Rain in the night but clear skies this morning and chilly - 6C.
Supposed to be dry and sunny today though.

A wet and windy 13c this morning.
Rained all night, seems to have stopped now but it was chilly first thing.
Forecast is rain for the next three days.
Seems to be drying up here now, with sunny spells forecast this afternoon. Still very mild, 15c. Rain off and on all week predicted.

Not so cold but windy, wet, dark and dismal.
Watching the TV weather this morning they predicted that clouds would clear later but that was 1700 onwards when the Sun has gone down..:scratch:
Not been too bad today, no wind and it's quite mild for time of year. Even had a couple of brief spells of sunshine.
Bit of rain earlier, but not too bad overall. Wife and daughter both complaining they were freezing and wanting me to light the wood burner or put the heating on... It's still 13c out there, and 20c inside - that's not freezing, and I'm a tight wad! I do think women feel the cold more than men, not sure if that's a biological thing, or perhaps evolutionary from when the males were out hunting and gathering and the females sat around the camp fire or in the huts. :confused:

20C inside with no heating on is pretty good. I can't get to that with the heating on. 17.7C in here right now with a 500 watt radiator on.

Normally women do feel the cold more than men. But when I visit my oldest friend his missus is complaining that it's too warm in the house while he sits there in his fleece and refusing to turn the heating down. That's just weird as his tightness round here is legendary :scratch:
Just been for a check round the rooms where I have thermometers - 18.7C in the study where I am now, 17.9C in the (much larger) living room and 19.1C in the kitchen - the oven was on earlier, but off since 6pm. The house is 20 years old, and I am guessing must have been well insulated, plus it's proper solid construction, not plasterboard walls or "dab and daub". Even in winter we hardly have the heating on downstairs but I do like to get the wood burner going when it's chilly - keeps the house pretty warm.

About the same age as my pal Big Al's house. He heats the whole place from his 65'' plasma telly. The windows are the size of postage stamps but that's the price you pay I suppose.

Started off wet but by 10 am became t shirt weather.
Put the lights on and shut the curtains at 1630 as it was almost dark outside.
7 more weeks and the days start getting longer but it's going to get worse before it gets better.

BBC predicted a fine clear day. Reality was dark grey clouds and drizzle off and on, around 14c. Now it's too late to enjoy, the clouds have cleared a bit to reveal a strange bright light in the sky.
1100 and it's yet to get properly light here.
Probably not going to manage it from the look of things.

it only got about 3 hours of daylight so maybe that was not enough. I don't think it has a switch.
Is it for internal use only? If so put it on a widow sill for it to charge up. Otherwise put it outside.
Apparently you can charge them up with light from an incandescent light bulb, but it will take several hours. Use sunlight - it's free.
It's a light for a shed. I think you're supposed to put the solar panel outside but I did put it on the window sill.
Supposed to be sunny tomorrow so we'll see. Might move it into the front as that gets the sun in the morning.

It has PIR on it (passive infra red), so is set off when a visitor (or passing cat) sets it off, and it stays on for about 20 seconds. Duration is adjustable. Works great in the summer months, but in winter not so much. Right now waving my hand in front of it, it's just a dim glow. And as winter progresses it will get even worse.
I'd say that unless you get a substantial solar panel with it, and a good size battery, you're not going to get enough from it. Work out cheaper for you to have led bulbs in the kitchen, if you haven't already.

There's a fluorescent light in the kitchen, that stopped working about 25 years ago. So I put a desk lamp in there which has worked up until the other day. Thought bulb had gone but changed it and still no worky. Might be a dodgy switch I think.
It's still fine if the neighbours have their back room light on as that's so bright it looks like there's an alien abduction taking place - it lights up my kitchen like day. But they don't seem to be using that room so much anymore.
Spied the solar light whilst out checking my traps earlier and thought it might be the solution. It was only a fiver.

Iirc, fluorescent lights have 2 parts to them - the tube, and something that fits into one end, called a 'starter'. Might be all that needs replacing, worth looking into.

Or just get rid and buy a regular light fitting that you can put one or more LED bulbs into.
I don't like the fluorescent light which is why I never bothered getting it fixed when it died. It's the starter that's gone on it.
I will just have to see if I can fix the broken lamp and if not, then it's going to have to be new lamps for old.

Would be quite straightforward to change the strip light for a regular light fitting. But if you're not comfortable with electricity you could get an electrician to do it for maybe £70. Or I'll sort it for a cup of Yorkshire tea and some decent biscuits :)

Rain this morning, we've had it dry for a couple of days, too much to expect a dry weekend too.
Well the sunshine never materialised in fact it's got darker here.
On the plus side the solar light in the kitchen is working! It does have an on/off switch. If switched on then it's supposed to come on at dusk and go off at dawn automatically. But so dull here it thinks it's dusk already.
Just had a very pleasant 4 mile walk with the dog - a few sunny spells, hardly any wind and still very mild at 14c. Tomorrow looks promising, too, and temperatures set to stay this way for the next 10 days.
Yes it's good that the temperatures are staying mild. Last November was freezing from the off, I think we had snow here towards the end of it.
Chilly today and quite dull. Rain later and probably for the rest of the week, looking at the forecast.

