Sometimes at work they would put on Capitol Radio which plays current popular music which is almost all diabolically bad and sometimes offensively bad.

I mean the sort of stuff anyone with even zero talent or musical ability could make in a few hours if you gave them the equipment and a crash course in how to use it.

My definition of art has always been 'If I could do it, then it isn't art.'

I'm probably one of the few here that listens to quite a lot of modern pop, Tate McRae, Chappel Roan, Alex Warren, Gracie Abrams, The Weeknd, Dasha, Teddy Swims, Sabrina Carpenter etc. etc. :sofa:

So I went on Youtube and picked the first tune up for each artist.

Tate McRae 'Sports Car' - good, distinctive voice, good legs. Not objectionable at all, a bit bland, lacks a hook, but otherwise it's okay.

Chappel Roan 'The Giver' - derivative, nothing special about her voice. Weak hook but at least it has one. Not objectionable but not grabbing me.

Alex Warren 'Ordinary' - As soon as this started I knew I was going to hate it. Don't like his voice or delivery, weak hook, derivative. Couldn't get all the way through.

Gracie Abrams 'That's So True' - Like a not as good Avril Lavigne. Looks like Keanu Reeves twin sister. Not objectionable but bland - not doing anything for me.

The Weeknd - 'Timeless' - One of those where you keep skipping forward a bit to see if it ever gets going - and it doesn't.

Dasha - 'Austin' - Seems to be pretty much the same tune as the Chappel Roan song with different lyrics. No hook, nothing outstanding to me.

Teddy Swims - 'The Door' - Like his voice but song is bland and derivative, with a weak hook.

Not doing very well so far - no-one here I'd sign on the strength of what I've heard. So on to the last one...

Sabrina Carpenter - 'Espresso' - Like her voice and this at least has a good dance beat to it that had my foot tapping. Best of the bunch but still, 'Don't give up your day job love.'

Agreed - I got bored with it after 10 seconds, and it didn't improve once it kicked in. I tried not looking at video but that made no difference. A truly awful track.

I have only heard of 2 of the above acts, most current pop all sounds the same to me, and too be honest I don’t listen to any radio stations that will be playing their tunes although the wife does have Clyde 1 if I’m in her car.

Martin, just to be clear won’t be searching on YouTube for any of those “artists”, I did however stream the Taylor Swift show last year, out of curiosity.

I have I would like to think a fairly broad taste in music but the current chart stuff is not for me.

That being said, I will not criticise anyone’s choice in music .

Also currently there is a thread on PFM about soul music , where there has been some real sh**te being written about what is or what isn’t soul music, staying clear of that in order not to be banned.

Ugh, that's horrible, there's been a huge trend in pop music since that bloody wots 'er name wot did that New York song, full of warbling heartfelt emotion, hate it. I also can't stand maudlin music, makes me vomit.

That ed sheeran guys makes my ears bleed, all the rest I don't know the names of, because I have absolutely no interest in it, why would I? I don't mind a bit of modern pop and to be fair some K-Pop is very well executed. But I miss the art of yesteryear's single, with its instrumental intro hook, middle eight and instrumental break all seeming to be dispensible these days. Spotify discourages artists from having an instrumental intro (see how many modern pop tracks dive straight into the vocal) because many people only check the first few seconds of a song and then scroll onward. What if there was no piano at the start of Imagine, no guitar at the start of Smells Like Teen Spirit, no atmospherics at the start of Vienna...

A year or two back I spent a while trying to get into Taylor Swift's Midnights because it was being so highly acclaimed. No matter how much I tried to see something in it I found it really thin and flimsy, very little going on beyond some breathy vocals and beats. They say she writes great bridges but she doesn't seem to do much instrumentally.

The Ed Sheeran track Azizam which I mentioned earlier in the thread pulls off another trick to do exactly this - 6 seconds of jangly guitar and then he starts singing the chorus of the song, so the listener is immediately presented with the catchiest part of the record before the verse.

There was a trend in the 1960s to open the song with the chorus (Beatles, et al) which is taking the commercial aspect to the extreme. But I suppose they have to eat like the rest of us.
