We've decided to take advantage of the sunny weather and have a drive down to Southport, where we will take a walk down the long road there, like all the other old folks.

There is an 'emporium' there, which includes a couple of stalls selling secondhand records and CDs. Not been there for about ten years. They were pretty cheap back then, it'll be interesting to see what their prices are like now.

Not true, dude, there will also be plenty of crisp winter mornings, where the sun is shining, and which I love - and in the evenings candles are lit and we snuggle down in front of the wood burner, and the room's nice and cosy. You can't do that in the summer months:)

It's a fairly long flight, but worth it.

Did you say you had a relative on St Lucia? Not been to that one but all the Leeward Isles are pretty much the same for terrain and climate.

Antigua and Barbados are a bit too touristy. The one I recommend is this:

Yeah, Del's cousin lives in St Lucia, but she's selling up and moving back to Germany.

]

Around eight hours to St Lucia via a very civilised BA premium economy flight with seven inches of extra legroom (I’m. 5’ 11’ and could have my legs straight out in front of me). Food and booze included to [emoji846].

Plenty of films and tv available on their system to and a proper pair of on ear headphones.

I’ve stayed at Aruba, Barbados, Jamaica and St Lucia and visited half a dozen others on a cruise and St Lucia remains my favourite and you can’t go far wrong staying at a Sandals adults only resort.

Yeah it's not too bad, I just hate flying even in business class and even if I have loads of legroom. It's just constant misery for me. I would always go in the airport bookshop and buy the thickest non-fiction book they had (which was usually something about UFOs or Atlantis :)) and that would distract me for about half the flight.

I can't watch TV or films on those tiny little screens. I liked it better in the old days when they had a proper cinema screen and we all watched the same thing. And you could smoke!

Went to car boot this morning, and 9C, which caught me out a bit, as I'd left the house in just a t shirt. Bit of walking round soon warms you up though. Got a few CDs off a bloke who owned around 20,000 CDs (showed me pics of his shelving), and was just selling off some of his duplicates.

Even though they took up an entire wall in his house, he did say he'll never do streaming while he's got a hole in his arse (his words). "I'm not paying someone else for permission to play their tunes!" Sounds familiar.

Forecast to get to 22c with sunny spells this afternoon, which is a bit barmy for October! Cools down from Wednesday though, with heavy rain and a more typical 14c and then hovers around mid to late teens for the next couple of weeks. We still need plenty of rain - the pond in the next door farm must be 2ft lower than it was last year.

You getting your milk delivered now, Martin? Top man:)

Marco.

For about 5 years maybe longer. Trouble is if they have no full fat they deliver semi-skimmed. I won't drink that so I told them 'If you got no full fat then don't deliver anything.' Which they were fine with but I get two deliveries a week and this is the first time they missed both.

So on the supermarket milk today. One thing I notice about the delivered milk is it last at least two or three days longer than the supermarket one before going off.

Pigmy Pony
08-10-2026, 13:47
I don't suppose I need to tell you to pick your milk from the back of the fridge (where the longest dates are likely to be), but I'll say it anyway.

I don't suppose I need to tell you to pick your milk from the back of the fridge (where the longest dates are likely to be), but I'll say it anyway.

Sainsbury only had five cartons of full fat and they were all at the front, presumably someone 'faced-up' the shelf before I got there.

I usually get through it in 3 days anyway, the longevity is something I only notice when I've been out of town for a few days. But it does seem that it's fresher than the supermarket milk when you get it. Plus it's delivered in the proper glass bottles like the whole terrible 21st century thing never happened.

Marco
08-10-2026, 14:22
Recyclable, indeed, so you only pay for the milk, nothing else. All the best people have their milk delivered;)

Marco.

Macca
08-10-2026, 14:34
Not sure you can get delivered milk anywhere? I mean it makes sense where I live as the housing density is second only to Hong Kong (and they're right now knocking up some more on the old council yard at the back of me).

If you're out in the bushes it's harder to find enough customers per square mile to make it pay I would think.

Marco
08-10-2026, 14:42
You might be right, I'm not sure, but whenever I Google for milk delivery in various parts of the country, there seems to be plenty of availability. Remember, it's not just milk they deliver; most of them are proper online corner shops and sell all sorts.

Ours saved us from having to go out to supermarkets during Covid.

