttle all the fun out of life. I'm happy for others to enjoy things even if I don't.
Good, even-handed, reasonable. Yeah.

i take it as i read it ;) ... i dont mind where you stand anyway ... and in reality i dont tend to pigeon hole ... politics is far to complex for such things... i was mearly generalising to make a point on the complexity of politics
we have to go overtly politically correct to eventually reset the balance... i agree it is rubbish... but it has to be pushed to a point so it can sway back to the centre ...
l think of things like this a like a sign wave ... at any one point it can be measured one way or the other. like politics its self it swings one way to counteract issues at the exrteme end of the other ... it always ends up back in the centre, but for periods of time we have to put up with the negative effect of the pole it has swung toward ....
it all goes round in circles ... circles over time look like a sign wave....
am i really pushing my luck with the bull shit now? :)
This back and forth is occuring in the US with Obama. It's just a case of party backlash, it lasts 3 or so years over here, then the other party goes into power. Uh huh.
