Just a gentle reminder to all who may have forgotten that it's the Tonbridge Audiojumble this Sunday - always a superb day out.

I can't make it in any shape or form, but could you look out for a cheap Garrard 3000 and some ceramic cartridges like the 9TAHC and Acos 104?
I'm taking my vintage turntable kick to the max here and alternative Garrards like SP25's, AT6's, AP76/SL95 A and B and 2025TC's are old history to me. It's got to be a 3000..

Wrexham to Tonbridge - about 230 miles according to Google. Well that's 3-4 hours unless you happen to drive an old Rover whilst wearing a hat.
Leave home at 6am, stop for bacon buttie en route, there for opening at 10:30, rummage round until 2:00 then hit the road again and be home in time for Harry Hill's TV Burp at 6:30.

I shall do my best but, interestingly, said missus is flying off to Singapore on business on Sunday morning so she won't be there when I get back. This means that anything I buy will not have to be sneaked into the house, and I'll have a week to fettle and hide it.
Consequently I'm going to need a will of iron at the event on Sunday not to buy whole hordes of huge, ugly monstrosities! :eek:

Unlikely to be of interest here, but I know of some properly sorted Spendor BC1's that will be for sale there (refurbed by Terry Miles of Spendor no less) - the owner is upgrading to some naughty current spec SP100R's

I did manage to take one picture of my stall but then the doors opened, the punters came in and that was it - sorry!
An excellent day in all - I sold most of what I took and only bought a couple of cartridges and a Denon TU-300 tuner (it has VU meters - say no more).
There were a few items of interest, including a lovely Sony PS-8750 which David Price bought when he arrived, but I managed to excercise previously unheard-of levels of self control, as there is something on eBay at the moment that I want desperately, and which will not be cheap! ;)

Excellent. If the vintage valves are in good nick and fully tested and matched in pairs (or quads), then I might well obtain a few. However, if it's just boxes full of old 'tat', and you don't know what's working and what isn't, then I'll pass.
New valves don't really interest me, as I don't use them. Rarely, in my experience, do they sound as good as genuine NOS ones.

However, maybe someone somewhere bought a lovely JVC or Sony in the 70s and rarely used it before it went up into the attic, only to be brought down again for sale at the audio jumble?

Put it this way Marco. That deck communicated music as well as the fruitbox did at the time - and I mean that as a true compliment - and there was a lack of grit and grain which the LP12/Grace 707/Supex 900E of the period had by the bucketful.
I'd be surprised if the 8750 was very much inferior to yours, it was so good back then. The arm was unusual too, with twin points giving vertical freedom instead of ballraces. I think the mat was fluid filled too, giving excellent support and helping to absorb any vibrations that got through.

Well we went along but weren’t that taken with it. Loverly weather but we were late (arrived at 11.30) and by then there didn’t seem that much worth looking at. It is of course a ‘jumble’ so one can’t expect much apart from boxes of junk (sorry bargains), and perhaps the odd object worth a thought. But the novelty has worn off for these types of event, and unlike with boot fairs and charity shops where one might just pick up a true bargain there seemed few here.
In a smaller room there was a demonstration of long playing records. But the music wouldn’t have taxed a ghetto blaster let alone the modified ELS57s and exotic valve amplification they were using.
As usual came away empty handed thinking that I should learn my lesson and not bother going to these things, but I don’t. Sorry to be a bit negative here and hope others had a happier time.:)

It would certainly be a complete waste of time for me driving 230 miles there and back from Wrexham if it was mostly full of overpriced tat, with simply the odd decent item in amongst the dross.....
I'm looking for high-quality vintage gear in good condition and in full working order - the sort of stuff you can find on Ebay, and such like, although with the ability to physically examine what I'm buying first, and where I can haggle with the price.
Should I give such events a miss, then?

Vintage bargains are getting more difficult to find as sellers wise up to how much they can sell their old tat for.
I spent years moaning that my vintage museum was worth very little when virtually anything else vintage was fetching sill money. Now things have turned round and all old hi-fi equipment is fetching ridiculous amounts of money. One one hand I'm pleased that even my box of 'bits' is worth a couple of grand but on the other hand I can't buy in the little gems I crave.

Therein lies the problem I'm afraid. Normal £5 entry is from 10:30 and £10 Early Entry is from 9:30 and the enthusiasts with stalls always take a quick walk round even before this. Consequently all the best stuff is long gone by 11:30. (at one event a few years back, I had taken over £200 before the Early entries came in!).
Marco - if you're coming down for the next one stay overnight somewhere nearby and make sure you're in the queue by 9:00!

