Getting back into DVD - now which player!

Tired of not being able to find films because of licensing laws by country, and of course modern day censorship, why for instance cannot I find Peckngpahs 'Straw dogs' to watch on any of the video channels? Or that Jean pierre Melville film I love 'Un Flic'. I've had enough and I',m going back to hard copy, shame I chucked all those vids and dvds years ago though, ah well!
So need a decent DVD player, preferably cheap cos I'm broke, used I guess these days!!
Suggestions please.

I’d look for an Oppo 105D or 103D. Mine are both still doing sterling work up to and including BluRay, although I don’t think they do the very latest resolutions. Even the Oppo 90s models are worth a look. And they do SACD if that’s yer bag.

If you are broke there are players around £35 with HD these days. I bought one and am very pleased with it.

Alas you should have posted a couple of months ago, before I threw out a perfectly good and working Toshiba region-free DVD player. I had no use for it, and knew of no-one who would want it.

Had a few Pioneer players back in the day I chose for their picture and sound quality.
Best of the bunch was the DV-575-A. Best picture and the sound was really something compared to other players I'd tried.
CD playback was fantastic, ran it as a CD Transport for a while.
Also is a SACD player.

One on Ebay just now, good condition boxed with remote, well looked after for 50 Notes.

I have a 565-A still going after more than 20 years (not sure why it would ever need any updates?).

Good picture quality, better than the first generation Denon player it replaced (which is also still running in a mate's system as his CD player, 26 years of flawless operation).

Hopefully not hijacking the thread too much, Mike - but Gaz/Martin, if you used say the Pioneer DV-575-A as a CD Player/SACD player, can you do so without it being connected to a TV? i.e., does it show the tracks etc. on the machine display? (My Marantz SACD player has decided it doesn't want to play SACD's, and as I only have about 20 of them, I don't want to spend a fortune to replace it.)

If there are L, R audio output RCA sockets, then that is all you need. The display will tell you the track number and the time elapsed, but may not display the title of the track being played.

The 565A does show the tracks on the display.

Are your SACDs not hybrids then? All of mine are.

So, there’s a little used full width but very light Panasonic DMP-BD77 with remote and LAN connection. BD Live, DIVX HD, DOLBY TrueHD, Dts-HD. NB no digital out but you can buy an HDMI sound splitter for a tenner if that’s an issue. There are analogue stereo RCA sockets, though. Comes with remote.

Alternatively there’s a small 1/3ish width Sony BDP-S1700 BluRay player. It’s Italian market but I think it has its menus in English. Dts, DOLBY TrueHD, gracenote. It has a digital out (RCA) and a LAN connection. Again, I have the remote. It also has the paperwork. What I need to find is the 12v power supply which I seem to have misplaced. I have used this unit to feed my Meridian DSP speakers and it sounded quite ok as a transport.

Happy to supply either for the cost of the postage, which wouldn’t be much.

I’m away until after this weekend but should be able to send something over next week if you’re interested.

Thanks to Peter I now have a DVD/Blu ray player. I have connected it via LAN cable to one of the ethernet ports on my router, but cannot see it on the TV. Must I also connect the router to the TV to get the ethernet connection? I though it would pick it up wirelessly as I connected the DVD to the router.

^This. The LAN connection will allow you to access various apps and maybe (I cannot recall precisely but the manual might say) DNLA/UPnP machines such as a NAS.

If you need a digital stream to feed a DAC, and it doesn’t have a digital out RCA or optical, which ISTR it doesn’t, it will need a cheap HDMI to PCM digital splitter inserted into the path between the HDMI out of the unit and the TV.

Nope! Perhaps a photo would better describe my predicament.

Tried connecting via HDMI but there's not really enough room between TV and wall, and it bends sharply, so I'm now thinking to buy long LAN cable and connect TV to router and that will work, as DVD is connected to router also.

I'm not after any enhanced audio on the DVD player thanks, just want normal playback using TVs sound.
