Apart from my introduction this is my first proper post so I hope this is OK.

I'm sure this has been done before so I hope it's OK to do it again.

The main benefit of my recent major system upgrade is that I'm listening to a lot of old music and some stuff that I wouldn't normally listen to.

I'm indebted to Andy sandwalkingdonkeymuncher, or whatever he goes by (together with his mmate Mart) for not only re-aquainting me with Nils Lofgren and Tracy Chapman but suggesting others stuff (Marcus Miller, Sarah McLachlan) that I'd never heard of. Nils Acoustic Live is simply breathtaking.

I'm normally a big fan of modern music and like to 'discover' new bands that I can then get my kids into. Sadly most of it is compressed to hell and badly produced/engineered.

I've returned to the days of my youth and am now a boring old fart. hell's teeth I've even been listening to Yes, Supertramp and Dire Straits.

So, fellow listeners, recommend me an album that will make me grin from ear because of its sonic brilliance. I have very wide tastes but not a massive fan of jazz and simply can't be done with classical stuff.

I'm all ears . . .

Sorry felllas. I'm sure the vinyl stuff sounds brilliant but as I don't have a turntable and have no plants to ever get one, it's CDs only I'm afraid.

And it can be the best album by the best band in the world but if the sound reproduction is crap I'm not interested.

Stuff I've been impressed with thus far:

Steely Dan (I knew I would be)
Jamiroquai (Not a massive fan but sound quality is superb)
Peter Gabriel (I'm now wondering what Lamb Lies Down is going to sound like)
Tracy Chapman (every album I've got sounds good)
Pink Floyd (especially Animals, possibly their best album)
Leonard Cohen (Ten New Songs - a rec from Sandy Andy)
The Eagles (pretty much everything seems good quality)

I'm spending hours listening to music. Can't be a bad thing. I've always thought work was grossly overrated anyway.

If you are looking for very well recorded & produced music then take a look or listen to anything on this record label (http://www.discogs.com/label/Fax+%2B49-69%2F450464)

They are very expensive secondhand due to the fact that they are all limited editions. However some have been re-released on the Ambient World (http://www.discogs.com/label/Ambient+World) label & these tend to be cheaper ;)

I can recommend each & every CD being very well recorded & vastly better quality than 99.5% of modern CDs. I know as i have each & every CD that was issued :eyebrows:

For those of you who like electronic music and in particular melodic trance, then this album is a rare jewel. Not only is the music stunningly produced, euphoric and uplifting, it also sounds like music and is not a collection of "repetative beats". I first came across this album in 1997, it was given to me by Pablo Gagarno himself. :) To this day, I would say this is one of the finest productions of electronic music I have ever heard.

A couple of suggestions from my own listening
Natalie Merchant Leave Your Sleep
Rory Gallagher Calling Card (re-mastered)
Ray Lamontagne Till The Sun Turns Black

If you can do the music download bit some of the so called “Hi Res” stuff out there is quite impressive but the choice is very limited.
Much of the Hi Res stuff wasn’t well recorded to start with so anything they’ve done to it after makes bugger all difference. It’s a bit of a con at the moment unfortunately. Ideally you need to check how the tracks were recorded before they got punted online as Hi Res and many of the sites that do Hi Res are reluctant to give you that info.
One might think that most re-mastered CD’s would be a safe bet but in my experience, unfortunately not. However, given the second hand price of CD’s on Amazon for example my policy is to get the re-mastered version in preference to the original just on the off chance that the re-mastering engineer wasn’t deaf or out of his brains at the time.
When it comes to quality recordings the vinyl guys do seem to have an advantage atm, but hopefully this will change as Hi Res gets taken out of the hands of people like Linn and the others of this ilk who seem to think that some obscure celtic string torturing wierdo’s are okay to listen to just because they’ve been well recorded. Snobbery and bullshit in Hi Fi once again crippling the industry.

Leonard Cohen (Ten New Songs - a rec from Sandy Andy)
.

If you liked that one then you MUST get Leonard Cohen - Live in London. You'll end up with the DVD too!

A second vote for Hugh Masekela - Hope.

I find every work by Lyle Lovett to be not only well recorded, but the arrangements are dynamic and intimate. The songs themselves are of varied styles and influences and always delivered by excellent musicians.
Many people only know him as the gawky country singer that snared Julia Roberts but he's Sooooo much more. Try Pontiac for starters.
Piano is usually by Matt Rollings, always a treat, he's worked with Marc Cohn but not sure which albums. He's on my strongest suggestion:

Larry Carlton - Saphire Blue

Start with the last track and you'll have a new reference! :eyebrows:

I've recently purchased Thomas Dolby's "Flat Earth" reissue (and remaster). Aside from it being probably the best album of the '80s (my personal opinion, challenged only by the Culture Club's "Color by Numbers"), it is a marvelous remaster. Not even a trace of brickwalling, a true audiophile feast for ears.

