Happy New Year everyone!

2025 is starting dull, cloudy and windy here, but not too cold at 11C.

Dull here too. 6C. Forecast says it's sunny with rain showers. Neither is true.

Hard to believe there's still two months of winter left to do. Already seems to have gone on forever.

Happy New Year, a bit colder this morning 3c with rain of course

Happy New Year! We had a good old battering with winds up to 50mph and heavy rain but looks to be easing off on both just now. 9c but set to get colder, down to -4c tomorrow night but no rain for the next couple of days but then wintry showers over the weekend. Still, on the positive side, the days are slowly getting longer as we edge through winter.

Macca

Over the next week sunset gets later in the evenings by 1 minute a day!

For some reason I don't really understand, sunrise only gets 1 minute earlier over the same period.

Well it has really. 2024, we didn't have any Spring, Summer or Autumn, it's been just one long, dark, cold, wet year.

Wasn't so bad here, second half of summer was pretty decent and September was warm.

There's been some years since I lived here where summer never got warm at all.

Yep, that's about it and worse to come if the forecast is correct for the rest of the week. Just more of 2024.

Wall to wall blue skies here and sunny, and more frost than any day of the winter so far. But I prefer this to the relentless gloom we've had for the last 3 months.

Gets a bit warmer from Sunday but with the return of the gloom and gale force winds.

That's the problem with leaving a car outside; it always amases me that those with garages don't use them, preferring to leave them on the drive, or worse on the road.

If you were to build a garage from scratch, and weren't limited by space you could make it big enough for modern cars and have room to spare for other stuff. But most people will be stuck with what they have. Even if we had somewhere else to store the camping stuff, kids' bikes, chest freezer and three motorbikes, the garage would still be a tight squeeze for the Volvo.

I'd love a big garage - I could make it into a listening room, and the car would still have to live on the drive :D

One of my customers had a garage built a couple of years ago to house his Rover P4, Jag Mk. 10 and two vintage Bentleys, but that's a world I won't be living in just yet.

Pigmy Pony
03-01-2025, 08:35
Last night was frosty with a starry sky, and the gritters came past the house at teatime. But this morning there's no frost, just a lot of cloud. Chilly though.

Yeah we have all that stuff too, we just need to get round to doing a car boot. It's been four years now

Barry
03-01-2025, 11:48
You need to be quite firm regarding car boot sale 'paraphernalia'. Admittedly, there is some of that stuff in the garage, but the majority is gardening tools, tins of paint and other DIY gear. But I can still house the car in there, without difficulty.

Ironically we put up a garden shed for all her boot sale stuff, but SWMBO wants a larger shed, yet talks about running down the boot sale activity.

Do you have a tennis ball hanging on a piece of string to tell you when to stop reversing? And a piece of carpet nailed to the wall to save your door when opening? You have an Audi A1 don't you, I imagine they come with parking sensors. Our car has them, but my van has a camera which doesn't stop me reversing into stuff, including her son's van making a right old mess

Barry
03-01-2025, 13:13
Never reverse into my garage: it would fill it with exhaust fumes. I do have an old washing line hanging from the ceiling, notted at the end, which when it touches the bonnet I have about 4" to spare.

Yes I do have a piece of thick foam rubber attached to the wall so as to prevent my banging it when I open the door to get out.

My old car (a Rover 416Si) had none of the parking facilities that my Audi has, yet I was able to easily park it in the garage.
With the Audi I have to retract the mirrors and use the proximity sensors to help give me a visual sense of clearance. Yet for all intents the Audi is the smaller car. :hmm:

1C and dull. Heavy snow forecast for tonight. Kick off at 1900.

Macca
04-01-2025, 17:12
Only 2 hours to snow time! Supposed to go on for nine hours, then sleet, and then rain.

So it should all get washed away by morning. Still, not taking any chances, been to supermarket a day early just in case. Wasn't too bad for a Saturday.

Barry
04-01-2025, 20:59
2 - 3C. Cold, but no sign as yet of the snow expected. Did some shopping and have enough food for the next ten days.

Put the car in the garage, so it won't get iced up.

Macca
04-01-2025, 21:11
we had a bit of sleet earlier that's left a sheen over everything, but so far no snow.

Pigmy Pony
04-01-2025, 23:38
Snow's been coming down for an hour or so, but it's pretty fine stuff, like frozen drizzle. Everything white, but might be gone come morning.

Macca
05-01-2025, 08:04
we've had a dusting here but that's all. So much for the 9 hours of 'heavy snow' they forecast.

Maybe it's worse on the high ground or out in the bushes.

Pigmy Pony
05-01-2025, 08:36
We've got about 4" of snow here, and it's still snowing a bit. We were worried about the cat, who'd never seen snow like it. She flatly refused to go out, but after a couple of hours she probably had the 'turtle's head' peeping out and she finally went for it, my brave little soldier. I expect I'll find a turd under the car later, but rather that than a hidden corner of the house.

Barry
05-01-2025, 08:56
It snowed overnight sometime between midnight and 02:00. However it is now 5C and raining so most of the snow has gone.

My cat was totally unphased by the weather. Rain, snow, wind, bitter cold, he wasn't bothered. I'd see him sat happily on the wall outside with the rain pouring down on him.

