View Full Version : Tiny Totem arros

Looking at the Totem arros, for no particular reason, just the fact that they're small, and hence that means a smaller sound?? Wanna try and extinguish this dreaded bass boom without all the room treatment malarkey. They size up at only 85cm tall, and 13cm wide (+18cm deep). hard to believe such a narrow speaker would actually remain stable enough to play music without distortion! I get on ok with the Lintons, in fact I really like them, but the boom really disappoints with a fair amount (but not all) music. Arros retails at £1800, a lot of dosh for a pair of matchsticks? I did try Neative Motive Sx2 once, but found them a bit strident. I prefer the 'wider' more open sound of the Lintons.
Well they certainly get good reviews. Is there a Totem agent near you, so you could try out a pair in your own room?
Audio T and Sevenoaks are both agents for Totem Arro, and both have branches near you.

Thanks Barry, but after searching their websites, nothing found under 'Totem arro'.

If you're buying Totem Arros expecting a 'smaller' sound, you;re going to be disappointed! How Totem manage to get such a big and expansive sound from pretty much all of their loudspeakers is a mystery to me.
I suspect some sort of witchcraft or the involvement of the dark lord Lucifer himself, but I don't really care as I haven't heard a bad pair yet.
Arros are brilliant, as Adam says, they are not a small sound and they boogie. Just brilliant speakers all round if you can accomodate their instability ie no kids or in a position where they're being walked past regularly by a female member of the household :D
Sound great with sugden amps too. I had a mint black pair not so long ago that I sold so cheap.

I have won a pair of totem sttafs off ebay, 280 notes with the shipping, not had considered arros are 1.8k new. Please nobody tell me sttafs 'aren't the ones you want '! They appear to be the same size as the arros.
Reading the reviews, I don't think you will be disappointed.

**** me parcel force even worse than royal mail, why don't they just roll over and call it a day? Where are my speakers? We tried delivering.....But there was no card left......We will bring this up with the depot manager...............again, we tried delivering, no card left, so I just got them sent to my local post office, be there monday apparently, see if that works!!!
Now with someone like DHL or DPD you get a text message with the hour or two of a specific day there'll be with you, the difference in customer service is huge

Had the Totem Arros with the Sugden amp. Was a good combinaison.
I would buy second hand and maybe go up the Totem ladder with the Sttafs or the Sky Towers!

The royal mail tracking service can be god awful, the pda's used are over stretched and often dont work correctly, probably the same with parcelforce, for the most part the workforce are trying their best with both hands tied behind their backs. With regards to not leaving a card, they dont on the first delivery attempt anymore,or on a Sunday,

Even though I chose for the Sttafs to be delivered to my local post office, they came straight to my flat, which is good, cos I was in. Thing is the seller wasn't totally truthful about the condition, as they have a slight crack in the front of one of the boxes where the front part of the box meets the main body, it does move a tiny bit when I press it, would this make a difference to the sound? There's been some effort at touching it up as you can see.

What a sickener Mike :( My suggestion:
Connect them up first, to give you an idea of how Totem Arros sound and whether the sound is for you. Then get them sent back. Otherwise you'll always have doubts about whether they are performing correctly.

Ah well, seemed to good to be true! They were only £230 + the shipping, the seller bang out of order though, he barely concealed his disingenuousness! I'm listening to them currently, they seem ok. Would a bit of glue not sort this out? May have to accessed from inside though to do an air tight job.

Open a case via ebay, well I would ,if the seller doesn't comply ebay will more likely refund you and close the case and you won't have to return them

What usually happens is that Ebay says you can return them, and it provides a label, so will probably just get a refund. I'm wondering though would a repair be possible? The damage is very slight, but I don't know whether it will get worse, can it be glued? Would likely need access from inside the speaker.

If you can get at the inside, this might be just the job. Very tough, and expands slightly, so gives you a good chance of making it airtight.

Guy claims that damage wasn't there when he sent them, even though some attempt at touching them up has been made! And he refunded me £30, didn't even ask was that acceptable, just did it, think I'll just return them. The looseness of the cabinet so close to the main driver is concerning.

They sound ok, but I'm not sure whether that crack on the side will get worse over time, I'll try and reach out to someone techy on these forums for advice. I told the seller I wanted to return them as I didn't want a lame duck, and he just said keep them, and refunded me, so he must have known about the fault. So nice to have them to see if I like the sound, and if I do might buy a decent or a new pair at some point. I've also just moved flat so comparing them to my Lintons is gonna be a bit hard at first, as I have to acclimate myself to how the Lintons sound in this flat.

For the minimum fuss I'd just repair it from the outside with some liquid wood. Should be fine although it won't look great.
Don't think I've ever heard that Totem model but not been impressed by the ones I have heard. Whereas I really liked the Lintons.

Wondering what's an easy and cheap way to put spikes into these speakers? Or perhaps just use those rubber pod things? They have 3 small holes in them already, I think for Totem's own brand spikes.

Have a look on Ebay for some rubber feet you can stick on - it's debatable whether spikes are any good sound wise anyway.

Linton's boom less in this flat I think, the Totems slightly less so than the Lintons.
From the photos, I think you´re missing the plinth pieces that , with my Arros, at least came included in the box, ready to attach and they had 4 spikes. Take a shufty at the photos in the 6 Moons.com review. The curious thing is that you were instructed to fix them using some black goo, blutack - like material, also included in the box. The actual plinth itself was just some mdf of about 1.5mm, with chamfered corners I think, sprayed matt black. and oversized c/w the tower dimensions so that the width and depth increased by about 3/4 inch on all sides. They did provide just that bit more stability that was needed and also adding some lead shot in the lower chamber below the rear port also helped a lot.
I also used them with my Sugden A21a and I don´t remember any boom at all but my floor is solid concrete. I very much doubt that a neighbour anywhere has ever been known to complain about the noise. The Arros just don´t represent a nuisance factor which is probably their worst defect - when it comes to changing them, ´er indoors will call any new speakers "bloody monstrosities" because nothing can compare looks and convenience-wise.

Thanks for the info Chris, 1.5mm seems very thin though for a plinth. I suppose I could just screw any old bit of wood into them, bit of ply may be. BTW to confirm the model I have are 'Sttaf'.

Stored the Sttafs away for now, gonna use the Lintons in this flat for a few months before I try the Sttafs, so that I can properly assess both. The Lintons do sound slightly different here than in my last place, but I'm not so free hear to play at louder volume so may never really know, the hippies upstairs seem to be in alot.
They will probably appreciate some loud rock music then.
I once rented a house that had poxy students living in the basement below my living room.
In deference to neighbours I don't tend to play music before 1100. Sometimes I would put something on maybe at 1130 or 1200 and they would bang on their ceiling (my floor). I always took that as a sign that they wanted the volume turned up, which I obliged.
They got the last laugh though. When they moved out after their three years were up I went down there and discovered there was no separate electricity meter. I'd been paying for their power the whole time.

Outwitted by students, that's got to sting a bit :ner:
I remember when a mate of mine and his other half rented this slightly run down flat, where his only neighbour was a judo club occupying the floor above. Somehow he discovered that one of the wall sockets didn't go to his meter, so absolutely everything was plugged into it. Fridge, telly, stereo, a variety of appliances... his leccy bills never amounted to more than a standing charge and a few light bulbs. How they never had a fire I've no idea.
Outwitted by students.
Poxy students.
A friend of mine was troubled by his upstairs neighbour playing music loudly in the evening.
For some strange reason the fuse box for the two flats was just outside his flat. So whilst the neighbour was out, my friend scraped down the fuse wire to about the thickness of a hair. So when the neighbour came back from work, the lights would still work, but as soon as he switched on the hi-fi the fuse would blow.
Not sure if it did the trick, but it certainly gave my friend satisfaction.

Complain directly to the noise offenders, and take legal "anti nuisance" action if necessary. It's illegal and cowardly and potentially dangerous.

Sorry to hear that Geoff, what happened?
At the risk of sounding like a right argumentative old bugger, can I ask if you would feel strongly about it if you hadn't been on the receiving end? Because this is the case for most of us, that we don't think about the consequences until they happen to us.
Having said that, no way would I be messing with electricity, no way. I've had a few shocks in my time and they are never fun.

Whilst working overseas a dispute with a disgruntled local led that person to mess about with the mains fuse box, located outside my house. Not only did they swap out the fuses so that the fuse for the cooker was put in the slot for the lighting circuit, but they also disconnected the grounding bar so that there was no earth protection on any socket. I was fortunate to smell burning wiring in time to prevent a major fire or possible electrocution. I still had to engage an electrician to come out and fix the damage and check that everything was working safely.
Even without this event I would still feel the same. I despise cowardly acts of "revenge" for perceived insults or grievances. If there is a problem talk to the other party and if necessary take legal action. For me such actions are not only criminal, they reveal a nasty vengeful personality.
I remember when I was living in Leeds back in the 80s when a group of local youths were running rampant deflating tyres, and snapping off car aerials. In a single night they would damage up to a dozen cars. No doubt they thought it a great prank. It wasn't so much fun for one of my disabled neighbours who were made housebound until the next day when they could get someone with a footpump to get them mobile again.

I'm using the Totems again now after about 5 months, as I got tired of the boom from the Lintons, my space is too small for them. So the Totems are just plain bottomed - no holes for spikes, how should I mount them? Think I'll sell the Lintons on as much as I've loved them, just don't have the space, and I've started using headphones more too, the totems I think are fine for my rather small listening space, I say small, it's not a box room, but because of the positioning of my sofa I sit only a few metres from them. Looks much better too with these 'Tiny Totems, would love a pair in some shade of brown, though for the sake of 2K, black will do!

They should have plinths that blue tak on to the bottom.
Other wise you can get feet that easily screw in and look pretty good. Almost like mini outriggers

Not so much love for spikes these days Mike, their effectiveness has been called into question. But there are all sorts of isolation feet available on Ebay, ranging from pound shop prices to Future Shop madness.
You could try summat like these for not much dough:

These Totems (not arros but some other model whose name escapes me) are sounding pretty sweet, not bad for a freebie. I got my Lintons for sale now in the classifieds, or rather 'Private exhibitions'!
Living room looking so much neater now, and these Totems are more than adequate for the space.
I've just got them sitting straight on the carpet, they sound ok, but of course any improvement possible through the use of spikes, pads or whatever would be welcome. I was thinking rubber pads on marble (or faux marble) chopping boards, but trying to keep things as discreet as possible visually.
