Today is my first listening session with the SME Model 10 and SME V and OMG I wasn’t prepared for the sheer solidity of the sound ! The depth and width of the soundstage, the placement of instruments and vocals and that deep rhythmic bass ! Now my Pink Triangle Anniversary SME V was no slouch in any of these areas but the SME takes everything to the next level. The Anniversary was launched in the very late 1980’s and at the time when the legendary Linn LP12 ruled the roost and although there were other fine alternatives from Roksan; Michell and Alaphason etc, none until the Anni really challenged the LP12’s dominance. The Anniversary with SME IV or V was sited by many reviewers as the closest vinyl reproduction to master tape available. Of course when the SME Model 30 was launched in 1991 it may have redefined the SOTA for vinyl replay, however, at over £9,000 it was out of reach for many music lovers, especially when the likes of the Anni with SME V retailed at around £4,000 ! Any regrets changing to the SME Model 10, no not one, of course I will always have a strong affection for the Anni which I purchased new with a SME V in December 1992 and was part of my music life for over 32 years but the Model 10 and SME V are delivering a new level of enjoyment and are further demonstrating just what an exceptional cartridge the Phasemation PP 500 is.
