I'm sure someone here will be able to tell me if the above is a reasonable turntable. Im only asking as i recently saw a post on here where the poster had arranged to ship his G99 to Italy. This kind of surprised me tbh as i can't find a lot of information about this TT at all

Yes i know what it is as i have one sat in the loft & i used to listen to it as a kid when my father decided to have some sounds on the record deck :eyebrows:

So what's with the G99? Is it worth anything, if so i might as well do something about it :)

Up there with the Garrards ,very nice certainly worth some TLC and mounting in a decent plinth with a decent 12" arm.

Wasn't there a great G99 plinth for sale here, or was it on Timestep, or Crossover Network? Anyways, the G99 in good fettle and with a good or restored bearing, is up in the 301/401 class. All the idler harmonics are out of phase due to the vertical drive, fine for mono and managable for stereo if the plinth and idler are right..

Ha ha ha ha, Hamish it hasn't been used for years, like the SME 3009 arm i sold a while ago to Joe ;) Yeah, it's chillin in the loft :eyebrows:

Cheers Dave, i can see you know much more about this TT than i do ;) All i remember was it sounding pretty good, but i was younger then. Still it made an incredible impression compared to all the music centres out there :lolsign:

Yes - I believe it was the very same deck that went to Italy leaving the plinth for sale that inspired the original post.

The only possible weakness is the main bearing, which should be ok to be fair.

The tragedy is that Technical & general, who stocked lenco idlers and many other spares, has closed due to retirement i understand. the Lenco specialist sites may have alternative suppliers..

Yep, I do know these, having owned a G88 very early on for a short while and a number of GL75's over the years, which use the same drive system, albeit with a pressed steel chassis.

I tried to buy a Garrard 401 in the late '60s, to no avail. I used a Collaro 2020 rim-drive deck to 'tide me over'. I then tried to get hold of a Goldring G99, again to no luck, so I said "sod it" - bought a used (~10 hours) Thorens TD124/II and never looked back.

If you can get hold of a G99 in good condition, it will be the equal of any 301/401.

The G99 will be worth a bit of tender love and care agree with others about it performing at a similar level to 301/401 Be really nice on a slate plinth

I've still got the G99 I bought back in the early 60's. It was competition for the 301, 401 back then but with a touch of 'futuristic' styling for the period.

It's mounted on a Howland West plinth with SME 3009 Imp and Shure V15 original. A decent plinth is on my long list of things to do but it looks so nice and retro as it is that I am loathe to butcher it. Maybe, one day..

I'm sure it'll be in good condition, it's had a distinct lack of use since about 1980 or a tad earlier like the SME3009 i sold on here to Joe recently.

I'm sure it would, i just don't think i'll be the person giving it what it needs unfortunately ;) I have got so much on my plate i honestly don't need anything else to do :eyebrows:

I think i'll check it for functionality & then consider letting someone else have some fun :)

:eyebrows:

I'll have to find out if all is well with it & give it a clean up etc before i decide what to do John. Then i'll need to do a little research & see if i can attempt to find out what the thing might be worth as frankly i have no idea

I'd also like to wave my arms about in interest for it... Especially if it's White, as that would please the missis and fit in with her idea fr a retro tt :)
Obviously John can have dubs before me if you do decide to sell!

Hi Hamish, from what i remember it's exactly the same as this one here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showpost.php?p=154902&postcount=1) ;)

The platter is white if that helps :eyebrows:

As it goes I have sort of ruled out a 301 for the expense since my thread o enquiery into a White turntable... I was looking as a thorens 124 on the advice of andre, but this direction looks as though it could be less expensive still?

A TD124 is a lovely thing, but it seems that some people have found a way of making a really good living out of spares etc. The G99 wasn't afflicted this way but may be now if someone sees a good business oportunity going..

Don't let me elbow my way to the front of the cue buddy... If/when he decides to sell it let's play it by ear... I apriciate the sentiment though buddy!

How much is somethin like this be likely to be worth anyway?

I'm def aiming for budget vintage with style here... So if I can avoid "bandwagon" products I'd be happier!
Just showed a piccy to Hannah and she approves :)

£265 - they're nipping at the heels of the Garrard's. Does look lovely though.

Even so that sorta ball park is much more attainable to me than the crazy money for thorens or a 301...

All this talking behind my back:lolsign:

I advertised my G99 for months and months and no one took any notice, then when one sold on ebay for over £400 I advertised mine.

This was my ebay advert which may answer your questions about the G99 or G88 (same deck, earlier model no strobe)

Up for unreserved auction is my rare Goldring G99 turntable turntable, dating back to 1966.

Goldring were the UK importers of the Swiss Lenco turntables and the G99 was made especially for Goldring to compete in the Garrard301/401 and Thorens TD124 markets.

It became known as the poor man’s Garrard/Thorens!!

In certain respects it was better than the 401, especially with regard to transmission of motor vibration to the pickup cartridge; the Lenco motor is superbly balanced and the turntable is less prone to ringing than the bell-shaped 401 platter.

The G99 is no lightweight and weighs over 7 kg. I anticipate the shipping weight to be about 10 kg.

It is in good condition and was fully serviced by the previous owner using a good quality oil and he also fitted a NOS Spindle and bearing..

I completed the refurbishment as advised by the experts on Lenco Heaven who guided me & told me to strip away all the damping material (see last photo of how it arrived with me) which then showed the date of August 1966 being a moment in time when England could play football & win World Cups.

***THE WORLD CUP GOLDRING G99****

They further recommended to replace the power cable and earth it to the motor, then to fill in the surround of the pan with a plywood infill so that the maximum of the G99 pan would be in contact with the plinth.

It comes with the original instruction manual and mounting template, however the mounting template has been used previously so has some small holes in it, but it is still very serviceable

It comes with the original G99 turntable mat PLUS a GL72 turntable mat.

I also have the two transit screws to secure the motor and the original Goldring packaging.

Please see my other auction for the solid beech plinth for the G99.

This is a 240v model.

I will post to Europe.

I still have the solid beech hardwood plinth and the M5 threaded rod and fixing to secure the G99 to the plinth, which has 2 uncut armboards, see my advert in the classifieds.

Go and buy yourself a nice G99/G88 plus my plinth but do look at Lenco Heaven as they are the Lenco gurus.

I agree that particular G88 is well over priced for its condition.

You should be able to pick up a good condition G99 for between £245-£300 then plinth it etc.

For that money you would be hard pressed to do better IMHO.

So all in all it's worth dragging that heavy platter & spinner out of the loft then :eyebrows: I do remember that the platter is very heavy, probably solid steel. If i remember correctly it was removed from the TT itself & in my mad mind this might just have preserved the idler wheel a bit better

Good to know :) I might go hunting this coming week...

Yep, pretty thick to say the least. The rim is thick as well - i guess that made room for the strobe black bits on the bottom.

Lenco's have finally been "discovered" and prices are shooting up (I should have kept the GL75 I had untilo a year ago).

The next big thing in the UK at any rate will be the handful of Sony TTS-3000's around and about. This model measured and sounded better (less noises) than the 401, TD124 and G99 it was put up against way back in 1968, although I get the impression not many were sold over here..
