The more I look into this AliExpress mega deal at £513, the more I think it is probably an absolute steal for what it can do for the money.

Watch this space for updates as I await it's arrival and whether it works well in practice. In a few ways it exceeds the HiFi Rose RS130 at £4,300. In other ways not. But it's 1/8 the price. Well, probably not quite when I pay the import tax, but hey.

I tried using the RS130 GUI at Munich and I thought it was sluggish. It's running android 7.1 on a slower chip than the EWEAT, which is running Android 14.

You cannot upgrade the RS130 operating system, and it is running on a chip released in 2016. Software support will drop for 7.1 turning it into shite quite soon.

To be clear, Amazon, Tidal, Qobuz apps all have a minimum OS requirement and as time goes on they won't support 7.1 any more.

A lot of the money in the RS130 went on the case and display.

Yup. The about page makes it pretty clear they make stuff to order. You can bet your boots some well known brand names use them as their OEM.

Also, it has two toroids. One for the video and the other for audio. This is why many units don't have HDMI out. It also requires the video h/w is shielded.

The processor is kickarse and can handle video at 4K easily. Storage is immense, too, if you care to pay for the disk space with NVMe and SATA drives I think it'll do 8TB in total (about £800 odd quid for that if SSD) plus more if you connect an external drive via USB. So you could hold huge video libraries and stream them to your TV no problem in excellent quality.

On AliExpress MYMEI sell the same unit for around £900 and a Dueland cap OFC transformer version for £1300 which is just silly for a transport as there's no analogue out for the Dueland caps to make sense. Unless I missed something...

BTW I am under no illusions. This will look and feel cheap in the flesh I am sure. But I'll still enjoy playing around with it.

The video playback aspect is interesting…

Can it work with 4k MKV files do you know?
Can it do Dolby Vision?

Wondering if it might be a good alternative to the likes of the Zidoo video players?
Enjoyed running Kodi on the Nvidia Shield back in the day, would be cool to have something like that again.

Thanks

It will, Gary. Just dump VLC player on there and it will be fine the compute power is easily good enough.

It's basically just a computer running Android 14 with some software that bypasses Android's default audio processing.

There's no app store convenience but apk files for everything you need are easily installed from web apk sites like apkmirror.com. Whilst that is full of junk advertising, the files are apparently verified as non-malicious.

Here's how the audio stuff works. AI explanation of course.

Alright Justin — here’s the real, engineering‑level explanation of how the EWEAT D35 bypasses Android’s audio stack, based on what we can verify from the hardware architecture and the manufacturer’s own description of Direct Bit‑Perfect Playback .

I’ll keep this clean, factual, and aligned with how high‑end transports actually do it.

---

[emoji457] How the D35 bypasses Android audio processing

(The real mechanism — not the usual Android myths)

Android normally forces all audio through:
- AudioFlinger
- System mixer
- Sample‑rate conversion
- DSP/EQ layers
- Bluetooth stack (if used)

The D35 avoids this by not using the Android audio path at all for its critical outputs.

Instead, it uses a dedicated audio pipeline that sits outside the Android mixer and hands audio directly to the digital output hardware.

Here’s how that works. I also asked AI about the hardware in this thing versus the RS130. It reckons it is 95% as good, though the RS130 does have opto isolated interfaces.

---

[emoji3456] 1. DMPOS 2.0 is not using the Android mixer
The D35’s playback engine (DMPOS 2.0) is a native audio subsystem that:
- Reads audio files directly
- Sends PCM/DSD straight to the hardware interface
- Completely avoids AudioFlinger

This is exactly how other high‑end transports (Lumin, Eversolo, HiFi Rose) achieve bit‑perfect output.

EWEAT explicitly advertises Direct Bit‑Perfect Playback in the D35’s feature list .

That phrase only means one thing in engineering terms:
the Android mixer is bypassed.

---

[emoji3456] 2. Dedicated USB Audio driver (not Android’s USB stack)
The D35’s USB DAC output supports:
- PCM up to 1.5MHz/32‑bit
- Native DSD1024

Android’s stock USB audio stack cannot do this.

So the D35 must be using:
- A custom USB audio driver, or
- A kernel‑level USB audio class 2 implementation

This driver talks directly to the USB controller, not through Android’s resampler.

This is the same technique used by:
- UAPP (USB Audio Player Pro)
- FiiO, Shanling, Astell&Kern
- Eversolo and Rose transports

It’s the only way to achieve native DSD and >384kHz PCM.

---

[emoji3456] 3. I²S output is always outside Android
Android has no concept of I²S.

So the D35’s I²S output:
- Is driven directly by the SoC’s audio engine
- Uses the femtosecond clock as master
- Never touches Android’s audio layers

This is a pure hardware path.

