When i started my electrical apprenticeship at rosyth dockyard i was told i would have a job for life. Then maggie came along and cut the workforce from 7000 to 1000 over night and i was out on my arse, something the area ( and myself ) never really recovered from.

I remember the Linn newsletters we had around the time Maggie came to the PM's office. The likes of her, encouraged entrepeneurs like Ivor and other Yuppies and he revelled in it ("Bless you Margaret"). Interesting that the time of the big Linn dealer "purge" wasn't too far from when Maggie was ousted. I don't think Linn ever recovered and the mid nineties fanancial figures told a sorry tale as I recall.

May not be bitterness from his side of the fence, to be fair. Ivor had some VERY profitable years in the 80's and I dare say he lived very well indeed. Others in Glasgow obviously didn't and still feel bad about it, hence the reluctance to support the Tories.

I thought it was an extremely well balanced and thoughtful article from a man with a great deal of knowledge concerning the main industries in Scotland. When one considers that Linn was (and may well still be) a cottage industry what better qualification could Ivor have to comment on industries such as shipbuilding and steel making I ask you ;)

I can’t fault his analysis of the Thatcher years either. She certainly helped me out and thousands of other working men in this country. If it wasn’t for Maggie I might still be trudging off to work as a lowlife engineer after 6 years of studying, wearing a shirt and tie and contributing to the wealth and productivity of this country and getting paid peanuts for it while Estate Agents and Marketing/Media people earned thousands more for telling lies and contributing f**k all to this society :scratch:

I just think its great that Scotland has such a wonderful prospective parliamentary candidate and grateful that he wont be standing further South.

The thing is, someone up there must have backed him :mental:

Fair enough. Some people did well some didnt. If you were part of the ship building trade you didnt. If you could not go to university and relied on a apprenticeship you had limited options.
