Is this supposed to be the first day of Spring? 8C and cloudy, with a chance of rain soon.

Pigmy Pony
01-04-2026, 06:52
No, the "meteorological" start of spring was one month ago, and the "astronomical" start of spring was on the 20th March this year (spring equinox, which varies a bit each year due to the tilt of the earth).

We had some debate about this a few weeks ago, and I moved my choice from astronomical to meteorological, as it puts midsummer's day closer to, you know, the middle of summer :)

Miserable and grey out there, a bit milder than yesterday. Rain expected this afternoon.

6c and wet with strong winds forecast for the weekend

Alex_UK
03-04-2026, 08:00
Yesterday was a lot better than the BBC said it would be, looking more accurate today - 8c currently and drizzle, but predicted to clear up and then the rest of the weekend looks dry and mild (up to 16c) with some sunny spells.

Macca
03-04-2026, 09:57
dull 11C and windy. Sunny showers later, maybe.

The long Good Friday...

No point going anywhere. Trains don't run, buses on Sunday service so, in other words, no service at all. Main roads packed with cars full of people 'Having a day out'.

Only been out to put some rubbish in the bin. Surprisingly mild, feels warmer outside than in. Not a leaf moving. Spent a bit of time sniffing the air and then the wind must have spotted me and it got up. Back inside sharpish.

Dead quite here only seen two cars go past in an hour and not a soul on the street.

Cheer up. Haven't you any Easter eggs to munch on ?

It's been cloudy here all day and the wind is now picking up.

No. Sainsbury by me had pallets full of them so hoping might get one cheap on Monday. :)

hifi_dave

I was thinking that. Lots of talking on the TV about Easter eggs and 'shrinkflation' where they cost more but a lot smaller. So, hopefully, we can pick up some bargains next week.

I was thinking that. Lots of talking on the TV about Easter eggs and 'shrinkflation' where they cost more but a lot smaller. So, hopefully, we can pick up some bargains next week.

One reason I avoid is if you give me my body weight in chocolate I'll eat it in a day and despite shrinkflation there' still a lot of chocolate in them especially the good ones where you get little flakes or Mars bars or whatever inside the egg.

And those mini-eggs are like crack cocaine to me. So I just try to resist temptation. Don't have diabetes, trying to avoid. Of course if they're selling 'em off half price...it has to be done.

Pigmy Pony
03-04-2026, 18:35
We'll be seeking out a couple of reduced price eggs Monday, that's what we do.

In the meantime we'll be on the hot cross buns. But we always toast them, which demands your full attention - they go from 0 - burnt in 3 seconds. Anita won't touch cremated buns, and I won't see them go into the bin, so it'll be buttered bun embers for me.

Day started off blue skies, but descended into rainy misery by afternoon. Back to blue skies now it's too late to be out doing anything.

Macca

Was raining a bit when I was cooking my tea an hour ago but it wasn't putting any real effort into it.

As is becoming a regular occurrence, sky has cleared completely now the sun's almost gone down.

Pigmy Pony

Boring, quiet and dull right now. No sign of storm - is one forecast for today? Maybe not round here.

Storm Dave is expected to bring heavy snow and gale-force winds across northern parts of the UK on Saturday but temperatures could reach the mid-20s next week.

Up to 30 centimetres of snow could fall, with the Met Office issuing a yellow severe weather warning in Scotland for heavy snow and blizzards causing some travel and power disruption.

An amber weather warning for wind has been issued for parts of northern England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday evening.

Macca
04-04-2026, 13:35
Too far south here to get the brunt of it.

It's really windy out here, if it wasn't for that it would be like a summer's day as very few clouds and 14C.

Pigmy Pony
04-04-2026, 15:21
Sky News weather forecast spoke of yellow weather warning for this storm later, illustrated on a map of Britain as a clearly defined yellow blob, the bottom edge of which was right where Stoke is.

It's turned out to be another lovely day today. Not sure what to expect for Monday - traditionally the weather is always lousy on Bank Holidays.

The Sky News Weather blob changed around tea time, to include an orange blob. And the bottom of the blob had moved north a bit, just catching Wigan I'd say.

We certainly did cop for some serious orange blob here - Just got home from me mate's half an hour ago to find an empty space where the garden waste bin should have been. I've gotten used to it blowing over in strong winds, but tonight it was in the road, seeking pastures and postcodes new. Never done that before.

I actually used the hedge trimmer, then the lawnmower as a mulcher! I was literally at it the majority of the day, gives a great sense of achievement when you get a horrible job like that done, though.

Just looked at a map, I didn't realise Toulouse was only a couple of hours' drive from my brother's place in Cap d'Agde. So no surprise you cop for some decent weather. Though when we visited Gorges du Tarn a couple of summers ago, temps hit 40C  That wasn't good.

Meanwhile here on the Chorley Riviera we're enjoying a balmy 12C and it's pissing down.

I have spent the morning in the garden, sorting out the fallen fir trees from the storms earlier in the year.
The ground was too wet to do anything until recently. It was also a perfect temperature for shifting the bigger logs into the woodside.

Not a regular in that one, must be 10 years or more since I was last in there. The one we go to in Hartlepool when we're up there for NEBO is consistently excellent.

We went in a Wetherspoons in Harrogate a couple of weeks ago... well actually we went in one end and went out the other end without stopping. It was very busy. Pretty smart though, converted from a building called the Royal Baths.