Changing the amp. Ok, there's nowt wrong with the one I have already, it does everything I need it to do... but its probable replacement has a respectable MC phono stage (to reduce box count) and Richers have a six year warranty. The amp may well outlast me, maybe the warranty will too!
Can't decide between this and the black one with silver knobs. First world problems.

We have a similar sort of issue with a young bloke across the road - Our house is on a T junction where the adjoining road faces our house. Beginning at this time of year he starts his car about 7am and his headlights shine right at our bedroom window. And he just sits there in his car for a few minutes before setting off.
I have a feeling Anita may be less tolerant this year than last year, so something might be said.
Drizzle - constant and unrelenting drizzle. Mild temperature though.

Heavy rain and 50 mile an hour winds tomorrow for us.
Of course it would be as I have to go over to Newcastle for a reunion dinner, was planning to walk it.
I do nothing for weeks on end and the one time I have to go out...

Cold, wet and windy all day, max temp 6C. Was in sunny Blackpool all day, wasn't any better there.
6C, heavy rain, wind at 56mph.
Had to put the lights on at 1600.
Due to carry on like this until 0900 tomorrow.
Tipped it down all day and no signs of it stopping. Sue had to turn around and find another route to collect daughter from school due to a tree down, mercifully I have no intention of leaving the house until Monday.
Just been down the shop and it's unbelievably bad and I have to go out again to this do.
Funny enough last time I had to go out was for NEBO and it was unbelievably bad then too. I mean what are the odds?

I've finally accepted the inevitability of winter - bikes bagged up until at least March and batteries disconnected. I wish I could go into a kind of suspended animation for the winter, in one of those pods in the Alien film. With the added bonus of dodging Christmas.

Someone really needs to invent suspended animation, there's so many uses for it. Aside from dodging winter and Christmas you could use it for long plane flights. Once you check in you go into the pod and are woken up at the destination airport. Clear customs and that's it, you're on holiday without having to endure the hideousness of the actual flight.
Or anywhere with long waiting times. Doctor, dentist, theme parks, my local corner shop.

Nice, bright day but proper cold.
Tried out my new jacket which did the job.
I've resorted to winter jacket which is thicker than summer jacket but winter coat yet to come out. Won't be long though.
Was okay today as although the wind was bitter it wasn't that strong, and there was some warmth in the sun.
Lights on at 1630 but less than 5 weeks now to the shortest day.
Going to have chippy tea tonight to warm up.

Had to scrape the frost off the van this morning, and there was a puddle of ice on the drive. Also I had me thermal long johns under my work pants for the first time since last winter. So yes, a chilly day.
But I was working on the sunny side of a house, so really quite pleasant. And a flask of beef broth helped too :)

It hasn't stopped raining since I got up at 7am, and a couple of hours ago we had 20 minutes of hailstones with thunder. So all the stuff I'd planned to do today I've moved back 24 hrs.
So instead we're watching "Kingdom" on TV (a David Attenborough jobbie about the four main predators in Zambia). They seem to be enjoying nice weather, but on balance I'm probably safer indoors with the heating on.

We've had rain almost constantly but with some hail and then snow. It's flipping' cold and the biting wind enhances that. A truly horrid day which has now wiped out our Dahlias.:eek:
Snow on the way back from Bury St Edmunds a couple of hours ago, but dry back at home now, though flipping freezing. Heating has gone on upstairs for the first time. Downstairs in my study it is 14.6c, I’m toughing it out wearing quite a thick jacket so ok but fingers are cold!

Not a good sign that happening this early in the year.

Often terraced houses are helped by each other, insulating the sides against the weather. You need to have a word with your neighbours, tell them not to be such tight wads and turn their heating up.
I'm in London at the moment and according to the car it's 5C outside.
Wearing three layers of clothing and some heavy duty thick corduroy trousers, so I'm OK.

One side the house is empty so no free heating from there.
It's mainly because this room is so big. It's only an issue when the external temperature drops below 4C. Usually a 500 watt oil filled radiator is enough.

You could maybe do with a heater at each end of the room, turned down a bit. probably wouldn't cost much more to run, apart from the purchase price.
I wonder if a dehumidifier would help? Reducing the humidity might make it feel warmer.

Humidity right now in here is 57% so not high, it rarely goes above 65. I do have a big dehumidifier I use in the kitchen where it can sometimes get to 85%. Emptied about 2 pints out of it yesterday.

Yeah I'd say humidity isn't a thing at yours. Though I'd also say that half a kilowatt of heating in a room as large as yours is going to struggle. It's only half of a bar of an electric fire after all.
I'm betting the UK is one of the world's most expensive places for energy. I'm sitting here in my fleecy hoodie and counting off the days to next spring. I reckon if we'd got our finger out with nuclear power 30 years ago we'd be doing a lot better now. As it is now any improvements will be way past my bedtime.

