I turned 69 in March this year so in my 70th year. I was thinking to myself that I don't feel old, don't act old and still love to try out new things. The body is not keeping up though!

I did too much running in my 20s/30s and had a problem with my L knee. I was advised to stop running and take up cycling so I have cycled regularly ever since. Had Covid in Oct 2020 and things have gone downhill since then. Joints got much more painful and now my L knee seems to be crumbling. Have had to give up 2 walking groups so am limitied to cycling which is also painful.

All things audio are still my top pastime and will always be.

Me, 53.
I am probably fitter now than I have been in the last 10 years, as I now run between 3 and 5Kms five times a week.
This is due to health reasons, as after catching Covid last year, I was later diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic.
The running helps me greatly reduce the medication I need to take daily.

Well that's something dodgy knees can't take away from you :)

I'm 66 now, born 1st January 1958 (first baby born in Preston that year). I've found in recent years that my energy levels desert me by the end of the day, but up till then I do just fine. When I look at my two oldest friends and see their health issues I consider myself very lucky, especially as I've really not done anything to deserve good health.

I've lately been looking over at the Bowland fells and thinking of having a go at some point this year. When I was younger I was all over them, and it would be interesting to see how I shape up 30 years on. If I don't embarrass myself I might post about it on here...

69 Dude...

Not me!
Just a childish Bill and Ted related relpy to your post Rob. :D
Which kinda sums me up even at 55, I'm still a big kid.

Never taken a tablet in my life, ran 10Ks n stuff, up till 2023 when a random TIA mini stroke reminded me the clocks always ticking.
Turned out I had scarring on my heart from a heart attack at some point in my past too... genuinely had no idea.

In hindsight put it down to uneccessary work stress, so I dont do that any more.
Historically always a stressed kinda person?

Dont do it kids..

Nowadays,
a course of tablets daily and a general "fuck stress and drama" atitude, and still the same childish wee Me.

77, and haven’t bought a record since 1984. Bought a couple of hundred CDs since, but since I copied them onto my music server, I can laze around listening or streaming and rest my aged legs.

Blimey I have heard about those sort of heart attacks! I was never stressed as a youngster or teenager, happy go lucky - come what may type and it was not until I got married :D. I have been on anti-depressants all my life and my wife thinks I am undiagnosed Bi-Polar:eek: but then I suppose she would:lol:

Cycling was my stress reliever and to clear my head but I have had to succumb to a 2nd hand e-bike as Covid put paid to my love of tackling all hills around here. Now it's the knee that is the problem but it doesn't stop me.

Too hot here for a balaclava ;)

A sweaty head is the price you pay for anonymity ;) I believe the French authorities have recently gotten tough on illegal use of these e-bikes, with 300 euro fines/2 year imprisonment

Over here they are increasingly becoming a menace, where they flout traffic laws just like they always did on pushbikes, only much faster. And the police can do bugger all about it - if a pursuit ends badly they're in a world of shit and these two-wheeled scumbags know it... I despair with today's youths, I died in two world wars to protect their freedom and this is the thanks I get :wheniwasaboy: If I were in charge I'd have more bobbies on the beat, armed with broom handles. The one I got 2nd hand came to me by chance and I took it home to try it for a few days. It is a Wisper 905 Torque with the larger capacity battery. There are 4 assitance levels and I have never gone above 2.....bcause there is a throttle that you can use if walking the bike up a hill or if you need extra assistance uphill it will take you up to 15 MPH as long as you are pedalling or on the flat. On the flat you only need to pedal gently and the throttle does the rest. There are probably ways of hacking the throttle:eyebrows:

I paid £500....new prices vary but an average of £1800.

The one I want does 45 km/h and is legal to use on the roads, so no need for a balaclava.

How old am I? Well since you ask the answer is 2.3485 109 seconds +/- 0.002%.

I'm a "baby boomer", and enjoyed all the advantages that came with it. Now I sit back in despair (and a certain sense of guilt) in seeing what a mess we have made to this country, the world and how difficult life is going to be for the "20 somethings".

