Why don't we have shops like that here?

We used to have discount stores such as Comet and Laskys in the late '60s, but they vanished long ago. Today we have "audio salons" which cater for customers on a one-to-one basis and are by appointment only.

There was a lot of interesting gear at that Russian store, the cameraman seemed to be attracted to the Revox brand, and I have to admit there was a range of Revox separates with beautiful simple Yamaha-like fascias which I had not seen before.

Otherwise there was a lot of tat: mini-systems; ghetto blasters, record autochanger and the like - but whatever it was, it all looked to be brand new.

So, an interesting 50 minutes distraction whilst waiting for my flight.

It reminded me of the original Richer Sounds stores, just larger.

Probably good for my bank balance that we don't have anywhere like that in this country.

He says in the video that most of the equipment came from Germany. They just got in a van and drove it there from Moscow.

Reminds me of Tottenham Court Road late '70s/early '80s, there was a string of shops with shelves like these, all rammed with brushed aluminium Japanese kit. I was mesmerised. Thanks for posting.

I remember it well from the late 1980s and thinking 'When I've got some money, I'll be back.'

My local hifi shop went bust while waiting for me to be back with some money :( It's a Superdrug last time I looked.

I did buy one of these from them though. An outgoing model reduced from £160 to £80. I went in every Friday with £10 of my wages, and finally took it away when he got my last instalment. Longest eight weeks of my life.

Unfortunately not.

This is the amp I threw up on after a night on the town. The vents on top did a good job of holding back the chunks, but not the liquid. It was a couple of weeks before I got up the courage to turn it back on. Worked fine, though there was a bit of a smell as it warmed up, somewhere between a hospital ward and a Chinese chippy.

I sold it a few years later to a mate from work for £30 and put that towards a new Cyrus 1, which if I'm honest didn't give me an obvious sound improvement. I never told my mate about the vomit.