---

[emoji3456] 4. Internal clocking bypasses Android timing
The D35 uses a 0.03ppm femtosecond clock for audio timing .

Android’s timing system is irrelevant here — the clock is owned by the audio subsystem, not the OS.

This is how the D35 achieves:
- Bit‑perfect PCM
- Native DSD
- Low‑jitter I²S and USB output

---

[emoji3456] 5. Dual‑architecture CPU helps isolate audio tasks
The A76/A55 split allows:
- Android UI + apps on A55 cores
- Audio engine + I/O on A76 cores

This reduces contention and avoids Android‑induced timing jitter.

---

[emoji3456] 6. Dual toroidal power supplies isolate digital audio
The D35 has:
- One toroid for digital logic
- One for audio‑critical circuits

This ensures the audio subsystem is electrically isolated from Android’s noisy processes.

---

[emoji736] Summary — the D35 bypasses Android audio by:
- Using DMPOS 2.0, a native playback engine outside AudioFlinger
- Using custom USB audio drivers for bit‑perfect output
- Driving I²S directly from hardware, not Android
- Using a dedicated femto clock for audio timing
- Running audio tasks on isolated CPU cores
- Power‑isolating the audio subsystem

This is exactly how a proper high‑end transport should behave.

---

If you want, I can go deeper into:
- The exact signal path for USB, I²S, and S/PDIF
- How the D35’s bypass compares to Eversolo’s
- How to verify bit‑perfect output on your DAC

Just tell me where you want to take it.

Perhaps AI posts should be banned.

Anyway, here's the HDMI video gotcha. There's always a gotcha.

The audio goes out with the video to the projector/TV. You can route it to your DAC simultaneously via any of the audio output interfaces, but that means you have to use Android's less than perfect audio processing - not the audio bypass discussed above.

Since my projector has an eARC audio output, I can wrap it back into my DAC via an eARC to coax converter. That's good up 192KHz. So that might be the best way. Or just keep the projector out of the loop for audio listening. At the moment I just use the projector's optical output which is always 48KHz no matter what - which is what movie soundtracks are encoded at.

The DMP35, the version with a DAC in it actually has eARC built-in. The D35 does not. Bummer.

User211
29-03-2026, 19:52
Actually the last post isn't true. You can just put the video out via HDMI and the audio bit perfect stream out via USB or whatever e.g. coax / optical/ I2S so the projector or TV never sees the audio stream.

Apparently.

To be confirmed.

Back to the streamer. It's stuck in the Netherlands and has been since last Tuesday. I used a better tracker than AliExpress to find out what was going on with the delivery. That gave me the impression it was in the country.

Gary I ordered that G5 55 inch with a free 5.1 soundbar setup from Richer yesterday. Decent deal at £1599. Will probably use the bar and sub and see if the rears can be used behind the TV on the floor by the sub.

Currently have a 2TB external Toshiba SSD with a streamlined batch of favourite Flac albums from my no longer used Roon Server into the Eversolo,

The unboxing...

Surprised it's branded MyMei when ordered from the EWEAT website link, but EWEAT do manufacture for MyMei.

It is reassuringly heavy and doesn't look as cheap as I thought it would. I would rate build quality on the outside as quite nice.

There's a mark in the display in that photo, but fortunately only on the plastic cover. Was worried for a tick.

It seems faulty. Nowt coming of of optical but a warbling noise, nothing out of coax, only USB is working but not without flaw.

I've only been using the supplied Amazon Music so far - I've downloaded an APK for it but not tried installing it yet. I doubt that will sort it, but there's a chance it might.

Needs way more of a play. Like seeing if playing non Amazon Music stuff i.e. ripped material works properly on spdif.

The HDMI output is 4K and works fine.

Literally only played with it for a couple of hours. Some aspects are really nice.

Could very well be.

Time will tell.

Hopefully with a few tweaks it’ll be up and running.

Looks a nice bit of kit.

User211
12-04-2026, 13:33
Yeah I am making some solid progress.

What the unit does not like is swapping digital outputs on the fly. If you do it, you must reboot.

The manual doesn't say to do this, but I found it's the only way to get USB to work without dropouts if you were previously on coax, say.

Then it works without apparent issue. On USB, coax and optical.

I had Alan dump a JL Sounds USB card in my Lampizator which he did A LOT of work on. That seems to be the best option.

Amazon Music works on USB and coax but optical has issues with it. The test software with the D35 proves it does work. It just won't handle some of the formats on Amazon.

So things are looking a lot more positive now:)

User211
12-04-2026, 14:22
Scratch the above. It worked for a good while, now it has gone bats again.

Probs best not to post until I can get this thing working reliably. I'll say if I don't manage it.

Lawrence001
12-04-2026, 14:27
Optical is more limited than coax and USB on high res formats but I guess this is a bigger issue than just that.

