Going from a 2017 Sony A1E OLED to the latest LG G5, at 83”.
OLED panel tech has moved on a fair bit from when I got the Sony.
The latest LG G5 has a new OLED panel technology that’s much brighter and has deeper more saturated colours, than even last years LG’s G4 MLA OLED panel.
Setting up a good surround Soundbar with it too (Samsung Q990D) previously just 2 channel, so that’s an added element to movies which I’ll enjoy.
Richer Sounds offers a free LG US95TR soundbar with it (RRP£1699!) but bought the Samsung as its better sounding, and can sell on the LG one.
Reviews say the LG G5 is the one to get, just need to pick the first movie to watch on it!
That’s a 65” up on the wall now, this thing dwarfs it.
Bit of an investment this,
was going to change Dacs and rejig my digital but went down this path instead.
Digitals more than good enough.
Need to rejig my setup, want the tv lower down at eye level so will mount the Turntable on the wall off to the side, leaving the AV rack free to mount the Soundbar on.
Usually install these myself, but not with this big beastie.
be getting a Company in to do it, their liability if it gets dropped! :lol:

4K Blu-rays from my modded Oppo 203 should look great on it.
AppleTV’s Dolby Vision playback is outstanding, can’t wait to revisit my Apple 4K movie library on this thing.
Will update this thread when it’s installed,
I’ll be looking at getting it calibrated after burn in, be looking at best settings, tweaks etc.
Nice one Gary. :) The only TVs we have are Sony or LG OLEDs. Though none of them are as large as your new arrival.
A good investment, especially if you watch a lot of DVDs.

We bought an LG OLED a few years ago when they were relatively new to the market but ours is a mere 55". You certainly own the bragging rights!

Its part of the Samsung Q990-D set that I bought to go with the telly Martin.

Right. I've not really explored the exciting world of soundbars. One of my brothers has a Cambridge that's surprisingly decent. Good enough for watching casually anyway.

I'd always go Richer Sounds for Tellys, they offer a six year free warranty.
Zero quibbles too: Had to use it twice with my Sony OLED, brought replacement to the house and took away old one.

I'd been saying next year too, but decided to push the button this year instead. Gone for an LG OLED G5 (which I think is the same as Gary's (though only 65"). Started out at Currys looking at cheaper tellies, but once we'd seen the LG there was no going back :)
So then it was off to Richer Sounds to buy one - we'd always buy from them, as I'm sure many do (the bloke in Richers described Currys as their own main showroom!) Will be arriving Tuesday, but as the telly isn't the last word in sound quality, and the 'free' soundbar that comes with it is only so-so, They'll be returning to set up my surround sound shit, as it's never been right and I lack the patience to get it right... some good viewing in the near future :)
One other thing about Richer Sounds - salesman suggested that we keep the soundbar boxed and unused for a while, as the upcoming sales may make our telly cheaper on a different deal, in which case we might be returning the soundbar and getting some money refunded... how cool is that? Good people at Richer Sounds.
I got my telly there although the salesman told me he didn't even own a telly himself.
Getting your AV stuff all set up for you is good - and you've no neighbours...

Neighbours... everybody needs good neighbours :) I do have neighbours - one side there's 20 metres of empty space between us and them, besides they are great, become good pals, we cook for each other. That's when good neighbours become good friends :)
On the other side there's only 10 metres, but she doesn't count because she's mental, and spends much of her time in America it seems.

The warranty is always good with RS. John Lewis was the other place I would contemplate if I was still living in the U.K.
I am fortunate that I practically live in the middle of a field, so neighbours are not a problem. It was the wife that moaned, so I bought her some Bose noise cancelling headphones. ;)
I can see her point, as my XTZ 1x12 sub certainly packs a punch. As the home cinema room is directly above the kitchen and lounge, it does get a bit loud at times.

Originally the plan was to get a telly around 75", but after we saw the G5 it had to be that. Unfortunately the price was :eek: (we'd only planned to spend about £1k). So we decided we'd rather have 65" of OLED Evo than a giant screen of anything else... still a big overspend for us, so we vowed that neither of us get anything else for birthday or Christmas - both our birthdays and Christmas all happen inside of four weeks. The sacrifices we have to make eh?

It's not an every day thing - when neighbour's wife was laid up for a couple of weeks after a cancer op a couple of years ago, she wasn't well enough to cook. And her husband can't cook to save his life, even worse than me. So Anita would cook bigger quantities and we'd be a 'meals on wheels' service.
Mrs. neighbour is back to full health, but they really like Anita's cottage pie, so she does extra for them. In return, they regularly do banana loaves and bread and butter puddings and make extra for us.
So not that odd really. We also have a regular magazine swap (Hifi Choice, What Hifi and 'Lancashire Life' incoming, Which? magazine outgoing). We count ourselves lucky, neighbour on the other side is a bit of a nutjob.

