View Full Version : Adverts are making AoS unuseable
I understand the need to finance the site, but adverts are making it unusable on my phone, to a point where I am close to giving up on AoS.
Half the screen is blocked by adverts, so functionality is much reduced.

If you donate, the ads go away.

Never see ads here, not on laptop anyway, I donated once or twice ages ago.
Yes, just make a donation (of, say £10) and the ads will disappear for you.
To make a donation click on "Contribute" at the top of the page and follow the steps there.

Same here. I do get ads initially, then I log on and they go away.
If you have/had made a contribution but only look at the Forum without logging on, then you will see the ads. Once you login they disappear.

Yes. Going off-topic for a minute Barry, I noticed your absence this last couple of weeks - been anywhere nice? :)

No, just been very busy with other things. But I shall be spending Christmas in North Wales, and very much hope to see Marco and Del whilst I'm there. Fingers crossed.

Please pass on my best wishes Barry, if you see them, do miss him even though he supports that green mob in the east end of Glasgow

I hope you do meet up with them. Please wish him well from me.
Who is this Marco chap you speak of?
I hope he has fully recovered.

He hasn't yet, regrettably, which is why he's still not around.

Bloody hell, that’s awful
So the forum is practically unusable unless you donate? Hmmmmm.

Great to know the Gaffer is still about and kicking.
Happy bout 'dat.

Yes that is the way it is. It wasn't always that way, but several years ago Marco decided the revenue earnt from permitting advertising would help with the Forum running costs.
I agree the presence of the adverts makes the Forum ugly to look at and very difficult to use.
If you want to contribute you know what to do. It need not cost much. How much you contribute reflects how important participation in AoS is to you.
So I’ve now bitten the bullet and made a contribution, logged out and logged back in but it’s made no difference. What happens next?
Give it some time for processing. I don't know how long it will take, it might be that being the Forum owner, Marco himself needs to be involved.
Regardless of the payment method, you ought to be able to see if the payment has gone through.
If nothing has happened by tomorrow, I'll speak to someone who might be able to help.

That really is pretty shitty news. :wowzer:
I asked about adverts, as on my tablet and PC it is fine, but on my phone, it is unusable.
Adverts help run the forum, and I click on the occasional one from time to time.

I find navigating and reading forums on a phone very hard so I rarely bother. If I'm away a few days I just leave it, then there's a bit to catch up on when I'm back.
Personally I'd get rid of the ads, they've reduced traffic to the forum and I doubt they bring in much revenue. But that is all out of my hands.

PM sent Shane..
So does a contribution stop the adverts?
So does a contribution stop the adverts?
It would do if Marco was still active.
So does a contribution stop the adverts?
No.
I've said this before obviously........
Adverts don't show if you use Tapatalk and it's also makes adding photos a dawdle too.
setting windows firewall to strict seems to stop them too - although might not be relevant if using a phone.

Using FireFox browser in private mode may help, You can also try Adblocker or Ghostry as a browser add-on, all for free.

What about Duck Duck Go or whatever it's called? I use Tapatalk anyway and pay a nominal amount each month which is useful for photo hosting if nothing else.