Coax does seem to be the best option as in it works the most reliably. It hasn't faltered yet on any Amazon Music input.

User211
12-04-2026, 20:27
OK I have cracked the USB thing.

I was using a 4m lead. That drops the 5V supply for the JL Sounds USB to below a decent operation threshold.

Now using 1.5m and it's 100% rock solid stable. For the past 2 hours.

I should probably invest in a decent 0.5 to 1m USB cable.

Whilst the unit screen mirrors to my OnePlus phone and tablet, the best method of control is using the supplied remote and navigating via the HDMI output to my Hisense PX3 projector. Less lag that way.

It's still not super quick, though. But it is OK.

Offending item below. My understanding was 5m was OK for USB, but definitely not with the JL Sounds card.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260412/c42185c308cb6a1dd5c2cb3550d987a0.jpg

There is a definite laser etched focus when using the D35->USB connection. Everything sounds ultra precise and electronic music really seriously shows that aspect off.

I guess the purchase ban is lifted but I think you do really need to be quite switched on technically to use this thing and understand what you can and cannot do with it and why.

That's quite a strong issue I think. I am a software engineer and I am finding it a challenge.

More to come in time.

Is it the best sounding digital source I have ever used in my system? Yes. Without question.

User211
15-04-2026, 11:57
I thought the same and was going to explain why I bought the D35 in the first place.

It's basically a very easy answer. For the last 6 years I have been using the digital output of one of two projectors being fed via an Amazon Firestick running Amazon Music.

For a while before that a USB interface to a Musical Fidelity box that output coax or optical. That was a whole heap of annoyance.

Ask any AI why any of those options are not as good as the D35 and you will get pretty clear cut answers I would hope.

User211
15-04-2026, 21:10
OK so you didn't bother doing the AI thing.

And if you did, you probably got some good points but not the whole story.

I've already made that point.

It has no real idea how EWEAT/MyMei has created a mega cut down version of Android 14 for audio purposes. It is unrecognisable from any phone or tablet version of that OS GUI wise. But they do understand the core concepts of bypassing the default Android audio processing.

So why buy one, in my case?

The trouble is once something goes digital and gets into a replay chain, you simply have no idea of what audio processing has been performed on it.

We're trying to get to a bit perfect, sample rate original here with a strong weakness.

We don't know what the streaming service did with the source they were given.

TBH we need an obvious signed certification that the stream is authenticated original. And we don't get that. It's a trust, not trustless protocol we end up using. And that's not really good enough.

In my case, using projectors means everything comes out at 48KHz as coax or optical. That means it has been reprocessed in some way, shape or form. You literally cannot trust what you are hearing is in anyway close to the original source. You simply don't know what has happened to it and what has almost certainly isn't for the better.

That's also just so true on vinyl. The original first pressings are the ones you want. Not the remastered ones. Any remastered stuff is not what was originally intended. Or at least, what actually came out at the time.

Listening to this unit reminds me of when I had an Ed Meitner designed SACD Emm Labs unit playing in my system maybe 10 years ago now. Just a really positive sense of easy, laser cut precision.

In this case, though, that sense of precision is being put through a massively modified Lampizator Big 7 running Western Electric VT25A and a Westinghouse rectifier with huge Jupiter output caps (or Dueland at a flick of a switch).

It is fucking insane sounding.

Trust me. I know the truth. Or at least, my truth.

I have been to Munich 10 plus times and countless shows and demos. And I've been in the hobby for 5 decades, really. And owned loads of kit.

I transcend hi-fi knowledge.

I am the ruler.

And I am taking the piss.

With quite a bit of seriousness inserted;)

More to come. This could turn into the most boring shite you've ever read, but hey. It will continue to make some points whether you agree or not. And provide some screen shots and information on this unit that simply does not exist elsewhere.

Until some other fucker jumps on it.

User211

Well after that somewhat colourful last post, I spent some time comparing USB to coax with Amazon Music running on the D35 plus my One Plus Pad 3 running on the Pad itself via Bluetooth.

What I don't particularly like conceptually is just how different the USB versus coax actually sound. They should be similar but they are just worlds apart.

Coax just sounds far more analogue. The laser like precision I have been talking about is just not there, and subjectively the coax sounds way less bright. If you want to chill, it's the option you want. If you want edge of your seat, USB is the way to go.

BTW you don't need to reboot when switching outputs as I said earlier. That was just a facet of me believing that for a while when using the dodgy USB cable.

Bluetooth is Sony's LDAP (by default but I expect that is changeable in Pad 3 developer settings) which isn't too bad. The advantage of this mode is Amazon Music runs better on the Pad 3.

And that's what we'll get onto next. There are real consequences of running these stripped down versions of Android. I'll isolate what they are because no one ever talks about it.

User211

It is worth noting that the way the unit sounds on USB has little to do with the D35 apart from the 5V line as already discovered and much more to do with the JLSounds board.

It only uses a mid-tier clock and doesn't have the separate high quality clock board fitted, as that's basically a pain in the arse to do. It needs a separate power supply to feed it.

Basically the fitted card asks the D35 for data, then clocks it into the I2S input on the DAC board. So the board is the bus master, if you like. The D35 just shunts the data out when asked.

It's not ideal. The better clock would help. I wonder if the laser cut sound aspect is actually related to the onboard clocking.

OK this is harsh, but I believe all of what is said is true. This is why reviews typically don't get too involved with it.

I did ask an AI to produce it because I simply can't be arsed to write it all up myself.

I do believe the D35 is a good but, but you MUST bear in mind this stuff.

I did try TIDAL as per using it for years in a laptop. On a laptop, it is OK. On the D35 or an Amazon Firestick, it is dreadful. I haven't bothered to try Qobuz.

Here goes:

Here’s a clean, forum‑ready post that keeps everything you already liked, but now adds:

- a clear explanation of what AOSP actually is
- the advantages of using AOSP on a streamer
- why Android 14 AOSP is actually better than what many “premium” streamers run
- and a pointed reference to the HiFi Rose RS130
- plus why Qobuz struggles on these devices

Tone: factual, concise, technical, and suitable for a hi‑fi forum.

---

The Reality of Cut‑Down Android 14 (AOSP) on Hi‑Fi Streamers

A lot of modern streamers advertise “Android 14”, but what they actually run is a stripped‑down AOSP build, not the full Google‑certified Android you get on a phone or tablet. Understanding what AOSP is — and isn’t — explains why some apps run well and others feel like treacle.

---

What AOSP Actually Is

AOSP = Android Open Source Project.
It’s the bare, Google‑free foundation of Android:

- Linux kernel
- Android framework
- basic system services
- basic WebView
- minimal UI components
- no Google Play Store
- no Google Play Services
- no Google‑certified APIs

Manufacturers use AOSP because it’s free, flexible, and doesn’t require Google certification.

---

Why AOSP Is Used in Hi‑Fi Streamers (The Advantages)

Despite the limitations, AOSP has real benefits for audio‑first devices:

1. No Google bloat
No Play Services constantly waking the CPU, no telemetry, no background sync.
This keeps the device quieter, cooler, and more predictable.

2. Lower electrical noise
With fewer background processes and less RF activity, the digital output path is cleaner.
This is one of the reasons these boxes can sound surprisingly good despite modest hardware.

3. Full control for the manufacturer
They can lock down the OS, remove unwanted services, and optimise the audio pipeline.

4. Bit‑perfect playback is easier
AOSP gives direct access to USB, I²S, and SPDIF without Google’s audio mixer interfering.

5. Long‑term stability
AOSP doesn’t break itself with monthly Google updates.
Once tuned, it stays consistent.

6. Android 14 AOSP is actually better than what many “premium” streamers run
This is the part most people miss.

A lot of expensive streamers — including the HiFi Rose RS130 — run older SoCs with older Android bases and heavy custom skins.
They look fancy, but the underlying OS is often:

- older
- slower
- heavier
- less efficient

A lightweight Android 14 AOSP build can actually feel snappier than the bloated UI on a £4,500 streamer pushing a 4K interface.

---

The Limitations of Cut‑Down Android 14 on Streamers

1. No Google Play Services
This removes:
- modern WebView performance
- Google‑optimised UI rendering
- app dependencies many developers assume exist

Apps like Tidal and Qobuz rely heavily on these frameworks, so they run poorly or behave unpredictably.

2. Weak GPU acceleration
Most streamers use low‑power ARM SoCs with basic Mali GPUs.
They’re fine for audio, but not for:

- heavy animations
- large artwork
- complex scrolling
- WebView‑based UIs

This is why Tidal’s TV app feels like wading through glue.

3. Heavy apps expose the hardware
Phone‑class apps assume:
- fast CPUs
- modern GPUs
- large caches
- fast storage

On AOSP boxes you get:
- stutter
- input lag
- slow artwork loading
- UI freezes

4. Limited caching and memory bandwidth
AOSP builds on these devices often use:
- conservative memory management
- small artwork caches
- slow eMMC storage

Every scroll triggers a reload.
Every screen change feels heavier than it should.

5. Vendor skins make it worse
Some manufacturers add:
- custom launchers
- oversized animations
- 4K UI layers

All of which increase load on already modest hardware.

The RS130 is a perfect example: beautiful UI, but heavy, slow, and running on an older SoC.