Has to be 22C before I'm comfortable so that's not far off and I've lived all my life here and the house I grew up in was like a barn.
She's skinny like me IIRC? That doesn't help.
Wood burner got lit for the first time this season tonight. Regardless of whether it heated up the house it is lovely to look at. [emoji846]

See, this is what puts me off winter holidays, the coming to terms with our shit weather afterwards. Anita wants to go to the Canaries somewhere after Christmas, so I guess that's happening. For me a winter holiday should run till at least March.

Drizzle here too, 6c, no frost predicted tonight but more drizzle all day and tomorrow.
4c supposed to get to 7 but doesn't look promising.
Need to go out in a bit as I'm out of chocolate biscuits.

Just back from a very soggy dog walk - now I'm home it's stopped raining and the sun is trying to come out! 9c.
Only 5C here. Rain has stopped but so has the sunshine although it's still quite bright out.
Big floods at the end of the street from the overnight rain.
4 more weeks and the days start getting longer again.

But then we'll only be 6 weeks from the end of winter and ten from the clocks going forward.

I don't think it can, cold air is piss poor at holding moisture. It's why air is so much clearer, enabling you to see greater distances on really cold days. Maybe your hygrometer is broken, or just the best one they had for sale at Home Bargains.

I had a friend who used to maintain the CDC computer the Met Office used to model and predict the weather. He would jokingly say to security on arrival (the Met Office is part of the MoD) that he had come to replace the calibrated seaweed and fir cones used to predict the weather!

Makes sense I suppose. There is rain forecast for tomorrow afternoon. But with clear skies right now and 1C temperature it's still hard to understand why it's so high currently.

Looking ahead on BBC Weather, humidity is running at around 80-90%, despite daily rain up to and including 8th December. I'm going to do a bit of Googling, see if they can make sense of it.

This bloke explains it in a way even I can follow:
There is always some amount of moisture in the air. When most people talk about humidity, they are referring to relative humidity. So 89% means the air where you are has 89% of the moisture that it's able to hold. 100% relative humidity is called saturation - the air can literally take on no more water.
But, cooler air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air. So the absolute humidity (actual amount of water vapor in the air) depends on air temperature.
89% relative humidity in summer has a lot more water vapor than 89% relative humidity in winter.
Source: My college meteorology class from 26 years ago. I'm going off of memory here so someone please correct me if I'm wrong lol.

Pretty sharp frost this morning. Temps set to rise later, but with wind and rain. Tomorrow will be in the low teens. I'd rather have the frost and sunshine.

10C here but very dull, not even properly light yet even though sunrise was half an hour ago.

A surprising 12c this morning
11C here. I got condensation on the outside of the kitchen window I think because it's colder inside than out. Opened the windows to warm the place up a bit.

It's only the kitchen that gets really cold but it does mean I can leave the butter out.
Imagine what it was like when I first bought the place. Single glazing and knackered old doors including a ludicrous wood frame 'patio door' that was so rotten a five year old could have broken it down. Had to replace the lot, cost me a lot of money I didn't really have.
Paid over the odds really, they were asking £30K and I offered 29 which they had my arm off for. Should really have been about 24K but I wanted the big living room and there's not many that have it so I was quite keen to buy it.
Previous owners stayed warm by running two 5 bar gas fires. Must have cost the earth.

Those kitchens will never have been well insulated, particularly the roof. It should be possible to better insulate the ceiling roof space, but you do need to have some heat worth insulating.
I bet a lot of your lounge heat goes up the stairs too.

It does but it only goes up to a small enclosed landing where I dry clothes.

Only a tiny bit of rain today, and 13C. But the Bowland fells, visible from my brother's back garden, were under cloud and they're only 1400 feet. So that's proper overcast. Forecast to be just 7 or 8C tomorrow.

Our bins too, plastics/glass/tins bin, cardboard bin, and one of the garden bins. We have this planner from the council, with the appropriate colour bins marked on the relevant dates. So Mrs. P has no excuse :)
Same here, save plastic is separate from tins and glass. My partner doesn't understand the system and often puts plastic bags in with the paper or cardboard, so I have discreetly separate them out when I put out the recycling.
I can understand her confusion because by 'plastic' they mean plastic that can be chipped: such as milk containers , or yogurt pots. They don't want polystyrene, plastic bags or hard plastics such as polycarbonate, for example CD cases.

A cloudy 3c after a very wet night
Been raining here continually since 2200 last night and due to carry on until 2200 tonight. Flood warnings issued. 4C so it's not even warm by way of compensation.
We had yellow weather warnings for rain, but it's hardy even drizzle at the moment. We've got your warmth "darn sarf" - 11c currently.
Stopped raining here so took the opportunity to go out and provision. Not too bad out, when the wind isn't blowing it's quite mild.
