I went last year not realising it was RSD. There was a queue! That was after lunch - I was told that in the morning, the queue had been right down the street.

Seems like a good day not to go to record shop.

I'd only be interested in CD anyway and they don't get the CDs in at the shop I go to.

If I could be sure of a bargain I might, but I don't think it works that way. All I ever bought was a mono recording of Deep Purple's Book of Taliesyn and Captain Beefheart's Safe as Milk. Both RSD 'specials', and neither were bargains.

I don't think it's about bargains, more about limited edition stuff for the collectors - and the flippers who sell it to the collectors later for twice the price.

I think the original idea was to promote local independent record shops but that was 20 years ago or something. I suppose it still does that in a way.

I went to a record fair this morning instead - no queues and some nice bargains.

Good luck to all the record stores and I hope they remain viable as long as possible. I’d be another one who would avoid shops at busiest times, so it’s never appealed to me directly.

I think it's an amazing idea, but, I don't support it. The cost is prohibitive, I refuse to pay the prices they ask and TBH most of the stuff dosen't interest me. I remember my favourite shop in Wakefield debating about the cost to buy the stock and it being a massive gamble with them not being able to get money back. I visit lots of record stores and always see old RSD releases sitting in the racks many months after the event. I'm glad that others have a nice day, but I'd sooner dig through a few crates of vinyl in a smelly old charity shop.

Most charity shops are pretty savvy these days when it comes to vinyl. They will look the going rate on the Internet and price accordingly.

The only bargains I've found amongst the James Last and Top of the Pops records, have been classical LPs by little known composers, which were worth taking a punt on.

Occasionally some good ones in decent condition still turn up at car boot sales, but mostly it's dealers peddling overpriced tat or private sellers who'd chucked them in the skip then two rainy days later changed their minds and tried to flog them.

I think record fairs are your best chance for decent used vinyl at good prices, but if I went too often I'd just be looking at the same stuff by the same sellers. So maybe once every six months is enough.

The only decent vinyl I have ever bought at a boot sale have been some classical music records being sold by a private seller who had bought them as part of their music studies. They were in excellent condition; both sleeve and record, and I bought the lot. But those events are very, very rare.

Those professional sellers who specialise in house clearance, offer the most amazing amount of junk vinyl which are simply dumped on the ground.

Genuine vinyl sellers display their wares professionally, and the vinyl is usually in good condition. They are also pretty knowlegable (often having a copy of the record buyers' guide in their car!), and because of that will charge the full whack for their vinyl.

At the end of the day, everyone is trying to make the most money for either charity or personal gain. I suppose it all boils down to what you think works as a bargain in monetry terms.

I'm not a fan for various reasons but won't drone on except to say that the records that are released on RSD very rarely excite me - re-releases, coloured vinyl, live material that I've heard before... There's scarcely anything that I would want to buy on the list.

I happily support my favourite record stores for the rest of the year whether RSD exists or not.