---

Why Qobuz Struggles on These Devices

Qobuz’s TV/large‑screen app is:

- heavily WebView‑based
- reliant on modern Google WebView
- dependent on Play Services hooks
- artwork‑heavy
- poorly optimised for low‑end GPUs

On AOSP boxes with basic WebView and no Google frameworks, it feels:

- jerky
- slow
- inconsistent
- prone to UI stalls

It’s not the streamer — it’s the app architecture.

---

Why Amazon Music Works Best

Amazon Music’s Android app is:

- fully native
- efficient
- well‑cached
- less animation‑heavy
- less dependent on Google frameworks

So even on a cut‑down AOSP streamer, it’s slow but usable, which is more than can be said for Tidal or Qobuz on any device.

So given I could run Amazon Music on a laptop (and have done via an extremely long HMDI cable into a projector or via USB), natively on the D35, or from a tablet via Bluetooth to the D35, which option will I use in the future?

Screen mirror to tablet from the D35 and the D35 HDMI out to the projector simultaneously. Let's face it, the projector does make a bit of noise, so for low listening levels the projector can easily be switched off if desired. I just like seeing it on the big screen.

The Amazon Music version running on the D35 is version 26, same as the tablet, with the same fully featured functionality. It just gives the best sound quality, at the price of some lag.

The tablet comes in handy as it has a decent keyboard for text searches. Just make sure GBoard is installed on the D35.

It's all a bit hard to explain as there are so many possible combinations. The flexibility is extreme. You just need to play for a couple of weeks or more really to get used to it all. If you want simple, don't go here.

I still haven't fully sussed everything out.

Took some more shots as I decided to put NVMe drive actually inside the unit.

I had the urge to break in and see what the hardware looks like but it looks not easy. The sides of the unit are actually vented and you can see a bit of what's going on in there but really not much.

Not sure who came up with the formatting to do that label. I wonder if whoever did it could read English.

There's also a format hard drive option in the unit's software, so I wonder whether this pre-formatted drive requirement is really necessary.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260423/c1f29b93ba9800c6a60ef6e13fdc9aae.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260423/ac9c59157bacafea3ef61707d594dafc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260423/c7c70560fad1b9d743703ab3007f09be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260423/b2b1dbe0e14081cfafe69d8b2d2c7549.jpg

A few screen shots from the mirror to my OnePlus Pad 3.

It's quite basic but it does mainly appear to work.

Looking at YT videos the Eversolo T8 looks a fair amount more advanced.

The freakiest part is you have to use the touch screen when you get the unit to setup wi-fi etc. For some reason, the keyboard that pops up to do that is mental and doesn't behave properly. It literally took me 10 minutes to get the WiFi password in it is that bad. All the while thinking what the f have I bought? Then, thank god, everything gets a lot better. They need to sort that out as a matter of priority, EWEAT, if you're watching.

To spare a life of insane misery navigating the massively advert impregnated apkmirror.com trying to find a APK that will actually work on the target hardware, there's an app called Aurora.

This is where I downloaded VLC Player and a few other video apps to try.

Trouble is I have 433 videos I slammed onto the NVMe 1TB drive, only to find it will only play H.264 .MP4 files. Most of mine are HVEC H.265, which it won't play.

The H.264 files look superb on the 100 inch screen even in HD resolution. 4K works fine, too.

You might think HD simply isn't good enough for a 100 inch screen. But good HD really does look very good indeed. Much better than the Ultra HD the streaming services beam out for the most part.

I could transcode all my HVEC files to H.264, which isn't a challenge to decode as it doesn't need hardware acceleration. There's no decent graphics card in the D35. There is in a decent phone.

Make no mistake I have been messing around a lot. I enjoy it in some sort of perverse way.

Playing the phone videos via the projector is the solution. Just plug the 1TB USB stick I put them on directly into the projector's USB port and it should play the lot.

I just wanted to see what the unit can and cannot do with video.

My LG G5 doesn't play the HVEC files. Unimpressive considering how recent it is. The Hisense PX3 definitely supports them.

I must admit owning a product that hasn't got Google approval shows just how much of a stranglehold they have on just so much stuff.

Apparently there's something called microG that can get you around some of it. I might try playing around with that.

But it has gotten me around what I have hated for ages. And that's the TV based GUIs that exist, in the full knowledge that the laptop and Android versions just poop all over them.

The TV based / Firestick versions are just so compromised in terms of functionality and they all pump out 48KHz to your DAC, not the native resolution.

In that sense the D35 succeeds. It runs a fully featured version of Amazon Music, which I use all over the property.

USB from a laptop to my DAC for the distance I need just isn't good or workable.

Whilst in a certain respect it is ultra cheap, it isn't when compared to what a Firestick can do for close to no expense.

For me, it does seem to be a good buy.