Be forewarned, though: due to the very sensible remastering (no audible compression or limiting), this CD sounds much quieter than most of the drivel that sells on the market today. Be prepared to crank up the volume in order to fully enjoy Mr. Dolby's masterpiece.

Amused to Death would have been a great single album. Unfortunately it was a double. Good sound quality in the main, but I remain to be totally convinced by the 'Q sound' effects (I think that's what they were called) which sound curiously un-natural and 'phasey' IMHO. Still worth a listen though.

If your'e not familiar with his work then it's a great place to start. I grew up on a diet of Queen\Zep\Rush ect and whilst always a Rory fan and was lucky enough to have seen him live, it is only in more recent years that I have come to appreciate what a great talent he truly was IMHO.

Also if you like your guitarists then check out Joe Bonamassa though he's much better experienced live.

I'm all ears . . .

Contra by Vampire Weekend. I downloaded it and it sounded great, but I recently bought the CD because it is worth every penny. Amazing production with hints of Paul Simon African rhythms, vocals and a whole lot more. Would make a crap system sound good. Radio listeners won't hear most of the stuff in that production. Trust me.

Just got Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. Cost me £1.56 including postage.

Listened to it three times. Brilliant reproduction. Why can't all albums be as good as this?

Harry, have you been living in Outer Mongolia for the last 25 years?

;)

Think I'm on my 3rd vinyl copy, also have it on CD & SACD - I bet hifi dealers still drag it out for dems too - it makes a Matsui mini system sound good... :)

the thing is that album has been a victim of its own success. I really like it for the music, the fact it is well recorded is a bonus. Some however have branded it 'coffee table' music whatever that is and it has been pigeon-holed along with 'Famous blue raincoat' (which I think is crap) and 'A walk across the rooftops' which I quite like, despite it being on Linn records..

You should hear the 20th anniversary edition, which sounds superb. A solitary example of a recent remastering that is better than the original. Bernie Grundmann at the helm.

Nothing to do with the SQ Martin, rather I don't like the 'music' although I am a huge fan of Cohen and have been for 20 years. just seems like a karaoke job to me.

I'd agree, and I love "Your Latest Trick." "Walk of Life" gets on my wick though! (And "Money for Nothing", to a slightly lesser degree - over exposure I suspect, or maybe Sting! ;))

...as well as having a guitar part that sounds almost exactly like "Bird of Paradise" by Snowy White!

Unusual choice I know but I like 'So Far Away' off of that one. Love Over Gold is a better album though, and better produced (I've got the original vinyl release and the Sony SBM remaster CD).

Now that track, played loud on my system, can take your head right off. It's that build-up at the start...

I love a good guitar solo from Dave Gilmore in Comfortably Numb to Joe Satriani in Surfing With the Alien. That solo in Snowy White's Bird of Paradise is orgasmic.

Aye, Stan Webb on Chicken Shack's "Running and Hiding" is a joy, as is the breathless Richard Thompson solo on Fairport Convention's "High School Confidential" cover. Bryn Haworth on "Saturday Morning" is also a favourite, along with (acoustic) Chris Leslie on "Loving Hannah" by Whippersnapper, and of course Gordon Giltrap's anazing "Ives Horizon"

I'll have to get some of them out now... here comes the vinyl

:)

I knew Hymns Of The 49th Parallel was a very special album when my wizzened up old grump of a boss said one of the tracks made him cry. Its a compilation of covers, but they are all silky smooth and guaranteed to pull you in. K.D. Lang was on a winner with this one. Used a couple of the tunes at my wedding a few years ago.

As there seems to be a critical mass of Floyd enthusiasts on here might I suggest 'Dubber side of the moon', a heavier dub remix by the Easy Star All Stars of their original cover 'Dub side of the moon' which was very nice too, but stuck a little too religiously to the original. This time round they've got the likes of Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, and dreadzone in to sort them out. It's pretty well recorded/produced too. 'Money' done in a dancehall/dubstep style is particularly interesting.

Eric Johnson is usually very demanding when it comes to production. The Venus Isle album sounds a little washed out; but, the others are quite nice. Good mix of power and melody, instrumental and vocal.

nitin sawhney 'broken skin' is pretty good hifi jizz fodder
If you get your sound stage right it literally fills every square inch of your room with sounds

Hamish is absolutely right, if you want an album to blow your socks off, Broken Skin is well worth a listen.

If you want something that can 'blow the bl**dy doors off' as Michael Caine would have said - you could consider AWOL Nation's latest album... can't remember the title off the top of my head but the track 'Sail' has levels of bass I didn't even knew existed...

Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome" -- get the 2010 remaster, and prepare to be blown away!

I just got this today. Mainly bought for the bonus cd. I've always thought that, although I love the singles from this album, the rest of the tracks are quite weak. Plus there are so many mixes of the singles, often better than the album versions, but whatever, it's still worth owning!