Nah, I'll stick with supermarket milk as I'm not one of the 'best people'. In fact I'm quite horrible really. No wait, yes we do get our milk delivered, along with other groceries. In fact Morrisons have just landed as we speak :)

Anyway, the best people milk their own cow, not pay someone else to do it like a lazy barstool.

Yeah, I know it’s not really the North, and I have no experience of Hartlepool any time of the year but have done Durham a few times and guess it’s similar. Leeds is currently top of her Uni list, we shall see.

The dog walk was relatively without incident. The pooch is a bit of a nutter, That's why I've been having back pain for over a week. He tends to want to belt over to other dogs barking like mad and recently caught me on the hop when he lunged at a passing dog and spun me off my feet landing on the road on my hip and shoulder. He's all show and doesn't really want to attack anything, just rather lively. But being a powerful sixty five pound lurcher, he can catch you out!

14C and sunny, not much breeze.

Well you're to be commended for continuing with the dog-walking in spite of it all.

Lurchers look like a breed with a lot of energy - I wonder if you could use that to your advantage... Set up a treadmill for him as a means to generate electricity, save yourself some money this winter :) I know you'd have the technical know how.

Dog "walked", leccy bills sorted, win-win :)

But then you've got to offset the cost of all the extra food the dog will eat due to all the exercise it's getting.

I suppose if you live out in the bushes you could shoot rabbits and feed them to the dog to keep it going, but then you need a shotgun and it all gets complicated quite quickly.

Ferrets cost less than shotguns, and are quite cheap to feed. Just have to factor in the cost of a flat cap. Do they have ferrets down south?

Or get the lurcher to catch the rabbits, they're probably quite good at that. But then we're back to the original problem.

When the ferret's not catching rabbits to feed itself, it can be running on the treadmill. Maybe you'd need two so they could work in shifts. Get rid of the dog alltogether.

I don't think they have ferrets south of Birmingham though.

Some proper blue sky thinking there, well done :)

Yeah I think you're right about there being no ferrets south of Birmingham, but the problem won't be unsurmountable, just need the correct paperwork. The language barrier might be a bit of a problem, but I'm sure it could be overcome by training the ferrets through a system of pointing. Works for me when I'm on a foreign holiday :)

Still might be worth keeping the dog as a back up though, Geoff could include under-performing ferrets in its diet to keep costs down.

Ferrets are rather nice pan-fried.

Lots of rabbits about, but Ted (Teddy) the lurcher ignores them. There was one right in front of him earlier and he paid no undue attention.

We also have a little Chihuahua called Chico. Barks at everything and is totally fearless. I call him the 'little git'! :D

Neither dog is mine. The little one is my grand daughter's and the big one is my daughter's. I just get lumbered with 'walkie' duties, don't mind really.

Macca, it looks like our services will not be required here. But I'm sure there are plenty of other problems we can 'fix' :) I suppose we could fix Chico's problem, we just need four Smarties tubes :)

Anyway, Anita and me are off for a walk up Rivington now, sans dog (we don't have one). I invited the cat, but she didn't even raise her head in reply. She's been sulking since I told her she's going to the vet's on Friday.

Nice out there. Around 19C, mild, sunny and a light breeze.

Loads of bunnies hopping about by the cliff path and nibbling whatever it is they nibble. :)

Just after I posted that it went sunny for an hour or so but now it's gone really dark so I suppose the rain is coming earlier than forecast.

I think we only 40 miles apart so only real difference is I'm up in the hills and you're down on the flats in the rain shadow of Snowdonia.

Well, the rain stopped, the wind is increasing and it's fairly clear and bright. Visibility is good, from the coast path above the cliffs, I can just make out Southend across the water about twenty five miles to the northwest.

Pretty much the same here, took Syd (dog) for his walk and it was lovely when in the sun. Small chance of rain later, but this afternoon’s jobs are all indoors so unfortunately I won’t have any excuse to procrastinate. So not sure what I’m doing on here, commenting on the weather…

Jobs on a Saturday afternoon? This time of year Saturday afternoon should be spent either at the football or dozing in an armchair to some music / watching an old western or some British B movie from the 1950s :)

Sue and Tamzin have gone to Norwich to do some shopping, lunch and then the theatre for a matinee performance of something or other. I get left a list of jobs! Not quite sure how that works…. Mind you, the Cinders outfit does quite suit me if I do say so myself.