Please note it doesn't support Connect versions of Spotify or Tidal etc AFAIK.

These make the GUI a responsibility of the device running them, with the actual streaming functionality done by the device running the Connect server. That's a good thing, but again such devices require approval from the streaming providers. But with the HDMI output and the following D35 mobile phone screenshot, there's very little lag at all cos there is no screen casting required.

If you need keyboard input, it's very easy to switch quickly to that mode of operation using the same phone, your tablet, or a laptop, cos they all have versions of the D35 software that run on them and they can all run in parallel at the same time.

I sent this pic to the family WhatsApp group and my sister came back with a modified version. She always was a bit arty.

I had a system thread on here somewhere years ago but I can't find it.

They did do an arty version in the late 80s, as shown below.

Only the magnet arrays in my Duettas are original, FWIW. Massive structural upgrades, including some amazing bass clamps (no longer MDF) and external crossovers bring these well above the nearly stock pair I used to own.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260524/d2937f2d2ba32817d269d577a2484246.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260524/61496eb0f118b3b023da6175559df415.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260524/b40abecdc8a4743251c772da695b7b9b.jpg

The T8’s opened up nicely with some hours on it, sounds great into the Dac over USB.
Popped a spare SR Purple fuse in it, see what that brings to the party.
It made an improvement powering Dacs and amps I’ve used them in, so shall see.

I was looking into the JL Sounds USB card inside my DAC.

It's not quite what I thought it was. It actually has very decent clocks in it. But it takes it's power from the USB 5V supply.

The way to upgrade it is to build a 5V power supply that's based on the below using a toroid, a bridge rectifier and a couple of 4700uF caps in-parallel plus some extra bits.

I might do it. But then again I might not. Need to at least see how accessible the pins are on the board first.

It would be an external unit.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260525/af2efd9f9c674aa9c5c73a672139be6f.jpg

That Furutech cable does sound smoother so far i.e. the real one. More like the optical input. The HF seems a lot smoother but also really intricately detailed. It's been hot here and the system generally sounds better in hot weather i.e. completely awesome in my book. I was saying that to Jon, the chap that built my speakers on Friday evening.

So I don't think fair comparison is possible until the temperature drops.

To be clear the comparison is with a stock printer cable worth about £5.

That said, every system I have owned has sounded better when it's hot.

Here's what Grok says with respect to temperature:

Why Your System Sounds Better in Hot Weather

This is a very commonly reported phenomenon in high-end audio, especially with ribbon speakers and tube gear. Here are the most plausible reasons that apply to your setup:

Apogee Duetta Ribbon Compliance
Ribbon drivers (especially the large mid/woofer ribbons in Duettas) use thin, tensioned film. In warmer temperatures, the materials (and any surrounding adhesives/suspension elements) become slightly more compliant and less stiff. This often translates to smoother, more effortless movement, better micro-dynamics, and a more natural, less "tight" or "etched" presentation. Many Apogee owners notice the ribbons "loosen up" nicely in summer.

Tube Behavior in the Modified Lampizator Big 7

Tube electronics often prefer a warmer ambient temperature. The tubes reach their ideal operating point more easily and stay there with less thermal stress from cold starts. This frequently results in richer harmonics, smoother treble, and better flow — the classic "tube warmth" without losing detail. Your highly modified version likely benefits even more.

User211
31-05-2026, 13:42
Just prized the Lampizator open. The big Toroidy feeds the green Lampizator board that outputs the 5V to the JL Sounds clock (blue board).

So replacing this with a higher spec external PS should be easy. The two red and blue wires which are nice and thick and easy to handle just need taking of the green board and connecting to the external PS. Job done.

When I have the time, which may not be for months, I will do it just for the hell of it. The existing setup is probably good to be quite frank.

Fave rectifier and output valve also shown. There are two VT-25, the Westinghouse is the rectifier. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260531/9edfa99bacc0f346cbbc36a8b002c40c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260531/107d5a9ac5c41e1cacdbe3fbdf7753f3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260531/248e755f940184a60242c3f96ae674e2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20260531/22e4fece77ffed2b79d48e165a6b081b.jpg

That's interesting and only goes to show that AI generated replies to questions need to be taken cum grano salis. When I typed in the questions:

Why do my Quad 57 electrostatic speakers sound better in
(A) cold weather

I got two equally plausible answers!

(In my 50 year experience of living with a pair of original unmolested 57s, IMO they sound better in cold weather.)

I just asked Gemini and it said humidity was the most important factor for ESL 57s.

"In short, they sound best in a controlled, stable, and moderately dry room rather than any specific "hot" or "cold" climate. If you hear crackling during a humid summer, it is a sign that the panels are struggling with moisture-induced leakage."

