It is with a heavy heart that we have to report the death of Grant Brown, known to us by his forum name 'Struth' on the evening of the 21st March 2024.
Grant was a major and popular contributor to The Art of Sound forum: clocking up just over 99,000 posts covering his interests in music (jazz and blues especially), whisky, tea, coffee and film. Grant will be sorely missed by all of us Moderators and I'm sure by many of the faithfull Members of AoS.
Grant was a total star. He always had time to answer questions and was an amazing contributor to the Forum. I for one will miss him dearly and my heartfelt sympathies go out to his family. R.I.P Matey... you will be missed.
Jo (The Black Adder)
Grant made a huge personal contribution to this forum and community. We are going to miss him terribly.
Martin (Macca)
Grant was a friendly, gentle and affable guy and I will miss him terribly.
Geoff (walpurgis)
Although I never got to meet Grant, or even speak to him directly, I felt I had known him as a friend for years. That was what Grant was like: gentle, considerate and knowledgeable, and always ready to help. His contribution to this forum and community is incalculable and he will be greatly missed.
I like to think he somewhere else talking and drinking whisky with those Blues and Jazz artist(e)s, whose music he loved so much.
Barry
If, and when, we get any details of the funeral arrangements, we will post them here for those who would like to pay their respects.
Many thanks
Oh that is very very sad. We all get pleasure from interacting with other members on here and despite the fact that we may have never met them you can get a real sense of the person from what they say and how they say it. For one to pass away it is a real loss to all of us.
My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Really sad news, he was of course not in great health and had not been feeling well recently. We shared , in no particular order, a love for Glasgow Rangers, Malt whisky and good music. he was lovely guy, and without fail he would always comment on anything I posted. Only met him in person the once, when I purchased my Pathos amp from him , a couple of years ago, at the time he was selling some equipment off and most of his vinyl.
I will miss our chats and his advice/thoughts, we will be home tonight from holiday and pour a glass of something special in a toast to him.
Very sad news. A big and generous personality on this forum for years. RIP.

Oh very sad indeed, I will miss him greatly he was very helpful and supportive to me when I was recovering from my own health issues. He always had a good and supportive comment on audio and music and pointed me at several artists new to me. He also had a great sense of humour I will miss our occasional chats.
Very sad to hear this news. I will miss his generosity and kind nature and all the help he gave over the years. His comments were always appreciated and his knowledge on many subjects and equipment always gave an invaluable insight. I will miss his constant presence and amiable banter.
I feel we have lost one of the true Gents of AOS and someone who was a great personality on this forum.

That is a shock and I will really miss him even though we never met. A great loss to AOS with his wit and wisdom, one of the reasons I enjoy posting on AOS. We often exchanged comments and he was a true gent.
God bless you Grant.

Met Grant loads of times until Covid arrived and stopped us all in our tracks. I visited him at his home on several occasions and had a listen to his system and a long chat. Grant was a real gent and was very knowledgeable about music and all things hifi. He built his own speakers and had a treasure trove of vintage gear in a room in his house. He also had a big collection of rare vinyl. Lovely guy and a sad loss to us all.
I will miss Grant. Due to Grant and I having lots of WhatsApp messages over the years his daughter Angela contacted me to inform me of his passing on Thursday evening. I'm so glad she did. Since then we have had a few messages. One message I sent to her was the following which sums up my feelings.
Once again my sincere condolences on the passing of your dear dad. At times we had long chats on the phone which I enjoyed very much. He was a deeply warm person and always looked out for other people. This is despite all the sadness he and your family have had to endure.
He was a very much respected leader on the Art of Sound, always taking care to help people and providing positive feedback to others. He will be much missed.
RIP Grant.

Really saddened to read of this awful news. I know Grant has struggled with health issues, but still a shock.
In spite of it all, and some personal tragedies, he was always a positive force on here, always ready with help and practical advice, which could make even the most inexperienced forum members feel valued.
Many times I have laughed out loud at some of the random comments he'd make - spoken with a gentle humour that was often odd, but never offensive. I loved that about him.
His passing will leave a huge hole in this forum, and undoubtedly in the lives of those who knew and loved him. I wish I'd met the man (there's a lesson here for all of us).
God bless you Grant.

Oh no that is tragic news.
I had the good fortune to meet him at his home, a true gent. The forum will be an emptier place without him.
RIP Grant. I shall sink a dram later in memory.