Must have throttled back whilst in a high angle of attack, causing it to stall and drop out of the sky.

Seen that on 'Air Crash Investigation.'

Probably the blood draining from its head while ascending, causing it to faint. Wood pigeons have very tiny heads relative to their bodies, so they don't have a lot of brain blood. That's a scientific fact.

Clay pigeons are worse - when they land on your head it really hurts.

Probably the blood draining from its head while ascending, causing it to faint. Wood pigeons have very tiny heads relative to their bodies, so they don't have a lot of brain blood. That's a scientific fact.

Clay pigeons are worse - when they land on your head it really hurts.

My son when in primary school got "told off" for not concentrating on his work but looking out of the window at a wood pigeon. He named it Barry!

Coincidentally, I have just booked a clay pigeon shooting taster session for him and me in two weeks time - I doubt's he'll be naming the clay pigeons, though.

Always fancied a go at that clay pigeon thing. Should be fun for him.

It's never too early to introduce your son to firearms, or indeed munitions in general :)

Me and Anita got invited to do that by a customer of mine who was a retired copper. It was a fun day out, the clays weren't just thrown up into the air, they rolled and bounced along the ground impersonating rabbits. If I'm honest, I might have preferred shooting at old cars with assault rifles in the Nevada desert, but it was a pretty decent second.

Same here, but without the 14C bit. We might just crack 12C, which will still be an improvement. Anita had a bit of an op on Tuesday, for carpal tunnel. She's been ordered not to drive for a few days, and I've been catching up on jobs, so I think a day out somewhere is in order.

Second that, hope Anita recovers well. Dad and sister have both had it with no drama so fingers crossed and have a nice day out.

Not been outdoors yet but clear blue sky and no wind, so hopefully a nice day on the cards. Sue and Tamz have gone to car boot leaving me to dog sit.

I’ve done clay pigeon shooting a couple of times but not for 25 years plus. I used to own and shoot “proper” firearms back in the 90’s but of course that’s not allowed these days in the UK so a shotgun is about the biggest boom you can do. William is always playing shooting games on his computer so thought it would be good to introduce him to the real deal and hopefully we will have a good day out, and maybe something to do again together if he likes it.

14 degrees here at the moment, with a high of 22 predicted.
Also a 35% chance of rain, which is not great, as I have not finished cutting the grass yet. I am only half way through the woodland.

Cheers guys, Anita is doing fine, just a bit of pain and restricted duties for a few days. In the meantime driving, cooking, washing up is for me to do. But hoovering, ironing and changing bedding can wait a bit longer. Besides I do it all wrong. I think these days it's termed weaponising incompetence :)

The hospital only deals with one hand at a time, so the patient can enjoy some degree of function. So at some point the whole thing will be repeated.

Wall to wall blue sky here, but the air is pretty chilly. Set to warm a bit over the coming days.

I visited a gun club a couple of times in the 80s, before handguns were banned. Using a .22 target pistol, I did ok. But then one of the members let me have a go with his "Dirty Harry" .44 magnum six shooter. I was worse than bad with that, never hit the target once. Bugger was practically jumping out of my hand  Good fun though.

You silly sausage.

Three and a half years now since my ladders slid out at the bottom with me riding them. Not as much fun as it sounds. Gashed my shin skin to the bone.

My advice would be similar to Martins: Get someone else to do it - son, brother-in-law, even sister-in-law in this age of equal opportunity :) I never go up ladders any more, oh no, just ask Anita ;)

Good advice, thanks chaps! Better though would not have been to let the bloody stuff get out of control in the first place... Still have to get all the marks off where it's been attached to the render, though I am wondering if I could just paint over it once any residue is scraped off.

Pigmy Pony
26-04-2026, 05:50
Ivy is horrible stuff, and apart from providing a habitat for all kinds of wildlife I really don't see the point of it. We had it covering most of the gable end of our bungalow until a few years ago, and it was a nightmare. The minute my back was turned it grew all round the satellite dish... every now and get we'd get signal problems with some channels, and it would be "damn, time to trim the ivy again".

As if that wasn't bad enough, one time I was trimming it I accidentally cut through the Sky cable. Getting it professionally fixed was costing more than I was prepared to pay, so much to Marco's horror I did the repair myself. Bloke in the shop said "Aye, cutting through those cables, happens more than you think".

So we got rid of all the ivy, and the marks left behind are still there. You might be luckier having rendered walls, scraping off the lumpy twiggy bits and painting should do the trick.

Barry
26-04-2026, 06:10
Yes, we had some ivy growing up the side of the back of the house. When it started to grow through the air vents above one of the windows, I said enough is enough! Despite it looking attractive, ivy can damage the brickwork.

But my days of going up ladders were long gone, so I got someone in to do the job for me. Trust you are recovering well from your fall: it's too late to say, but you should always have someone holding, and preferably putting their weight on the base of the ladder to provide stability.

Another lovely sunny day, a bit cooler than yesterday but fine in a T-shirt when you’re in it.

Not too bad after the skydiving yesterday, bit of a shiner where I hit the patio chair but mainly ok! The ladder didn’t actually move, it was my own stupid fault, I tugged a stubborn bit of the ivy harder and harder and when it eventually gave way that’s when I toppled off it backwards! Luckily I must have instinctively spun round as I landed virtually on my feet before then crashing into the chair, otherwise I may have been typing this from a hospital bed or not at all! You live and you learn. Or in my case, probably not!