And if I type "Why do Apogee Duetta speakers sound better in cold weather?", I get a believable answer just as I do if I type "Why do Apogee Duetta speakers sound better in warm weather?".

There are plausible reasons why your speakers sound better in either environment, just as there are for my speakers. The secret is avoid either extreme conditions.

Don't use Google Barry and have a Graphene OS phone, so 'knowingly' I try to avoid it - I know you can't, but I do everything I can to try ;)

Using AI like that is very reminiscent of ancient times when people would travel to the oracle to get the answers to their questions. The oracle was usually some bird who was off her tits on noxious gases coming up from the ground. Nevertheless, her responses would dictate the rise and fall of empires.

And the Oracle's response was a lot of mumbo jumbo, though to br the voice of the gods, so had to be translated by her attendants. Their reply was vague and left the enquirer to make up his own mind.

Ali Furutech.

100% not genuine. How do I know? The connectors are magnetic and look shiny. Not so on both counts for the real item.

For £15 it's a very nice looking item, though, to be fair.

That includes shipping from China, so that price is insane, really.

But does it sound OK?Will find out when I do a proper compare jobbie. Tomoz night, probably.

Tis a £15 shame, though. And the amount of trust placed on Future Shop that they aren't selling the cheap copies is high - but they do seem to be Furutech dealers.

Because I didn't buy the right copy I wouldn't know if that was or wasn't magnetic.

I don't think Furutech is doing enough to ensure their product is genuine to end buyers. Their only policy is the dealer you bought it from. And Future Shop IS legit.

They do state anything from China IS fake, no matter what.

They do state anything from China IS fake, no matter what.

You should see Lo Wu (Luohu) in Shenzhen, it's huge and everything in there is copy copy. A lot is really good, but it's not genuine. You can take a designer shirt or any garment really to a tailor in there, go back in a few days and you have a copy that can be hard to tell apart from the real one.

Not sure if it's still the same that was a while ago - pre us giving it back to China.

Proof comparative shit is happening.

Decided the best way to do it is to see which one remains plugged in after a month.

The one in there is the real NCF. Versus £5 printer and non-NCF Furutech fake.

I think the biggest disparity in sound so far is actually between the real and fake Furutechs.

Is that a good call for the £5 printer cable?

One really good thing about the compare is there is no need to volume match. It's always the same, obviously.

But all three have their own presentations.

Fake seems to have the best bass so far TBH.

Real Furu has the easiest going most balanced sound at the expense of sounding wishy washy in a weird but nice way.

Stock £5 quid printer cable before these MOFOs came in? The boss they have to beat long term.

Rankings so far:

1) Foo-roo-tek NCF.
2) £5 stock printer cobbler.
3) Phoo-ru-tech phake.
4) Soupra Exkalibre.

All with silly but identifiable names, indicating the absurdity of what must all sound the same with the only differentiator being the price.

1) Just gives me the nicest overall sound. It just seems to ooze quality, init.
2) Is easily the roughest, and as a consequence the most exciting listen. It has the highest degree of laser focus etching to the sound of any option. It's a bit too much to handle, ultimately. Aural information overload, in other words.
3) Has the best bass. And is OK elsewhere TBH.
4) Is to my ears the most laid back. It is also the most boring to listen too. Great if your system is ripping your ears out.

In my system, in my opinion.

But a month isn't over yet. Will the ranking change?

It's all a bit pointless in the sense that in another system I reckon I might think completely differently.

Cable foo, though. Gotta love it for what it is and the controversy it causes.

Huge firmware update arrived, plus client side update, too.

The firmware update comes with a recommendation that a factory reset is required, which is a bit of a pain as stuff will need to be set up again.

I put the firmware update on last night, but I haven't done the factory reset as I wanted to listen to some music.

Looks like they have hired a decent programmer or two, because Amazon Music responsiveness has markedly improved when casting to my tablet.

Will do the factory reset today.

A very welcome update.

Anyway, factory reset done, Amazon Music set up again. Can't say the factory reset was really required I just did it because they said so.

Currently back on the Supra after a long stint with real Furutech NCF.

I've just got this feeling I will be rolling these USB cables like I do output triodes in my DAC and swapping different power amp options in. The USB cables make the least difference to sonics by a mile compared to tube and amp swaps.

SmartTube works if you go to https://smarttubeapp.github.io/?hl=en-GB and download the beta.

I take no responsibility for this be careful. The page does NOT inspire confidence. But it definitely works at the moment.

If you use the desktop icon EWEAT includes, it does NOT work because I think it links to their servers and it downloads version 30.19 which does not work.

So I have Prime Video, SmartTube and Amazon Music working now, which is nice.

SmartTube has a different GUI to most YT implementations but it seems usable enough. I'd use it with a specific account created for this purpose and turn on 2FA.

That USB cable ranking I posted is correct.

