Bright sunshine, 14C and expected to reach 29C late afternoon, but it will feel like 26C.
May go out today to look at laptops: not a task I'm looking forward to as I'm sure to get bamboozled by 'techspeak' and jargon.

Well that's never happened before. I just did a lengthy reply to Macca's post about wasps, but the thread has just been closed and took my post with it! Oh well, I'm not writing it again, takes me ages typing with two fingers.
So I'll just say it's a sunny 17C already, pretty good for May.

I got a new one in February but from the local shop, he takes care of everything and you just go in and pick it up. Could not face going to PC World/ Currys type places even if it would have saved me fifty quid. Plus any problems he's just two streets away.

May I ask you what you chose Martin: manufacturer; screen size; ram size; cpu name and speed, etc.

It's an HP255 G9 - 15.6'' screen, 8GB RAM, 512GB hard drive, Ryzen 5 CPU - 2.3GHz but can boost to 4.3Ghz
This one here is I think the exact same. About what I paid too even though at the time I paid a premium for the personalised service, seems prices have gone up since February

Only changed since my old one won't run Windows 11 and Windows 10 support finishes this year. Plus the old one was getting very slow as it approaches the monthly Windows update day.

Today was fabulous, hit 28c according to my car but the heat was not oppressive at all. Slowly declining towards the bank holiday as usual! :rolleyes:

As long as they don't go to ten months per year - Christmas is way too frequent as it is, especially since the run up starts in September these days. Biennial would do for me.
A bit like those who are born on the 29th February - they can only celebrate their birthday every four years. :D

Slightly cooler 9C today, with a predicted high of 17C. That'll do for me.
15c here, quite cloudy but should clear and get to 21c. A couple of degrees cooler tomorrow but then forecast to drop like a stone on Sunday with a maximum of 11c! Then gradually building to more usual temperatures for the time of year in the mid teens. No rain,though.

Bank holidays now meaningless to me (except for their effect on the weather ofc) unless I need to go to the bank.

With more and more banks going on a permanent holiday, maybe 'bank holiday' should be given an new name, like "shit weather weekend" :(

A clear but cool day at 7c so far
Been out to get food. Sunny but it's a bit nippy, had to zip my jacket up after a few hundred yards.
The trouble with these warm spells is you get used to them really quick and they don't last.
Similar here, in the sun it was quite warm on our walk but as soon as it disappeared behind a cloud or if we were in the shade the wind was bitter. 9c but felt colder. Had a few very short showers, too.
Dull and a bit chilly. Says it may brighten up later.

Quite a bit of rain this morning but cleared up and quite sunny now. Was going to finish power washing the drive (got half done on Saturday before our guests arrived) but it can wait until the weekend.
Can't recall last time we had rain. Must be two weeks ago, and it was in the night so never saw it.
Still dull here and only 10C. Sun came out briefly a couple of times earlier but I think its done for the day now. Supposed to warm steadily as the week goes on but the wind stays from the east.

I've taken the hose to the plants and lawns on three consecutive days now, grass is looking a bit brown.
They were saying on the telly this morning that suvverners might face bigger bills unless they cut down their water usage. So I'll make the most of it before the hosepipe bans land here - what the south gets eventually reaches us, like fashion and beer prices.

Wind is from the east, I think that's why. When it's from the west which is far more usual we get all that soggy Atlantic goodness coming over and dumping on us as it hits the Pennines. Then Yorkshire gets whatever's left over.
Hosepipe bans soon - plus visiting the reservoirs where you can once again see the village they flooded to make it. Did that years ago, walked across the bridge that had once crossed the stream that ran through the village. Can't remember where that was though.

That's the one. Or it's very like it.
Despite looking quite threatening the rain has held off. I've just cut the grass and was expecting it to rain just after I finished, but it hasn't.
So the prediction of a 20% chance of rain was right after all!

It really isn't that posh, it's just cappuccino pods. A bit posher than instant though. Grant was the king of true posh coffee.

I make do with a Mokka stove pot. I usually use Illy coffee, but at the moment I have a load of Cameroonian Coffee to hand.

Did I read somewhere that your partner hails from Cameroon? I had a look on t'internet, and it looks like travel there could be hazardous. Looks really nice though. It's a shame that some of the most beautiful places seem to be marred by conflict.

Yes, she hails from Cameroon. The only 'dodgy' part of Cameroon is in the north, bordering on Chad. Shame really as that is where the wild life is to be found.
I've been to 75 countries around the world, many of them, sadly, I would not want to visit again as they have now either become too dangerous or undesirable: Yemen; Iran; Sudan; parts of Turkey; Uzbekistan; China (Tibet and Sinkiang province, both some of the more fascinating parts of China); Northern Pakistan and India (Kashmir); Mali, and Russia.
And the way Trump is behaving: Panama and possibly parts of El Salvador as well.
Lovely day, spent power washing the drive in the sunshine. Still 17c and set to hit 21c tomorrow - just about perfect for me, any warmer and I start to get uncomfortable.