Lol - now it's starting to get rather expensive, as not only would it cost me around £60 (return) in fuel, but I'd have to factor in an overnight stay in a hotel.... ;)
I would certainly hope that it'd be worth it, and don't mind getting there for 8am, if it meant I'd be first in the queue :eyebrows:

Used to do this for the Vintage Comms. and at ham shows, talking with a friend on the radio while we scanned the hall from each side. I was keener then in my ‘aqisitional phase’ (and unmarried), though as the years pass these various fairs seem to become less interesting. I was spoilt by hanging around the BBC Redundant stores when they almost gave away their unwanted kit; Sp10’s for 100 quid, Nagras for £250, A80s for £200. I bought a £9000 video analyser for £20, but that’s all over now and it’s Grotbay or these shows now. :doh:
One thing I have found is to keep an eye out for out of place items. I bought a couple of watches at a camera fair and passed on a Seiko chronometer for 50 quid, which now goes for £500+. Another time there were a couple of Nagra recorders. At a ham convention a friend spotted a ‘funny old video’ which he offered £50 knowing it to be a £2500 professional portable worth at least £600. And so at Tonbridge I spotted a celestial compass which was once to be found in WW2 bomber and another in a glass case in the Science Museum, but even that didn’t incline me to get my wallet out (or for the £1k Sp10).
However, may I book a place in the queue in front of Marco’s garage door please?:)

I remember buying a pair of immaculate Rogers/BBC LS 5/8 speakers complete with Quad 405-2 AM 8/16 amplifiers for £50.00...
I friend sold a pair of these recently with amplifiers for 2 grand....

Mind you it's going a little bit silly the other way now - Studer A80's for £3000 - really and honestly a little tiny bit high - 500-800 quid in resonable condition is fair for these and if you don't believe that just wait until something goes bang and you have to fix one....

Technically they were "available" but you certainly had to be in the know as it were with the folk running the place - also BBC staff were not allowed to purchase from redundant stores so if you did indeed work for them you would have to get an independant buyer to help you out....

You're a lucky boy having been able to buy that sort of stuff, as the top-notch professional broadcasting equipment you mention is usually miles better than domestic hi-fi equipment, sonically, and most certainly in terms of engineering quality. However, the two usually go hand-in-hand.
I've loved to obtain an EMT broadcast CD player, or any of the Studer equipment. I was also rather intrigued by the 'BBC Pantograph' tonearm (an S-shape type) fitted to an SP10 in a 'BBC-type' console, which was featured in last month's Hi-fi News - don't know if you read the article or know of the tonearm I'm referring to?
But if you know of where any of this stuff is for sale, please let me know and whom to contact :)

These occasionally appear on eBay. However, despite their admirable build quality, I doubt if they are as good as your Sony sonically.

I heard a rumour years ago that when BBC Radio Solent moved out of South Western House in Southampton, a load of BBC-modified Garrard 301s went into a skip out the back. I still wake up at night hoping this wasn't true, or they were suitably rescued - a BBC-modified 301 is still second on my "turntable wants" list!

I went too - there were still some good bargains till nearer the end. A Yamaha turntable something 800 (the type that Janl100 used to own) in minty mint condition with Ortofon MC 30 (I think) went home unsold for £275.. Often fetch £350 without the £100 (ebay price) cart. The guy also had a bodge modified Oracle Deplhi (used a Linn Axis PSU and MASSIVE motor with an extra perspex layer underneath to accommodate it) that needed minimal work on the switches that everyone kept saying was a real basket case - £250 I think. Wasn't a basket case, is just what people are like if things aren't perfect. I bought a nice Nakamichi 550 right at the end for £30 - just needs some new belts. Also found a Kube Pro(!) that I can use with my KEF 107s when they're fixed - mega rare but had to buy the Kef P60 speakers with it.. I bet they wouldn't have sold otherwise, the other pair of P60s with the active quad 520 didn't sell.
Personally, I found people were looking to buy for much lower than Ebay prices so weren't touching some very good things. Only the things that sell for silly prices normally on Ebay were disappearing quickly, the one EMT 938, Spendor BC1s etc.
Basically, as is quite normal in everyday life, people aren't willing to take risks and only buy things that everyone else says are good or can sell for profit. If you know your stuff and looking for good gear, not to make profits, there was a lot of good stuff there till late. Only thing though is you need to know the faces or otherwise you're effectively buying as per a car boot, untested.
Very much like buying on a forum versus Ebay really - people are much more cautious and dismissive on forums but go crazy and take risks on Ebay.
A couple of mates shared a stall, they managed to sell most of their stuff as it was resonabaly priced unlike some of the other stuff there for sale, so most of them took their overpriced stuff home again, flavour of the month due to some review always sends prices up to unrealistic levels. i shared a stall with the same mates a couple of years ago and i ended up spending more than i sold :doh: but it was a nice day out.
Yamaha YP800? I lusted after one back in 1975.......

