Our local record shop is involved this year for the first time, but looking at the list not seeing much to tempt me

RSD Saturday 20 April, just wondered if this is of interest to anyone on AoS ?I get RSD stuff on occasion. This year is quite good. I thought last year was a bit weak on selections.

Never started. As you say far too pricey and the records they are pushing are of no interest to me.

Nothing much of interest for me, I'm going to go to a couple of local record shops that aren't involved instead, one of which is doing 20% off for the day.
didn't realise this was today, I was planning on going record shopping today, anyway.
A couple of CDs on the list that I might be interested in
Thinking about it, there are no independent records shops left around here. They were all pushed out by HMV years ago.
There are three here that are participating.

Had a look on RSD website and found a list of 'exclusives'. Not much there of interest to me. I can't see any prices attached to these titles - so I assume you have to turn up to find out. With every man and his dog taking the piss with new record prices, I can't see RSD being the place to go for bargains.

Had another look at the list, there is a Talking Heads album and a Lowell George album which I might pick up depending on the prices.
Not a collector or trader so I don't really know, but my understanding is that a lot of the stuff from previous years has appreciated considerably in value?

The only record I ever bought on Record Store Day was about 8 or 9 years ago, and it was a mono recording of Deep purple's Book of Taliesyn on white vinyl (don't judge me, I didn't know till I got it home). I'll have paid about 20 quid iirc. Just seen one on Ebay for £38, so that won't be financing a Caribbean cruise.

If I cant find it online wont be bothering with an inflated price on EBay
I've just looked. There are plenty of Talking Heads LPs to be had on-line for around £25 or less.

Yes there will be but not the RSD Rhino Live 2lp set on Rhino
went up there - about a dozen people queueing outside - but I was told that early doors there was a line all the way to the corner of the street, which is quite a distance.
Only two at a time allowed in the shop but he knows me so he let me in too.
Eventually he brought a trestle table out onto the pavement and put what was left on that. Someone paid £30 for a Bowie album. No CDs (might have been interested in the 2CD De La Soul but no dice).
So just had my usual root through the s/h CDs. Must have been some big Country fan dump his collection as there was a ton of Waylon Jennings and Conway Twitty.
Anyway got 8 albums including an original CD release of 'Aja' (flat transfer from a master) which I'd been after for a while. £28 the lot so better value than the Bowie LP although no doubt that will be £300 in a few years.
Lots of youngsters in the queue plus a bloke who looked like a miniature Walter Becker.

No rush, I read somewhere there 8000 copies, so hopefully will be able to pick it up at a decent price, £64 well overpriced

He didn't order in any of the CDs - and I couldn't be arsed to walk up into the town to see if they had it at the other shop.
I did my own "RSD" today, but was done trawling the charity shops!
Nine CDs for £6, not too bad.

Some shops put the surplus up for grabs on the net for extortionate prices. I bought Gallows Pole soundtrack by Goat for £27. Looked on the net and quite a few places had it for £70.
Disgusting behaviour for participating shops to do that, shame on them.

Were they definitely shops? I had a quick search on Ebay for Alison Goldfrapp's "The Love Reinvention" (which is a RSD 24 release, though I don't know how much the shops were asking). A few businesses selling it on Ebay for around £40 with the postage. But as for "private" sellers, well... they were all taking the piss, but this one gets the crown... :steam: name and shame!

Better off starting high then dropping your price until someone buys, than starting low and losing potential profit.
Overheads of running physical shop are massive these days, everyone wants a piece of you, plus it's all heavily over-regulated at vast expense. Can't blame the shopkeep for trying to make a few bob.

I don't normally comment on RSD because, as they say, if you don't like something then you don't need to spend time on it or spoil others' fun with your negativity. But the OP did ask...
I think it is way, way beyond its original justification. It's an artificial spike in the market that takes up pressing plant time and causes a secondary market pricing frenzy. Most of it is old material merely with substandard coloured vinyl or extra cardboard. It knocks out delivery times for normal non-RSD sales. I believe it excludes second hand record shops from participating so isn't a true record store day anyway.
In an age when playing records has become priced out of the lives of ordinary folks it perpetuates the bad joke that is the so-called "vinyl revival".
Obviously I'm a bit grumpy this morning but you can see why I don't usually bother commenting on it.

I think RSD started before the 'vinyl revival'. Okay, so it was and is a marketing exercise, but it's possible that it's at least partly responsible for the revival.
Whether the revival was good thing or not is debatable. It's certainly made used records a lot more expensive, which is only a good thing if you already have lots of them and are not planning on getting any more.

My local second hand shop participated, so they're not excluded.
Perhaps things have changed, I had heard that on a YouTube video made by a second hand record shop owner.
A couple of Christmases ago my daughter asked for a turntable. I got her a CD player and a stack of CDs since there's no way she'll be able to afford records. One of her friends has 5 LPs and no turntable, they're all still sealed adorning his bedroom walls. The modern world, eh?
Happily the world looks a bit better now I've had a coffee:smoking:
