Help Indentifying Shure Cartridge

Is anyone able to help identify this Shure Cartridge?. It says Shure Made in the USA on the top of the cartridge and made in USA next to the pins. The logo is gold.

It sounds pretty good but I have no idea how old the stylus is so was going to look at replacements.

Possibly an M55E

Thanks Macca, I've done a google and the images generally show M55E below the logo but there are probably variations. I've seen some images of the HW-1 (N75) which look similar although the photos I've looked at have Shure HW-1 written on the bottom. If I remove the stylus, above the hole for the stylus I can see very faintly the bottom half of what looks like two numbers, probably 01.

I will do some more googling of the M55.

It's rare to see a Shure without the model's alpha numeric on the front.

Looking further seems M55 has a plastic body but your pic shows metal. I have only ever owned an M75ED personally.

I have a couple of M55E cartridges. Both of them have 'M55E' marked on a cream-coloured stylus carrier, and neither of them have flip down stylus guard.

I think it is more likely to be one of the M75 range.

I'm now a bit uncertain: looking at M75 s for sale on Ebay, all have the model number marked on the cartridge body in place of the Shure logo that yours has.

Barry, thank you for thr reply. This one has just the logo, but it has writing on the bottom, doesn't have the ribs in front of the screw guides or the stylus guard.

In that case I'll stick with M55 - Styli for them don't seem to be expensive, I'd give it go.

Thank you all for the feedback. I continued googling and my best guess is that it is a Shure Premier Black which seems is the same as an M75Ed Type 2. The ones I have seen on ebay seem the same but have either writing or a label on the bottom of the cartridge but maybe this was removed.

I've ordered a cheap Tonar spherical stylus to try and if it works well may try an eliptical stylus.

Well done Sean! Certainly the body shape of your cartridge looked like one of the 75 family. Like Martin, I have had only a brief acquaintance with an M75ED, but don't remember if it had the model number marked on the front.

We are used to the M44; M55; M75; M91; M93; M95; M97 series, etc., but Shure made a lot more cartridge types. Some of these were for professional users such as broadcasting studios, some for record pressing plant quality control departments, and even some for record autochangers; supplied on an OEM.

Good luck with the stylus replacement. I think I might have used the same company to supply me with stylii for my ADC cartridges.