Apologies for the depressing tone of this reply - blame it on the weather!

Not sure that figure is quite correct, Barry, but around 74 and a half?

I know what you mean - about how lucky previous generations have been, including myself. I was able to get a decent job leaving school at 16 and without getting a degree, got on the housing ladder in my early twenties and have a comfortable lifestyle from working hard.

I stress myself out about my kids and the struggles they are going to have, I will be able to help them to a certain amount, but others of their generation will not be so lucky. I try to instil a good work ethic and social responsibility but they are going to find it tough.

Now I’m depressed too, thanks!

I'd forgotten the term "Baby Boomer" but I am one:)

Only yesterday my wife (who keeps all sorts of crap from family on both sides dating back to the 1800s) found some postcards from the headmaster of my primary school ( Wixs Lane - Clapham Common) with merits for stuff that I did when I was tiny. That must have been my finest school moment/achievment!

Left Primary in 1966 and left secondary in 1972 with no qualifications. I was either doing things with the school choir or bunking off. Nobody cared whether you were there or not. The school choir was the best experience anyone could have had. Rated at the time as 2nd in the world.

Numerous Prom concerts at Royal Albert Hall. Sang in front of the queen in St Paul's Catherdral. Numerous Queen Elizabeth and Festival Hall concerts. Benjamin Britten wrote a work for us for the centenary of the Save The Children Fund which we performed at The Maltings, Snape (Suffolk) and visited his house. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Performed BBs Golden Vanity Opperetta for London Weekend Television and have a copy of the TV Times centre spread.

I think I will stop there before I bore people to death. Pt2 available if anyone interested.

Yes, and yes! Yes - around 74 and a half, and yes I sold myself short of 14 days.

The correct figure is 2.3469 109 seconds +/- 0.00184%.

Regarding my despair concerning the modern world, part of is due to learning in more detail about the history of the UK ("woke" and all that) and to realising how selfish and inconsiderate people have become; particularly post Covid, where many have become used to working from home

And why are drivers so inconsiderate these days, both on and off the road?

I can’t be doing barefoot on stoney surfaces, so have to wear something. I did buy a pair of flip flops once but it felt a bit weird and maybe dirty having something wedged between big and second toe - a bit like a G-string for your feet, so I stick to sliders!

When I become Supreme Ruler of the Universe the following will be outlawed -

For everyone:
1. People who wear baseball caps 'back to front', and wearing a baseball cap and a 'hoodie' with the hood up and over the cap
2. Crocks
3. Socks with sandles, or sliders
4. Random tattoos that look like graffiti on the arms and legs
5. Facial piercings, especially rings through the nose: unless you want to look like bull
6. Navel piercings if on display
7. Women who dye their hair bright blue, red, green, orange, purple etc.

and for any man over the age of 50:
8. Growing your hair long and wearing it in a pig tail or a ponytail, particularly if your hair is receding
9. Wearing T-shirts adorned with slogans.

Think that is enough to be going on with!

When I saw the Stones live in 1990, I couldn't believe how ancient they looked. Especially Keith, who looked like a wig-wearing skull atop a broken broom handle. Thing is, they would have had an average age of about 45, so we must look like proper fossils* to the kids of today.

*They probably have another word to describe us old farts, but we are so out of touch that word would mean nothing to us.

Women whio have adopted the Vocal Fry/Grinder style of ending words.
Facial enhacements as they say they want to show their individual style and end up all looking the same.
Men who can't grow old (dis) gracefully and as said before have hair too long (some only have patches left) and then dye it and look like cadavers as their skin tone has died/cheeks sunk/wrinkled like me . Just get it clipped (Grade 2 for me) and you will look years younger....well....maybe (note to self: Must update my "show Us What You Look Like Pic)

I am now 71 but feeling much younger as my personal outlook has changed for the better, as has my situation.

