Wharfedale Dovedale 3 Bass Unit Intermittent

Happy Easter

I have Had a re occurring fault with a 12" bass unit on a Wharfedale Dovedale 3 which I'm hoping is a loose connection as sometimes will work with no problem but then you will hear an intermittent drop out then come back then out again before working the rest of the time then back to no output looks like it could be the Tinsel wires on the coil which has a loose connection when the tinsel wires on the coil move this appears to have an affect on working but then again could be a cap in the crossover? Very strange fault which has occurred before with 2 different amplifiers so its the unit , Xover along the chain causing a problem no problem in finding a replacement 12" unit but no good buying one if the fault is in the crossover anyway booking in with a tech just gathering ideas on the possible cause.

I have soldered faulty Tinsel wire before, tricky to get at usually.

I think it's less thin and tricky on a woofer than a tweeter, I've done both before. Any slight mistake and the wire or voice coil are effectively ruined.

(I think lead solder is better with an iron with a variable heat setting, as it has a lower melting point, but it's tricky to get hold of as I think it's not made any more.)

Tin-lead solder is still readily available.

True just harder to get hold of I think it's only supposed to be sold to "professionals"' in theory?

You can buy tin-lead solder from Amazon. Just make sure you choose small diameter resin cored solder for the task of repairing the tinsel speaker wires.

Yep i was right and best to replace with new tinsel wire the coil is fine Phew couple of days should be up and running again :)