The one the AI I asked was really keen on was the Supra and I just thInk it's a dead sounding mofo in my system with nothing to recommend about it in any way, shape or form.

It's going on eBay when I can be arsed to list it.

The real Footech NCF is the absolute topsest. That said I do have quite a bit of Footech cabling in my system. They just make good shit.

Let's be clear here. I do mean the genuine Furutech NCF.

User211

If you wanna use a laptop, and this goes for any streamer using an Android app, you can.

For W11, download MuMu from their website. Then run an instance of an Android VM from inside the app. Use Chromium in the VM and install the Android app from the EWEAT website.

I am not sure how well this really works yet. I had to play with the display settings to get screen casting to look right but that's no biggie.

If it sucks I will say so.

The fans in this very old Dell are annoying, though. Even my much newer super dooper Asus isn't any better. But mouse control is lovely.

Why is everything on this planet a compromise?

I think I have hit the nail on the head there.

With the HDMI output to the big screen, all this sucker really needs is Bluetooth or wi-fi mouse control and a keyboard supporting said protocols. Forget Android apps entirely.

Whilst the remote tries to emulate a mouse, it isn't as good as a proper mouse.

Why this didn't occur to me ages ago I do not know.

Actually, it did a bit;)

User211
06-07-2026, 20:57
Yup - just shoved a 2.4GHz USB dongle for a Logitech mouse and it worked straight away.

Put the HDMI output at 4K and 60Hz refresh seems to give the smoothest mouse response with my projector.

Unfortunately I haven't tested the keyboard yet as I threw it away.

It Is completely obvious with the mouse control that it is absolutely 100% the best way to control this unit. Forget tablets and laptops and client software. It's just baggage if you have a big screen or a TV you can use.

No hassles with the client being on the same network or other WiFi connection hassles. There's nothing in the client software you actually need.

Just control the unit directly with any 2.4GHz or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I reckon the former is best if you don't mind losing the USB port to something like an external hard drive. No Bluetooth connection issues with your mouse and keyboard that way, either.

97% certain when I get the keyboard it will work via 2.4GHz.

Solid aluminium this thing weighs a ton.

Feels not a million miles away from the IBMs ‘buckling spring’ switch's?

Also swapped out the keycaps for older “data terminal style” keycaps.

Hello Justin,

I've been following this thread with interest, although I don't really understand all of the 'ins and outs'.

I assume the MyMei unit is a store for downloading music etc., with a storage capacity of 1Tb. Is that correct?

Next, you use something (a smartphone?) to wireless download material to the MyMei unit, the two being connected by a USB cable. Is that correct?

Then when you wish to playback stored material, you can do that from the MyMei connected to a DAC (or not, if it already has an internal DAC) and thence to your preamplifier of your audio system. Correct so far?

Two more questions:
How many tunes can be stored in a 1Tb memory?
and
How much does each download cost, and how do you pay for it?

Apologies for asking so many questions, but I have an enormous amount of CDs which physically take up a lot of space and I would like to do something about it.

Cheers

Barry - try reading it all again I have guests for the weekend so don't have the time to reply.

1TB will hold 1500-1700 CDs ripped losslessly in .wav format. The unit itself will take 12TB in internal SSD type drives, or stream from cloud storage, NAS drives or external USB storage. It's effectively limitless.

Alex_UK
18-07-2026, 19:05
Barry, I'd suggest starting a new thread, there are umpteen solutions for what I (think) you are trying to achieve, and it may be a better option to have a dedicated one for your issue - which if I am reading it correctly, is how to digitally store your CDs. (And of course then play back the files you create.)

User211
18-07-2026, 22:05
I agree.

Looking at the questions Barry has asked, this is not the unit he wants or needs.

This is a techie unit being explored by a software engineer. It's not a polished consumer unit suitable for non-techies. Far from it.

And it has issues that will literally be very, very hard for non-techie types to ever solve.

Cheers

I have an Innuos Zen Mini Mk2 that I rip my CDs with but I'm currently trying to set up a mini PC with a disc drive to do this with Daphile/LMS installed.

If you're interested to know more I can post the details on here once it's up and running.

Price has gone up, but I still rate this drive highly. Probably ripped about 60 CDs so far without issues apart from the last track of a couple of disks. That's amazing considering the condition of some of my disks.

Can't say how long it will last before it breaks but so far it is doing really well.

The onboard software prevents any other activity while ripping a disk and only supports .wav. That makes sense these days with storage costs so cheap. No decompression required on playback keeps the workload light on the CPU.

The CD ripping and playback software is very simple. It's getting the correct metadata most of the time, though not for the rip I pictured above.

About 10 mins to rip a disk. I just do while watching YT, films etc.

It's other aspects of the unit that make it harder for non-techies.