Telly's arriving tomorrow afternoon, but I may not have it up and running till Thursday. First I'll be dicking around with the wall behind it - I want to put up some 'acoustic panels' (you know the stuff, looks like vertical wood slats) to conceal the cables, and some ambient lighting, and I may as well do it before mounting the telly.

No, it's 55".
I'm only about 8 feet from the screen, so I felt 65" was fine. Being sat close to a really big screen within my budget would really show up its shortcomings.
Anita sits a bit further away, but with her glasses she can see Blackpool tower on a clear day, so she'll be ok.
well you'll notice the extra ten inches - he said channelling Frankie Howard.
I went 50 to 55 - regretted it. Should have gone at least 60. Although 55 is optimal for 8 foot distance according to the charts.

Another important difference is weight: 23.5 kg vs. 14 kg. On the face of it not massive numbers, but of course things always feel heavier when they're fragile. Enlist some warm bodies to help you Ali :)

The C4 is a great TV, I have the C3 and it's a superb OLED, even beat my Sony Bravia.

No need to calculate the screen size exactly. All you need to do is to recognise the difference in size is 77/55 = 7/5 = 1.4. That means both the width and height of the screen is increased by a factor of 1.4, so the area is is increased by (1.4)2 = 1.96, or as you correctly say, just under twice the area.

It's a 55" Bravia I have at the moment, good telly.
We have three TVs: two LG and a Sony. All are small, around 43" in size and all are viewed from a distance of 8 to 10', which is quite satisfactory IMO.
I don't like watching overlarge screens - even when at the cinema I try to sit as far back as possible, and on 'bore site'.

It was seeing an LG in Currys and how good the picture was that set me off. Always thought the Bravia was decent, especially once I found a setup program on a Sony forum which really made an improvement, but what I saw in Currys knocked it into a cocked hat.
Agree - both the LGs are better than the Sony. The Sony is a little older than the LGs and at the time Sony TVs were held in high regard. Comparing the three, my only criticism is that the 'greens' on the Sony are a little too prominent, and I can't find a way to correct it.

A lot of the telly I watch is from decades ago so not high resolution anyway, and with films the colour processing varies so much it's hard to say what is 'accurate' or whether it even matters. Likewise with the colour graduation from black - as long as I can see what's happening, that's fine.

If you were to see an over-enlarged picture in a newspaper, it'll just be an ill-defined cluster of dots rather than a clear picture. For the same reason watching old TV programmes in SD close up on a giant screen will be hard going.
Apart from watching Lovejoy, where it should be easier to count the wrinkles.

We have a TV in every room of the house except the bathrooms. So 8 tellies for 4 people! :lol: I'm watching the darts right now (on ITV4 - bet Martin's pissed at that! ;) ) - on my iPad! I regularly have music on, TV on iPad and doing stuff on my computer at the same time.
Our main TV is a 65" Samsung, it isn't particularly flash or expensive, must be 7 or 8 years old now, but the picture still astounds me sometimes. The screen went all funny (cloudy areas that were discoloured) - I have a D&G plan that either repairs or replaces - they repaired it, so I guess I'll keep it until it finally is unrepairable!

I've got the old telly off the wall now, and made a start on the wall panelling. But I won't get help putting up the new TV until 10am tomorrow. Until then we are telly-less, so we're sitting here with the radio on.

I'll take a bigger screen with lower resolution over the opposite every time. If that's the choice for a given budget.

Well after a nightmare 48 hours of putting up acoustic panels, hanging the telly, getting it to work (in spite of the stupidly fast and impossible to follow 'speaking' guidance, and dealing with the ridiculous amount of spaghetti that comes with having TV, LED ambient lighting, broadband router, Fire Stick, Sky Q box, Sub, and A/v amp with the attendant wires for 5.1, and another hour or two trying to work out why the TV wasn't 'talking' to the amp (mixed up the HDMIs between amp and Sky box) :doh: we're finally up and running.
Happy with it all now, but we're now left with an LG soundbar that won't get used, in a giant box that we don't have space for. Don't know what to do with it, Ebay is awash with unsold soundbars probably listed by folk in same position as us.
Well after a nightmare 48 hours of putting up acoustic panels, hanging the telly, getting it to work (in spite of the stupidly fast and impossible to follow 'speaking' guidance, and dealing with the ridiculous amount of spaghetti that comes with having TV, LED ambient lighting, broadband router, Fire Stick, Sky Q box, Sub, and A/v amp with the attendant wires for 5.1, and another hour or two trying to work out why the TV wasn't 'talking' to the amp (mixed up the HDMIs between amp and Sky box) :doh: we're finally up and running.
Happy with it all now, but we're now left with an LG soundbar that won't get used, in a giant box that we don't have space for. Don't know what to do with it, Ebay is awash with unsold soundbars probably listed by folk in same position as us.
Which model LG sound bar were you looking to get rid of Steve?

