View Full Version : Half width DAC ideas/FS?
I have been running a Border Patrol SE DAC for some years but fancy a change. Any ideas? Anyone selling a DAC? Must be half width and ideally black.
Lawrence002 on Maverick classifieds has an Oppo Sonica dac for sale. I think they are around 1/2 width and are a cracking dac with streaming built in. He's also a nice chap to deal with.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Vince, will take a look.

Great shout, does the sound match the specs?
I have a T+A DAC 8 DSD (around a grand) - utterly superb sound, some great filters and can act as a preamp as well. Some Simaudio Moons come in a half width and are well worth a listen.
EDIT - sorry, I should be clear, the T+A isn’t going anywhere! They do crop up from time to time.
Rega Dacs always a good shout, particularly if you prefer a "non digital" type of sound.
You could speak to rabski on maverick hifi.
He builds and sells valve dacs with full valve psu for around 1000.
They are usually in smaller than standard box size, but with the longer side being to the front.
No doubt he could build so that the shorter/end side is to the front, and therefore half width.

If you want an 'oldy but a goody' and some genuine musicality the Thorens TDA 2000 is worth hunting out. The problem is that people don't seem to get rid of them so they're not hugely common on the second-hand market. I have one, which was in regular use in a second system until very recently. Reliable and the excellent reviews it received when new were well-deserved, in my opinion.

There's a second hand one for sale there at the moment. Or as of yesterday anyway.
It's the one i bought new.
It could be turned sideways.

Current flavour of the YT reviewers is the FiiO K13 R2R DAC, including a headphone amp.

This is on my active radar to use with my laptop and the odds of purchase are more than 50/50. A linear power supply and closed-back headphones are also being looked into.

If you want to go cheaper but not lose the sound quality try a Wiim Ultra for £350. I've owned much more expensive DAC/streamers but this one is just as good. Buy from Amazon then you can always send it back if you don't like it :)