He'd come in looking like he'd been swimming and about a minute later he'd be bone dry. I was never sure how that was even possible.

Rain due to start at 1000 as the temp goes up. Supposed to be 6C by 1900.

Tomorrow is rain and sleet all day. Lovely!

05-01-2025, 10:12
We weren’t forecast to have snow but when I went to bed at 1am it was quite heavy. There’s some left but most gone with rain we now have, and temperature supposed to clime steadily to about 11c before slowly dropping again tomorrow before 12 days of cold daytime, overnight frosts but sunny spells and no precipitation.

05-01-2025, 10:54

Pigmy Pony
05-01-2025, 11:49
No rain here either, but temperature has climbed a bit and slabs of snow are falling off the cars and van. I might venture out in a bit, there's errands I can't put off any longer.

There may be a big blob of snow on the satellite dish, cos the telly's saying no satellite signal being received, just stuff on the planner. I'm not going out there to clear the dish though, because there's only shite on the box anyway.

Macca
05-01-2025, 12:20

Those old Sky dishes where when it rained you got little golden sparkles all over the picture.

First time I ever watched Sky they were showing repeats of 'T.J Hooker'. That was 1991. Still showing them now.

Pigmy Pony

Half of yesterday's snow melted away, but another 2" has been added overnight as evidenced by the car's roof. I have to drive over to Blackburn in half an hour, they always get it worse than us.

woke up to a shedload of snow this morning. I could tell soon as I opened my eyes as the room was brighter than usual.

Walking to work was like re-enacting a scene from 'Scott Of The Antarctic'.

All melted now except for a few patches on the grass and in corners.

More forecast for tomorrow but I've got the day off so it can do what it likes.

Shit day today. Sunny, tools out on drive, then suddenly comedy snow (like little polystyrene balls), tools chucked into porch, snow stops and sun comes out, tools back out onto the drive, rinse and repeat. Made a four hour job into a six hour one.

That's enough work for now, I'm doing bugger all till Friday, hopefully things will be better by then.

Macca
07-01-2025, 21:16
we had the same - sleet, sun, sleet, sun.

Going to be minus four tonight and barely a breeze so tomorrow will be icy as still a lot of water about.

The Krell 50S only gets slightly warm as it has plateau biasing so it isn't at full power all the time like typical class A. So it doesn't help. For that I'd need to switch in my old school KSA100 which is a 650 watt fan heater as well as a 100WPC amplifier :)

Speaker voice coils will get cold, might affect the sound a little until they warm through with use. Maybe ten minutes or so.

Barry
11-01-2025, 09:49
In some ways my speakers (the original Quad electrostatics) sound better in a cold environment, but such an environment does not suit the listener.

Class A amplifiers can help, but I abandoned my 25W Mark Levinson ML-2 monoblocks, since their constant dissipation of 200W was just too much in the summer.

Barry

Yes, most pickup cartridge benefit from working in a warm enviroment: 25C seems to be optimal, but YMMV.

with a 2KW fan heater running for a couple of hours now I've nearly got the living room up to 12C

Got a 3.5KW space heater upstairs but you're not really supposed to use that on domestic supply. If you run it too long the plug starts welding itself to the socket.

Can't really listen to music with a fan heater running. Do have a 2.5 KW convection heater which is silent so I'll switch over to that once I get some more heat in the room. Layabout neighbours not out of bed yet so can't really play any music right now anyway.

Kitchen is 6C although earlier it was 4C but I think that increase is due to heat bleeding through from the neighbour's kitchen which has fancy things like insulation and radiators. But the wall between us is only about an inch thick.

Been out to the supermarket, still load of ice about despite sunshine all day it just isn't shifting. 5C predicted for tomorrow afternoon, with the sun out as well that might just clear it.

That would account for it. I bought a Class D amp that was being heavily promoted here on AoS, only to find the moulded-on 13A three pin plug to fit the UK's 13A sockets did not have a fuse. I of course cut it off and fitted a proper 13A plug.

I didn't get out on my planned walk today, due to the incessant heavy drizzle. That was the reason. I did however walk to the Asda to buy some flowers. By which I mean I walked from the car park to where the flowers were, which unhelpfully weren't near the entrance.

If you're not going to walk due to drizzle that's going to rule out about 150 walking days a year.

This is depressing the heck out of me. Wake up, put on the lights and try not to put on the heating till the afternoon. Day after day it's dark, cold and damp. You're supposed to be getting the brunt of it then?

We have wind up to 53 MPH forecast which is almost a 10 on the Beaufort Scale, meaning it's officially a 'Storm.'

However in the last one they forecast wind up to 45 mph here and I looked back at what it actually was and it never got above the low 30s. Since that 1987 thing I think they always go for the worst case prediction.

Today is bin day. Almost everyone's bins had blown over and the street looked like a landfill site. I'd wedged ours against the holly bush, so we were ok. Still didn't keep me from clearing neighbours' plastic bottles and cereal boxes from under the van and car this morning.

According to BBC Weather, wind speeds where I was working peaked at 58mph. We made a bonfire with a load of cardboard boxes from a kitchen delivery. Probably not a good idea, it looked like Los Angeles in miniature.
