Wharfedale 12.1 loudspeakers, placementwhen a bedroom system.

It's been a very long time since I've been here and in fact I haven't (other than headphones) had a proper sound system for several years.
Recently I've really started to miss it and want to set up a basic but quality bedroom system to listen and just to chill out and also for when I'm editing photos, which I do quite a lot of.
The Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 will suit my 17 sq/m room, and my listening tastes very well but there is one placement hiccup. They must go on a 3.6 metre wall which has the bed in a central position and I will be flat out getting them 30cm from the sidewall. Distance from the rear wall isn't a problem.
Nearly everything I've read is that they need heaps of free air to sidewalls and every online YouTube review has them virtually in free space.
How badly will close proximity to side walls affect the sound and how effectively do you think I could remedy it with sound deadening pads or doing a room eq adjustment?
Hoping I can use the Diamonds,,the more relaxed nature of them is exactly what I'm after.

As they are ported speakers the only real way to achieve better sound near boundaries is to stuff the ports.

This will limit the bass from the ports and should result in an acceptable sound. At first instance you could try using some socks, then look around for high density foam or similar.

30cm from a side wall isn't ideal obviously but I don't think it will be a serious problem.

Since they have a dip in their response across the mids I'd try them without any room treatment first you might find it will make them too dull. With passive treatment all you can do is experiment since all situations are different.

I think they're a good choice of speaker for how you need to set them up. Putting them out in free space will give better imaging but they'll be bass shy and les 'warm' that way since they don't have any low bass. I wouldn't use them like that without subwoofers myself.

Thanks for the advice, I've had a hard look at how I can set them up and it might be possible to get to 50cm from the side walls which is getting closer to the recommended minimum at least. Quite possibly I'll be able to pack the rear of the cabinet (it's an open cabinet with shelves)with some form of absorption as well so I might be able to get them singing nicely, time will tell.

I haven’t heard the 12.1s, but I have a pair of 220s in my dining room setup and there is no choice but for the right hand one to be close the the walls in the corner. The advantage of the 220s and why they work well in this situation is that they are bottom ported. They are also very, very good speakers for the money. (Richers have them at £199 (12.1 are £179 there) but only in black.) Might be worth comparing?
