Wish You Were Here 50

Wish You Were Here 50 has just been released and I have been working my way through the very extended selection of tracks made available on this immersive box set.

This was the first LP I ever bought as a youngster when I had saved up my pocket money and so has particular significance for me.

All I can say is WOW! This really is an absolute treat for Floyd fans.

Available on Qobuz so I presume most streaming sites and in 24/192!

I'm a bit ambivalent about Pink Floyd since I find much of their material is alright up to a point but it rarely excels. They sit at a respectable seven out of ten in my book.

However I rate WYWH as their best album because it breaks through to another level thanks to the title track in all of its parts; rarely do their other albums climax so high and for so long, to my ears.

It was among the first dozen or so albums that I bought. I think I got into it from hearing Shine On...on the Radio 1 Friday Rock Show's listener all time top ten in the late '70s. I bought it on a family trip down to London, mine was a Spanish pressing for some reason. One of my favourite memories is hearing it on a family friend's B&O system when I was staying with them. The opening section still transports me somewhere else in a way that few other pieces of music can.

Yes, this re-release looks worthwhile and more substantial than other deluxe/anniversary products,

The demo / alternative versions of Wish You Were Here tracks are definitely worth a listen.

I see it’s in Tidal, giving it a try there. I would say it is probably my favourite Floyd album - not sure I am going to make all 4 hours, 18 minutes and 49 seconds of it in one sitting though!

I never understood the affection 'Wish You Were Here' attracts. It is one of my least favourite Floyd LPs and I rarely play it.

This 50 anniversary edition looks to me to be EMI milking their back catalogue, just as they did with the umpteen versions of 'Dark Side of the Moon' issued. But as I'm unlikely to hear this new edition I shouldn't judge it.