It's a US90TY, 5.1.3 ch high resolution audio with Dolby Atmos (says on the box). I've not opened it up, so I don't know what it looks like. But it seems to be well regarded, and it's a shame not to be using it, but our lounge already looks like the storeroom at Tandy, and I don't want to add even more stuff.
It's all wireless, but they still have to be plugged in somewhere.

Have the LG set up now, it's huge! Getting it on the floorstanding metal stand I use was fun. Would be easy with two people but had to do it myself. Ended up putting the telly face down on the floor and bolting the stand up to the back, then pulling it all upright. Followed a youtube video for the TV settings and it gives a great result. The physical size will take a bit of getting used to..

I started off watching "Man of Steel" (for the picture and also to give the sub a workout), then one of the Shrek films, and now "Ballard" on Prime. Between all the Sky Channels, Prime, Netflix, Paramount+, You Tube, as well as all the stuff available via a "sneaky box", I've no shortage of crap just waiting to be avoided :)

it’s a Gamechanger, especially with a good OLED.
Built in apps in TVs are really gypped in comparison.

Plenty nights I struggle to find anything. Talking Pictures has been crap for a few months now, they used to have a decent film at least once in a while.
Film Four's not what it used to be either. ITV will show the same film once a week for a month. Right now they're showing 'Harry Crap And The Goblet Of Crap' which was only on the other day.
Sunday you could at least rely on there being a couple of Westerns on TCM but they took that off us although the yanks still have it.
Maybe I'm just too fussy.
What's on Film Four now? 'Sister Act.' A film so bad it was only surpassed by its sequel - 'Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit.'
Films that make you want to go on a killing spree. I rest my case. :D

Enough new stuff out there on Netflix etc to "channel surf" if I feel like it.
Cant beat the Bluray library though (my own personally curated Criterion Closet) when sitting down to watch something a bit more special.
The picture/audio quality (hence involvement) is off the chart compared to streaming, even with the “4K” streams.
Bitrate on physical media is many multiples of what streaming can do, and it’s right there for your eyes and ears to enjoy.
Regret selling a lot of my CDs when I went Streaming, but enjoying spinning discs again and have most of the ones I missed back again.

Going though a bit of a 70's Distopian SciFi phase at the moment :)
THX1138 was Lucas's undergraduate film submitted in part for his degree. It's an excellent piece of sci-fi dystopia. His following Star Wars films are IMO quite inferior.
Logan's Run is another dystopian film, but this time concerns a society run by a thanatocracy, but again, IMO, it is complete rubbish.

The downside of using the wife/pound conversion when buying kit :doh: As the years advance I find myself thinking about what'll happen to it all more and more.
If I were to tell my partner the worth of all my audio gear I think she would faint with surprise/shock. Mind you it would only fetch that amount if sold to an audio enthusiast who is interested in vintage gear.

Found one annoying thing- I have a Sonos soundbar fed via HDMI from the telly, but I also take an optical out to the Gustard DAC for when I want to play through the system. I could use either on the Sony without altering settings, but that doesn't appear to be the case with the LG, I have to change the output settings. Bit annoying. First World problems I know. :-)
People tend to snigger when they visit and see my small 50” Sony TV.
It is big enough for the lounge.
If we really want to watch something special, we retire to the home cinema room with a HD projector and a large screen.
The picture is not as good as an OLED TV, but you forget about that after the first few minutes.

Richer Sounds have this arrangement where if you see your purchase being offered Cheaper within 14 days (either elsewhere or from themselves), they will refund the difference. So we thought we'd give it a go, as our telly is now £200 cheaper in their 'Black Friday' promotion.
The process (done online and a quick call) took 15 minutes start to finish, and now £200 is already in my bank account :carrot: Gotta love those guys at Richers :)
That's great Steve, business wise Julian Richer is one of my heroes - his employees are treated extremely well and that translates into great customer service.
That's why they're still in business almost 50 years on when almost all the rest have gone.
And no-one else seems to learn the lesson and instead just races to the bottom.

Spoke to LG about this today. That said basically tough shit, only way to stop the tv defaulting to hdmi when I want to output optical is to remove the hdmi lead. This seems bloody ridiculous to me, my 8 year old Sony Bravia did this seamlessly. I have an hdmi splitter with an optical out that I used with my projector, that doesn't work either and it seems I'm not the only one looking at forums online. Pretty poor IMO given the price of these things.

Bought an optical splitter and the Sonos optical to hdmi adapter cable. Hope fully this will solve the issue.

The splitter and the Sonos optical-HDMI adapter solved the problem, though initially I thought it hadn't-had to go into the menu and set the remote to control Sonos devices, then all was well. Still think this is poor on LG's part, every other TV I've used I could do what I wanted to with no issue. Surely this could be remedied with a software update.
