I read some good reviews on these, so took the plunge and bought a used item. There is no new stock available here in the UK and the tariffs are going to kill Schiit with their made in China, assembled in USA manufacturing model. So I was keen to acquire one before they become hard to find, it took a few months, but one turned up.
This analogue EQ unit is good, very good, way better than I could have hoped for.
I bought it purely to boost bass content, it has six adjustable filter frequencies, one centred at 20Hz, with a max of +/- 12dB adjustment. So it ramps up the bass, with an increasingly steep slope, from around 200Hz to 20Hz then falls off below this frequency at an equal slope. It adds little till around 50Hz and counters the usual gradual roll off in bass from this frequency down.
It's so quite and has zero effect on the rest of the spectrum, so on normal tracks, without any deep bass, I questioned whether it was switched on, I literally couldn't tell when switching it in/out using its bypass switch.
I put my go-to bass track on, Peter Gabriel's So album, track, That Voice Again. There is a bass note that drops through the floor. My Canton CT-1000/II (sealed 12" bass) could just pick it up, but with the Lokius it's there with gusto. It does exactly what I wanted and I can't find a down side.
Schiit produce three EQ models:
Loki Mini+ $149 only RCA in/out
Lokius $299 RCA and XLR Balanced in/out
Loki Max $1499 RCA and XLR Balanced in/out
The two cheaper variants use a wall wart supply, the Max has a built in PSU.
I read somewhere that the Lokius was the one to go for, as it's external wall wart performed better than the internal supply on the max unit, when it came to measured noise at the outputs. These units, according to Schiit, can be prone to picking up interference, so careful location may be required to avoid noise. Maybe the internal power supply is generating self noise which is being picked up and the remote wall wart is better in this regard?
I can certainly confirm that the Lokius is as quite as the grave, in my purely bass application.
It's inserted between my Pass Labs Pre and Neurochrome 686 Monoblocks using balanced connections.
So if your considering one of these EQ units, save yourself a grand and buy the Lokius model.