22C now, forecast to reach 24C later this afternoon. That's as warm as I can put up with.
Just got back from a morning's ride up to Caton near Lancaster. That's far enough for Anita's first time on her bike this year, even stopping for a brew at Forton services on the way there, then a Cumberland sausage barm at Caton. They've reduced the limit to 50mph up there enforced by Specs cameras, but I don't mind, made for a more relaxed ride.
Yes it's 22C here as well, but I don't think it will get any higher today.
Just returned from a boot sale. We made an overall profit of £63, so not too bad. Despite there being hundreds of CDs for sale (some at 50p apiece :) ) and probably the same number of LPs, I didn't buy any.
What I did pick up was a snazzy electronic lighter for candles and gas hobs. It can be charged via a USB outlet.
Someone here (sorry, I forget who it was) had read on another forum that such a device could diminish the static build up on vinyl. I was pretty dismissive of the idea, from a theoretical point of view, but now I have bought one (for £2, brand new and still sealed in its box), I may have to change my opinion.

I don't mind a bit of rain now and again. We're not getting much even when it does. I can't remember getting into May before with grass this patchy and yellow and our pond level so low. The frog has given up and gone somewhere else...

No grass round here only weeds, but they still seem to be pretty green even though it's been so long since it rained here, we've forgotten what rain is.
There's even new weeds coming up between the flags on my forecourt so clearly they don't need water at all. Science gets it wrong again.

Breaking news - it's raining in Wigan! Reported to me just now by Anita, because she can't remember how to put the wipers on.
Bright here but it's a bit hazy - forecast giving a 50% chance of rain later.
We could probably do with some, just to damp the dust down a bit.

20.5 C in my living room - new record for the year. At least a couple of degrees warmer than that outside.
Forecast says we're going to get some very heavy rain coming over around 1400, possibly some thunder and lightning too.
Time for a cup of tea and some music - get it in now as I like to unplug the hi-fi if there's an electrical storm.

:D I was just finding something to be doing before setting off to my daughter's at 8.30. Fixing fence panels, that kept me going till 11am. Then on to a customer to put up some hanging baskets in his garden. Then at 12.30 collecting French doors from suppliers for tomorrow's job. Then a chilled 30 minutes in a beer garden for a pint before setting off back to Chorley. So I did get out a bit :)
As for listening to music: it's hard when the house is full of people who think my music choices are worse than fingernails on a blackboard... my tunes usually go on when I have the house to myself.
I might have made up that bit about the windscreen wipers, she actually knows that Volvo and all of it's features like the back of her hand - unlike myself who drove back from Morecambe recently activating cruise control and resetting trip meters and God knows what else while trying to make wipers work :doh:

Very warm here, and the breeze is a relief rather than a uncomfortable nuisance.
Here, according to my phone, it didn't exceed 21C, yet it felt hotter, much hotter.
I've been a limp rag all day. Only now has it become pleasant.
Very strange.
I spent most of the day in the office, unfortunately, but it was another lovely day, didn't feel too oppressive at all in Bury St Edmunds on my lunchtime walk to the supermarket for a sandwich.

Just looked on the BBC weather app and it's showing that there could be rain starting a week on Friday, and for a few days. But it doesn't look like much. Sun's a bit hazy right now , but I'm sure that will burn off soon.
17c and sunny, should get up to 21c. Tomorrow looking overcast in the morning and only a maximum of 16c before more sun for Friday and the weekend.
Only got to 17C yesterday, it was pleasant enough though.
Looks like it will be similar today.
Wind finally changes from easterly to westerly next week so that's probably going to mean rain at some point.

No clouds again, and the temperature has reached 20C, a bit more than the predicted 17C. I was glad to be working on the north side of the house.
The customer breeds Maine Coon cats, and you should have seen the size of the dad, a proper unit. More like a dog. They have a litter of six kittens, which will sell for around £2k each:eek: Definitely indoor cats then.

The solution to droughts worldwide is to introduce more bank holidays.
Ethiopia is the most drought-ridden country in the world. Why? Only five bank holidays - and they don't even call them bank holidays.
They need to introduce about forty, and plan lots of outdoor leisure activities for them. Guaranteed to piss down. Moving the Wimbledon tennis tournament there would also be a big help.
They could also issue a barbeque to every family. As soon as they get them set up, it will cloud over and start spitting.

