Hello Guys,

I am László from Hungary and I just joined this forum. I live in Budapest and I love DIY and vintage stuff. I just bought a Thorens TD-124/II for a bargain and started to restore it. It came with a SME 3009 II tonearm, but no headshell and the bias and rider weight is also missing. After reading through many articles I decided to go with Denon DL-103R pickup but I am open for any suggestions.

If anyone could help me to source the weights for the SME tonearm for a good price, I would be very grateful.
As for the MC step-up transformer, first I was thinking about a vintage Siemens T41 because I would not be able to buy an A23 (too expensive for my purse) but I was very happy to see a topic about Haufe transformer so I am going to buy those.
Although I am situated in Hungary, I have a very good friend in Germany so I can help to source some of these transformers for you.

I asked them but I received an answer that they do not sell weights for 3009 II any more. There is non company selling in Canada (kraudioproducts) but for some reason they are not answering my e-mail :-(
I would like to order more parts for my tonearm and I asked what would be the combined shipping fee and if they could give some discount on the final amount but I never received an answer :-(

Do you have access to eBay? Parts for the SME 3009 arms are readily available there - but I would approach SME first, as the eBay vendors are opportunist, mercenary and expensive. The Haufe transformers work very well with the Denon (it's what are used in the A23 unit), and the Denon/SME combination works well on a Thorens 124/II turntable - I use this combination myself.

What is the rest of your system - amplifier and speakers? And, of course, what sort of music do you like to listen to?

I have a Kondo M7 Phono clone built with Shinkoh resistors in the line stage and Takman in the phono (later I plan to change them to Shinkoh as well) and Toichi paper in oil capacitors. For a power amp I use a 47Labs Gaincard clone. This improved circuit clone has been designed by my friend (Dragan Pastonjicki). I use DIY loudspeaker and RCA cables and currently I use a very rare Philips AD loudspeaker which consists of 1 Philips AD9710 AlNiCo speaker each. I am now in the process of building a CheapTrick CT-230 loudspeakers which use Visaton speakers.
Mostly I listen to classical and jazz music plus music from '60s, '70s and '80s as well as some kids music (I have 2 kids and they also like to listen to good music).

Unfortunately SME informed me that they do not sell rider nor bias weight for the SME 3009 series 2 any more :-(, so I have to order it from the web (ebay). As I mentioned in my upper post, kraudioproducts.com sells them and I sent them an e-mail asking about combined shipping cost and a possible discount from the final price because I am ordering 5 parts with total amount of USD 120.00

I almost forgot to mention that I am also listening to CD on a modified Micromeg Minium CD player and sometimes on a Sony CDO-227ESD which is now waiting to be modified as I did with my Micromega (based on www.lampizator.eu descriptions). TUbe output has been added to my Micromega but from the Sony the oversampling will also be removed.

I'm not really the man to help with an arm rewire as i have never done it in my life ;) If you want to fix a blown solid state amp then i'll certainly lend a hand, just don't ask about valves as i have never been there either :eyebrows:

Yes, it's a very friendly community, like nothing else i have come accross on the web :) Take it from me that there is bound to be at least one & more than likely a few people that will be only too happy to give you some advice :cool:

I'd suggest you go to the relevant forum section & do a search as you might find the relevant information already on here, if not then start a new thread.

Are you thinking of replacing the leads to your pre-amp, or are you considering replacing the internal wiring of the arm?

If the former, then I would recommend using two individual coaxial cables, rather than an overall screened 4-conductor cable.

For the replacment of the the internal wiring, I would contact the guys at Audio Origami in the UK for their advice. They can be found at www.audioorigami.co.uk

Thanks a LOT!!!! I did not find these listings earlier. I'll try to contact him but I would really appreciate if you could ask him if he has the following parts:

- bias weight
- rider weight
- rubber bed plate grommets

All these would be needed for SME 3009 series 2

There are several vendors on eBay offering for auction spare parts for early SME arms. If you want to go through the hassle of bidding, with all that entails, so be it. I think it would be a lot better, and fairer, if they were to offer these items with a 'Buy it Now' option at a reasonable price.
