View Full Version : WTD: passive pre-amp
I intend to connect a DAC direct to a power-amp, but not quite sure i fully trust the digital volume control on the DAC or my fat fingers' reliability in setting the volume on the DAC's app. I would feel happier with something analogue/mechanical in the way, to limit the maximum power to something that is not going to blow up my speakers. So does anyone have a cheap but decent pot-in-a-box? I don't really need input selection, but wouldn't say no. The main thing I am after is some reliable, transparent attenuation.
I have a Pass B1 if that's of any interest? Fitted with Khozmo stepped attenuator. Multiple inputs. In a full-width case.
£220 delivered. Can post tomorrow.
Thanks Macca for the offer, but I am looking for something considerably cheaper. Maybe even some inline RCA attenuators if anyone has some spare?
I have some Rothwell attenuators somewhere. Can have a look for them tomorrow if nothing else comes along in the meantime.

I used to have one of these (https://www.amazon.co.uk/DollaTek-Precision-Passive-Controller-Preamplifier/dp/B07T2932Q5/ref=sr_1_4?crid=39V3X0L3SJ1NP&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.H900ZtyWBpEIOBk2IlLt7SQBS5U8YEgp8 VHui9eTUMwMg8OgkSP1zXz_nnRxia2rSm1sEb_efwDz8T-oRW4NLWj3Gs8yRwkYK9EBQNP5dwcX9GHW0qd_61HYTjyqZPVUZ qUMEa-GrrTsgW6p67yxyDddltb479TkAuSg5ZQWMrQHdEY5szqiBkk_B T7wAC8zzBauT0-KyQCNASrwDf6MtvDJfHIwJVsVnomThqi220o.8vKlJVwf_62Tz ftxxZLShzNEKqbN2Ga2lIAve-yzZo4&dib_tag=se&keywords=passive+preamp+volume+control&qid=1754846948&sprefix=passive+preamp%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-4)

Only one input but it seemed to be pretty transparent to me, and only £22!
Ill have a tisbury passive mk2 for sale in about10 days.
It will be 85 delivered.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and offers. I think I'll probably just go for the inline attenuators, saves an unnecessary cable run and does what I need them to do. Quick calculation: 2V DAC out -10dB = 0.6325V power amp in, which has an input sensitivity of 0.65V. There are a couple of cheap pairs of Rothwells on Ebay but, Martin, if you particularly want to move yours on please let me know, though they sound like the sort of things that would be handy to keep around.
I'll have a look for them although I have crippled myself by getting up in the night for a slash and colliding with the furniture while still half-asleep. Meaning I will not be able to do the mile walk to the nearest post office for a while.
If you need them quick then buy them off ebay.
Sorry to hear that Martin. Just bought the last used pair on Ebay so no need for long walks to the Post Office. Hope you're feeling better soon.