Similar here, after a chilly start. Got to creosote all the fencing bordering next door. He paints his side then gives me the stuff to do mine. What a nice man :)

Nothing exciting. Salami, tomatoes, croissants...they have the cheapest Yorkshire tea, that's mainly why I go in there. I get through a lot of tea.

Mad woman neighbour, who can't afford to have her problem tree cut back has gone to US for a four week holiday, so us and another neighbour are going to give it a severe haircut while she's away. I can hear his petrol chainsaw going at it right now, later we'll be doing the same. Then all the branches are getting dumped behind her shed, because the law says they're her property apparently.

Is that right? I think I read that if they overhang your property then they're yours. But that may be wrong and dumping them behind her shed is certainly easier.

I'll be cutting the grass, and will put the cuttings in the brown bin for the council to take away. They now charge us £60 a year for the service; so I would certainly put in the trimmed back branches of a neighbour's overhanging tree if the neighbour refused to accept them.

We have two garden waste bins which both have to be paid for, and we do fill them up with our own crap, so her branches will go behind her shed and we'll see what happens when she gets back. I wasn't aware of that part of the law that says if she doesn't want them I have to dispose at my own expense. But I don't think she'll even notice.
The tree really is a pain, every spring it sheds fluff which gets everywhere, in the house, even in your drinks when you're in the garden. Also it has a mad lean - if it goes down it'll take out her house and the back of ours.

Our garden waste bin is collected every two weeks, yet with a fortnight's worth of grass cuttings it is never more than half full.

They are called wood chippers and are available for hire. They are not paticularly cheap, the hire rate depends on the throat size of the chipper.

Start at £100 on Amazon but look like flimsy tat. Decent ones start at £500. Hire is just too expensive to be worth it.
May go with my original plan to dispose of them in my standard wheelie bin, bit by bit. Similar to how they got rid of the soil in 'The Great Escape.'

Thunder in the mountains! well, a bit of a rumble over Rivington Pike. And the sky over there is very dark. Looks like it's heading our way.
We're due about 1900 according to the radar thing but that can always change.
60 percent chance of rain tomorrow though.
Gone very dark here, sky is ominous. Could be our first rain in weeks.
Got the grass cut and tidied up the garden whilst the weather here was fine.

Forecast looks the same here too, rain by the weekend. A more typical bank holiday, and those in full-time work will no doubt be gnashing about that. But for us 'retired' folk, a bank holiday is just another day, but with crappier traffic conditions. After a solid fifty years of employment I feel I've earned my smugness :)

So everyday is a holiday for me.

I don't know if forty years employment will have paid enough stamps to provide a full state pension come retirement age. probably not. It might be worth looking into that, there's stuff that can be done which won't necessarily be expensive. There is a Gov. website where you can calculate this.

I always intended to retire at 60. When I reached 50, I thought I might be able to retire at 55 if my investments continued to perform as well as they had been doing to date. Unfortunately, global economic difficulties in the first few years of the 21st century meant that objective would not be possible. However by taking voluntary redundancy I did in fact 'retire' at the age of 57.

My eldest is 16 and she wants to be a Doctor. So that’s at least 7 years more of financial support. Will who is 13 next month probably wants to be a YouTuber or professional gamer. He does suggest he wants to do something musical, he’s a good drummer and also plays piano and sax. So that’s at least 70 more years of financial support - hopefully his surgeon sister will find it in her heart to support her penniless brother when I’m gone!
I sympathise Alex. I have spent around £20k, helping my partner's granddaughters through university.
Mirabile dictu they both achieved First Class Honours in their respective subjects, but it's not clear what they are going to do with their degrees.

Lol - Doctor is good though. One of my cousins is a Doctor. We all laughed when he said he was going to do medicine, but 40 years on he's now at the top of the profession.

Dull here but supposed to get sunny this afternoon.
Tomorrow forecast to be warm and sunny. Saturday and Sunday are both raining all day. Monday to be dull and a max of 14C. Textbook bank holiday weekend.
About the same here, overcast and 10c, may brighten up late afternoon if we’re lucky. Sunday now looking reasonable, which is good as only day we plan on going out (to the “Middy in the 40’s” day at the Suffolk Light Railway https://www.mslr.org.uk/visit-us/middy-in-the-war-years/ ) and BBQ in the evening. Forecast could still be wrong, though,

A sunny 9C right now. Perfect for the fencing job I never asked for. But I'm well prepared (You Tube videos) and I have everything I need - sunshine, materials delivered to site, and someone else to do all the hard work :) What could possibly go wrong?

