Environmental issues were being discussed before '73. There was Rachael Carson's "Silent Spring" for example.

Doug Trumbull’s Silent Running movie with Bruce Dern was ‘72.

Fun fact,
one of its writers was Stephen Bochco, who later went on to create Hill Street Blues.