The original had a more streamlined solid headshell and it's not a deck I ever see these days.
Mat aside, I think the YP800 could still deliver the goods, correctly sited and pickup'd. Like many great Jap products on sale in the UK at this time, it was gone before it established itself...

I can't stand it any more - I never was any good at wind-ups..... Look at my current avatar with a squint - It's Adam/Beobloke's old AT6. I have a Stanton 500 mounted up in a spare shell and a large stack of singles to play on it. If it's anything like its many brethren from this stable, it'll rumble along with the music and the mech will throw the arm around quite comically (worse than its non counterbalanced siblings)...
P.S. I do hope I hate the little Garrard, 'cos if I love it I'll need to get re-acquainted with the Lab 80, probably the best auto deck they ever made, and even the A70 and its Lab predecessor looks interesting (I once owned a record player with an RC88U in it)

The mystery Garrard picture you posted is the Lab A and I have one of those to get rid of as well if you're interested!
Incidentally the Yamaha at the jumble was the PF-800 and not the YP-800. I stopped by to drool over it more than once but, again, excercised restraint due to the mystery item on eBay that is still holding my attention...;)

If Adam's the man I think he is, it won't be shagged or ropey, just not a "High Fidelity" product - I did say it was beyond compare didn't I????? :D
I've had a couple of brilliant sessions with the Thorens/Decca this last week and am happy with my "bought for peanuts" setup. The BC2's ought to be turned into SP1's to be honest, but I have some internal wiring to explore first. The crossovers were matched, graded and balanced to the drive-unit "coloured blobs," so just replacing all the caps etc without testing the before and after results for levels etc wouldn't be an option on these, sadly.

Ooooh, I can see my new turntable upgrade there :D I was wondering what colour scheme the AT6 had, as the later ones were usually in dark grey and charcoal black with brushed-silver colour trimmings...
Adam, why not post a list of stuff you want to sell on here. I know it'll have to be sent out, but you should be able to get rid of a lot, unless you're deliberately keeping it for the Jumbles...... PM me on the Lab A please...

Funny you should say that - I was having a conversation with someone at the Jumble regarding AT6 colours and most of the ones I have seen have been the cream and brown - I've only ever seen a couple of the grey ones.
As to sale items, I don't deliberately keep stuff for the jumbles but am so disorganised when it comes to repairing and fettling items that they are a good excuse for me to get my head down for a week or two and sort some items out!
The Beogram phono stages do appear now and then - I'll keep my eyes open for you.

What were the magazines Adam?
I didn't get much chance to look around cos people kept chatting for ages at our stall.. I have to admit that I do actually get bored very quickly talking about hifi! Hahaha... You wouldn't believe it and my girlfriend doesn't believe me either - think it's because my thoughts on hifi are more feelings and certain wants but when people want to discuss things I find it just awkward as I don't have much to say and so end up filling in with BS (at least what it sounds like to myself).
I took along good stuff in my opinion and know what I can get for it on Ebay so was asking a bit less than Ebay prices. No point selling stuff cheap just for the occasion - that could be the difference between saving up for that new bit of gear you want or falling way short! Better off selling it to enthusiast on forums too to avoid Ebay.
Still, I put some BC1s down and they were sold to a Chinese (a guess) guy within the minute at slightly above average Ebay price, then sold my Linn for probably £100 below ebay price just to get rid of it.
Definitely a place to buy in my opinion rather than sell (unless you want to sell your BC1s or other stuff popular in the East). Or take along more nerdy stuff like lab gear that doesn't always sell on Ebay either.

Studio Sound magazines from the early 80s. I bought them at a car boot sale a couple of months back to read and they were quite interesting. There was an article in one about a new format called "Compact Disc" which sounds very clever, although I can't help thinking it has a few flaws. It'll be interesting to see if it catches on.......;)

I used to subscribe to Studio Sound. I found it far more interesting than the, then, current audio press of the '80s; what with all their 'Linn/Naim' hysterical nonsense! :(

The original had a more streamlined solid headshell and it's not a deck I ever see these days.
Mat aside, I think the YP800 could still deliver the goods, correctly sited and pickup'd. Like many great Jap products on sale in the UK at this time, it was gone before it established itself...
Not for me at this time though..
The yp is a good deck, that photo has the wrong headshell as you say...
i bought one a few years ago.. it's a very nice sounding deck... i use the old decks (124's really) in favour of it .. just because i like them more.. i should get it out for another go...mine has the cover missing ... otherwise its really nice.
i have a very nice old garard in the garage too... a good place for it..
i think thats an ap76..

What's with the sad face? You know our policy with regard to new members and introductions.
Also, 'Bluedroog' joined in January this year before the current system was implemented, hence why I've had to remind him of the procedure, rather than the system automatically prompting him to fill in his profile details...
However, there will gradually be less of these types of posts from the management team, and eventually none whatsoever, once the new system kicks in for everyone :)
