Great forum - I've been 'lurking' for quite a while.

My current circumstances (caring for my father) have necessitated a down-sizing of my system to fit his living room.

Sources: Inca Katana SE CDP; Linux PC with XBMC software streaming FLAC files via Trends Audio USB->SPDIF converter to DIY/Modded CS4397-based DAC

Amp: Arcam Diva A85

Speakers: Mission 771e

Cables: Ecosse Diva interconnects / Ortofon SPK200 bi-wire speaker cables

System is a big compromise - the speakers are the rear surrounds from my old home cinema system as there's no room for my Mission 753s (currently stored).

Musical taste is varied: 70s rock: Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk etc.; Jazz; Blues; Folk; some classical; some newer stuff (Elbow, Paulo Nutini etc). My father enjoys country - some of which I'm slowly coming round to!

Are your 771e's stand or shelf mounted? 753's take up hardly any floor space, the one proviso though, is that they need to be three or more metres away from the listening position to enable the multiple drivers to "blend" together best.

Hi Dave,

The 771es are stand mounted - though the stands are, erm, standing on a brick hearth. The 753s are about 10cm deeper than the 771e's stands, so some form of extension to the hearth (more bricks?) would be required.

I've tried the 753s in this position with an improvised platform and they sounded very poor - badly integrated, boxy, and the sound was very 'box-bound' with no appreciable soundstage or stereo spread.

As you say, they need space between them and the listening position and this wouldn't be the case here - they would only be 2 metres away.

The 771es sounded comfortably better (in fact the only real faults with them seem to be lack of any real bass and a slight lack of 'scale').

At the moment, my options would seem to be:

1) Sell the 753s, the 771es, a 77c centre speaker that I no longer use and a Yamaha 630 (can't remember the full model number) home cinema receiver and use the proceeds to buy some better small standmounts.

2) Try to re-arrange the room to accommodate the 753s.

3) Do nothing for now - I don't know how long my current 'situation' will last.

(1) is only likely to raise £250 - £300 quid at the most - which probably won't be enough to significantly improve on the 771e's.

(2) Not really possible as my dad (who has dementia) isn't keen on change and it is, after all, his living room!

I think (3) is the most likely path I'll follow.

Or maybe a sub, Keith? If the main issue is a lack of real bass then a REL or similar might do the trick? Just a thought, I personally don't need one, but a couple of friends use them to great effect.

I'm not sure a sub would help as it's not just a lack of very low bass. I used to own a REL Q60? that I used in my home cinema system and I don't remember it extending that far into the mid-bass. Another option worth investigating though.
