It's trying to be sunny, oh wait the sun's just come out. I'll give it half an hour then I'll go out there with me posh coffee and admire my lawn 'stripes' :)

Clouds but intermittent sun, supposed to be more sunny this afternoon and about 16c. Similar expected tomorrow but dizzy heights of 19c. Lawn mowing and BBQ day, then.

Hopefully I have repaired the leak in my pool liner, as I want to get back to swimming again soon.

I don't have a pool either :( I do have a pot hole in the road outside the house, that fills up quite a bit.

Forecast says no rain today although I don't really trust it.

Might take a chance and go record shopping, just to get out the house. After second breakfast ofc.

Bit of a last minute thing as the weather is ok... off to the Westmorland Show Country fest to look at sheep racing or kite flying or something.

There's an 'Egg and Rabbit Show' according to the blurb. I really can't begin to imagine what that entails.

Also there's a 'Ferret Show' which alone has to be worth the price of admission. I assume it's the animals on show rather than former German prisoner of war camp guards doing a turn.

I'd guess you're not going to see these things anywhere else on the planet.

Just been hanging washing out and it’s a bit parky when the sun is behind the clouds. Now taking the dog for a walk, and even though it is now no longer illegal, no clouts will be cast today.

Barry

What is 'clout casting'?

Alex_UK
01-06-2024, 12:44
What is 'clout casting'?

It was a play on the expression “Ne’er cast a clout till May is out” - I.e. always wear a coat until June arrives. But even though it’s June, I still wore a jacket walking the dog.

Got to the next town over and back without it raining on me, but it did seem to be threatening it so cut it short a bit (No third brekkie in Maccie D's this time).

Ah yes - I had forgotten the expression. They may sound quaint but we're the result of centuries of experience.

What is 'clout casting'?

'Clout' is an ancient word meaning literally, cloth. In this context it is saying don't discard any clothing until May is finished.

My archery club has an annual "clout shoot", where competitors try to get as close as they can get to a cloth (more likely a flag) staked to the ground from a distance of 180 yards for men, 140 yards for women.

Ashton and Ingol.
Preston was an interesting town, in many ways.

I used to live in Ashton (Stocks Road), my dad still lives in Ingol, which isn't as rough as it used to be. Most of the scumbags are over at Greenlands and Callan estates these days.

Yeah, I missed all that, we just got there too late, not enough time to get round everything. But there were the giant tortoises, there's nothing in life that can't be improved with a giant tortoise :)

Also a shitload of weird-looking sheep (who knew there were so many different makes of sheep?), some classic cars and bikes, and a band who did Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" so bad I felt sorry for them.

Still, it was only £13 to get in, so I'd go again but get there earlier. Great Yorkshire show next month, that bugger is 35 quid each, but they have birds of prey, so I'll still end up going. Mrs. P prefers being round barnyard animals, so we're both catered for :)

I was the other side of Tom Benson way, on Waterloo road.
The first night I was in Ingol, someone set fire to a car on a road I could see from my window. I wondered what I was doing there, but in the two years I was there, I never had any problems. Dalmore road rings a bell..

Like with cars and hi-fi, there's probably a lot of fairly new Chinese brands we've never heard of.

Possibly a degree lower here, but indeed, a beautiful day with lots of sun. My perfect weather, any more than about 21 is too hot for me, and I prefer some cloud break so you’re not constantly in the sun. Grass cut, couple of other jobs to do then BBQ and relax.

Met Office long range forecast:

Signals are inconclusive regarding prevailing weather patterns during this period. Typical conditions for the UK are most probable, with a mixture of weather types. All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather, but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures are most likely to be close to, or above, climatological average.

It might, if you're lucky, be sunny occasionally. It will rain, probably a lot, and it's not going to be very warm. Don't kid yourselves...

This non-summer is getting me down, so in a couple of weeks we're bogging off to South of France. Driving, because I can't be doing with airports and planes. Anyway, I want to visit "Les Loups du Gevaudan", which we've passed several times but never got round to visiting.

sounds okay in the south but up here we've had some of that fine rain that soaks you through, and a few half hearted sunny spells.

Plenty of strength in the sun when it does break through but you only get about a minute then its back in again. Not been over 12C all day.

Looking at Thursday before it picks up.

Whereabouts in the West of Scotland are you Robin? I know Dumfries and Galloway is known as the "Scottish Riviera", though I thought it was just further north (Plockton, Kyle of Lochalsh etc.) that was affected by the Gulf Stream.

We are in Greenock, which is about 25 miles down the river Clyde from Glasgow, Plockton etc is much further north form us a good 3-4 hour drive , Scotland has several areas which have micro climates, ours is mainly rain.

Dragonflies need water to lay their eggs in, and shiny surfaces that may polarise light like cars and solar panels are often mistaken. Goes without saying that this is not good for maintaining dragonfly numbers. Perhaps if you were to stop polishing the car you could be doing your bit for the planet. This is an excuse I'll be using :) They are such extraordinary animals, and immensely talented in flight. Just read up on their 'motion camoflage', it is amazing!

Very warm and sunny in Preston today, too warm really to be doing groundwork for an outdoor play area at an opening-next-week nursery. And the only place to get a cold drink within walking distance was a cafe which thought it would be a good idea to not bother opening today  Fortunately the customer had a slab of bottled water with our name on it.

Still decided at 1pm that we'd done enough today. Got home to find Anita sweating her way through some heavy duty gardening, so now I feel a bit guilty about leaving her to it while I chat shit on here...

Looks like being another day too hot for me, 18C already. But I got finished on what I was doing a day early, so after returning the wacker plate I hired for the job, the day's my own :)

Edit: the day's my own? Who am I kidding? Anita's just dragged me away from the laptop to retrieve a suitcase from the loft, and the bloody thing dropped on my head, which is now bleeding like a good 'un. On the plus side the cap I was looking for yesterday has just turned up in the suitcase :) So now I don't have to frighten the good people of Montpelier with my battle-scarred head.

No I didn't! Got in there right after second breakfast.

Sadly what looked like CD towers from the back were actually just those corner things for putting nick nacks on.

The have got some amazingly good furniture in there though. There's a beautiful dining table and 4 chairs, totally mint, for £80. You could furnish a whole house out of that place, very tastefully, for under a grand.

Just spent the day watching classic car racing at Snetterton in Norfolk. Took a light tracksuit and a pack-a-mac - should have taken a proper coat as it lashed it down a couple of times in the morning and was freezing - about 15c but felt colder than that on the exposed circuit - I was actually shivering!

I know. I went round the supermarket about 1005 this morning and it was bitter! Had to zip up my jacket. Just no need for it this time of year.

Forecast says it will be blowing a gale all next week. It's worse where I work as it's right up on a hill and there's nothing between it and the Urals.