Actually if they leave it alone long enough it does get a pretty amazing selection of wild flowers on it. Up until March though it was used as a builder's yard while they were building the student halls next to it and that's ruined it for this season.
Don't know if you've seen Charlie Dimmock recently but I'd have to put on about ten stone to even come close.

Yes I've seen her recently, hard to miss. She does a garden improvement TV show, you can't see what she's done till she gets out of the way. You could get her to work on your yard, but you'd have to make a bit of space first.

Just been round to Sainsburys - humidity is through the roof, it's like being in the tropics. Not raining at the moment but a lot of ominous clouds all around.
Quite a lot of rain overnight, and looks like we'll get it again tonight. Sun i trying its best to burn through the clouds, and it's warm at 22c. Chance of a light rain shower tomorrow morning otherwise the prediction is that it will be a nice day for the war time train shenanigans and BBQ.

Went to a boot sale today. Whilst there was a very brief period of light rain, but despite that we did very well.

5 weeks? Bit more than that. When I looked back through the posts, the last rain we had was a bit of overnight on 12th March. Proper rain 30 minutes ago, bouncing off the car and sunny at the same time with accompanying double rainbow.

Whenever I visited, the flood has always gone, which is a bit disappointing as it sounds lovely.
If the council had owt about them they could make it permanent, and it wouldn't have to cost a fortune - a bit of landscaping, plant some nice trees, put in a couple of picnic benches and a small cafe. Ok they might have to make your road into a cul-de-sac and mess with the one-way system a bit, but it's all quite doable.
Add a few ducks and some koi carp and you're all set :) Of course persuading the council would be an uphill task, there's always someone whose job it is to throw up obstacles.

It's a five way junction so they'd have to make quite a few roads into cul-de-sacs, not that it would bother me. A lake at the end of the street would be great, you could have those little motor boats for hire. Link it to the canal and rich people would come and moor their super-yachts there just like in Geneva.
It would attract wildlife like geese and flamingos. Probably.
Like you say, too many detractors, there's no 'vision' anymore.

I think the super yachts thing might be a bit ambitious, canal access would need too much work, being only about 5 feet deep and a bit narrow. But making the junction into 5 cul-de-sacs shouldn't be too much of a problem, provided a reliable ferry service is laid on.
"Build it and they will come" - ducks and water fowl will just turn up when they see how nice it is. But koi carp might be an expensive mistake, I've heard that East Europeans are partial to line-caught coarse fish. Better going with oi carp, a carp/piranha hybrid, genetically engineered to punish unwanted handling.

Good idea, we could dispose of our food waste by simply feeding it to the piranha carp. No more stinking bins.
Local cats would also have something else to go at other than the pigeons and rats.
People wanting to dispose of shopping trolleys they have inadvertently acquired would no longer have to trundle them all the way to the canal.

Neither - I've done it before and Happy wasn't interested. She did want to go on a ride in the amusement park however. Not for me: even the most gentle of rides make me feel nauseous, or bring on a severe attack of vertigo!
Made up for it by having a nice relaxed lunch in the Royal Hotel (built in 1791, so over two centuries old).
Very dull now, but the rain has held off so far, long enough to give me enough time to do a load of hedge cutting. 16c so not too hot. Forecast looks unsettled for the next couple of weeks.

Third sunny morning in a row. Sun comes out between 6.30am and 7.30, coming through the window and making it hard to see my laptop screen. I suppose I could close the blinds or sit somewhere else, but that would involve moving.
Now the sun has passed the window it has gone behind clouds as per usual, it'll be back to rain soon.
Rain due to start here any time now according to the forecast. Then goes on until 1900.
Should probably go shopping now as got no food left at all except for one little yoghurt pot.
Needless to say as soon as I got out the front door it started pissing down. Plus I ran into my elderly neighbour who was also going round to the Sainsbury and walks about 1 mile an hour so really might as well just have jumped fully clothed into a swimming pool by the time I got there.

That'll teach you to look out the window before leaving the house... Maybe you could go halves with him for a mobility scooter, one of those with the canvas cover and polythene windows to keep you dry. Not sure if you can get twin seat versions so you might have to take turns sitting in the basket.

I did that last week, it's about 2 mile walk. Got there and discovered the Aldi had turned into a gym. There was a MacDonalds next door, so I had a cheeseburger and walked home.
When I got back decided to look online and see when the Aldi had closed down. Discovered that it had not closed or moved, it was still there. It's just on the next block along from the gym. Where it's always been for 20 odd years. :doh:

Been to Bedford and back, most of it in the rain. Home now and sunny spells, 17c.
Off to the Suffolk Show tomorrow, forecast has improved during the run up and now looks like it will be dry, sunny spells in the afternoon and a high of 22c. Nice.