Health update for those remotely interested:
The PSA reading (prostate cancer) took a spike so I had a couple of scans and an in depth talk with the consultant.

Options for treatment are surgery or radiotherapy, my choice. Due to previous surgeries in the pelvic region surgery was deemed high risk so I have chosen radiotherapy.
However it is not a free ride, not that I was expecting it to be. Full treatment with the best outcome involves taking a hormone therapy course before the actual radiotherapy.

Joy of joys I will be going through a male menopause, yes that's right the hormone treatment is to lower the level of testosterone.
I could get sore breasts, breast enlargement, weight gain, loss of libido, hot flushes and I'm sure someone said a possible change to my voice.

I am looking at the whole thing with a positive outlook and will take everything as it comes with a 'devil may care' attitude.

For those of a certain age, get cheked, you too could possibly have a male menopause :lol::rfl:

Sorry to hear that Alan. I had a urine infection in Dec last year and had retention. By the time they had fitted the catheter I had not urinated for around 14 hours and they drained 1.5 litres off:eek: I was climbing the walls waiting to be seen. Doctor who dealt with it was superb though. I have had several blood tests and a digital feel of my prostate and it was slightly enlarged so they are keeping an eye on it. The PSA readings seem to be ok. Currently being monitored as my blood platelets are dropping with each blood test.

It's a great life if you don't weaken.

Putting a finger up the rectum so as to feel if the prostate gland has enlarged.

Hope all goes well Alan, and your positive attitude is to be admired.

I noticed around Christmas that was needing to get up for a wee more frequently in the night, and also that my “flow” had changed. Unusually for me I did actually go to the doctor and had the digit and PSA tests and I am ok (just ageing!) but I would encourage everyone to get tested if you notice any changes or indeed are of “a certain age.” My boss who is a year younger than me (54) has prostate cancer and is having his operated on next week. It is very common, and the good thing is if detected early enough the prognosis is very good.

Ah so it doesn't mean he uses a calculator then, that would be quite uncomfortable.

On one of my digital examinations the male doctor had a female trainee with him.
I was asked if it was OK for the trainee to do an examination, I could feel the difference :eyebrows:

A colleague at work had a digital examination, which was performed by a female doctor. According to him it was such a pleasant experience, he persuaded his fellow work colleague to have the same.

This time it was a male doctor, who was, shall we say, business like and abrupt, with the result that the experience was nowhere near as "good".

People over 70 shouldn't wear T-shirts - it's undignified! ;)

Balderdash!

I agree that if you've 'let yourself go' they are probably the least flattering of garments but what's the alternative? - Flannel shirts, corduroys and stout brogues perhaps, should we olduns all dress like gamekeepers?

Barry

Lawrence001
03-06-2024, 07:14
You don't need stout brogues the Sunday magazines have lots of adverts for smart comfy shoes for the elderly. Corduroy is fine in the country but it should be slacks in town, assuming you don't want to wear a full lounge suit.

I think it was Ross Walker (the son of Peter Walker) who described the attire of a typical Quad customer as wearing a Viyella shirt with a rather grubby tie, corduroy trousers and a sports coat (possibly with leather elbow patches). No mention of shoes, but I suspect they would be Hush Puppies.

As a loyal Quad customer, I can assure you I do not fit the sartorial stereotype! :D

Actual age 53, how I feel inside, 23, I'm trans young, and you have to respect that by referring to me as 'young man', actually don't cos people often say that to old men.

Funny how they called the prostate examination 'digital', if only it actually were, its definitely more analogue, you know touchy feely real world vinylesque. I mean if it really were digital, then you could probably just sit on your lap and download that, knowarraImean?

Yeh, I don't really feel 23, I just wish I did. I got a bad back and my teeth are on the verge of falling out. Still at least I still got me hair. I keep hoping I'll meet a scenario like that old Hammer horror Dracula film where those 4 middle aged gents drink the blood of Dracula and are restored to youth, never gonna happen though I suspect, still, you never know!