Just found out the very upsetting news from reading the recent posts on the whisky thread, which seems appropriate given his love of a wee dram or two [emoji23]
I would just add one thing to the above as someone who browses and posts on a few hifi forums, that it was Grant's modest, gentle and patient contributions to AoS that largely made it what it was (and hopefully remains) - the most pleasant, welcoming and unassuming hifi forum in the UK.
Raising a glass to you Grant, all the best wherever you are.

The news is very sad. Much pleasure being part of forum is chatting with other members often never meeting in person and iirc Grant was one of the first people I interacted with upon joining and quickly I got a good idea of his humorous ways along with a depth of knowledge on many topics … I shall miss the man all the more for never meeting him in person and although I’m not supposed to be drinking at present I’ll raise a small snifter of Malt to him tonight
Great shame, very knowledgeable chap - I will have a drink to him this evening.
I always enjoyed his input here. Such sad news
Sad news indeed.
I shall be raising a glass of something suitable this evening in his memory.

Very sad news - my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
I picked up a few fine whisky and coffee bean suggestions from his recommendations, and I always found his regular coffee report and pictures oddly compelling!

Hi all.
I just wanted to update you all. Grant didn't want a funeral. He chose to be cremated with just a small gathering of family.
Also, his family has a link to this thread so they will be checking it. It's nice to know that your words of sympathy will be reaching his family.
Thank you to Edward for the info.
Blessed be, Grant.

This is sad news.
Although I never met him, he obviously had in-depth knowledge about hifi and music and was one of those rare people who could express what he knew in a most gentle way that just invited you into a conversation with him.
I once made a joke post about bringing one of my jukeboxes to a NEBO event and Grant quietly wants to know what model it is. Turns out he had worked as a tech at a jukebox hire company.
I'll miss his posts.
RIP Grant.
Never met Grant but had occasional contact with him via posts and the message system on here. Such a loss, my thoughts are with his friends and family.
RIP Struth!

Today is an example of day when Grant and I, would have had a chat , him glass half empty and me half glass full about the football tonight, he would be saying we would be out classed and he would have been right but you never know , well we did go to Nice and win 4-1, if we win tonight I’ll have a dram of something decent, another of our shared interests.
Agreed, he is indeed sorely missed, bless him. A true gent, and had time for everyone.

I should add that Grant did much of the heavy lifting to keep things running during Marco's absence, by starting and resurrecting threads on football, cinema, tea and coffee, as well as whisk(e)y. He was also very skillful in finding appropriate links to help others Members with their enquiries.

Grant's absence is felt as strongly as ever, and I don't see that changing any time soon. He really has left a hole in this forum. The best way we can honour Grant is to do all we can to keep it all going with kindness and respect for each other, it's what this forum (community) does best imo.

Stuff like this doesn’t always come around, so all about the Folks that take part.
Miss Grant, he was a Pal. Glad I got to know him.
Good times to come too, let’s make that happen.

Nice words folks!!
I dont often spin the vinyl (because I am lazy) but this afternoon ,I fired the deck up and listened to Solar Fire -Manfred Mann and Crime of the Century -Supertramp
All through a Shibata tipped AT 95 cart I bought off of Grant !!

You might as well give up the smokes just get a load of food and (soft)drink in and don't leave the house for a week or 10 days, the nicotine should have left your body by then you'll be amazed how much better you feel, mentally and physically.
How much is a pack of 20 ciggies?
Pigmy Pony
21-02-2025, 08:42
About 14 quid.
You could buy a couple of CDs for that, and the pleasure given would continue long after you had finished the 20th fag.

That's one way to look at it. Another is that a twenty-a-day smoker could save enough for a £5k upgrade to his kit each year. Get some nice speakers for £5k. I get my ciggies at half price and burn through about 12 a day, but it's still a lot of money.
Lawrence001
21-02-2025, 10:25
Bear in mind more people now roll their own as prices have got so high. So more like a £1k upgrade (depending on how many you smoke and how thick you make them, I used to make "prison rollies" so a small pack would last a week.
Pigmy Pony
21-02-2025, 10:47
You are quite correct, another thing is that the hassle of rolling them (though it does quickly become second nature) makes you smoke less than with ready-mades. Good luck with your continued abstinence Lawrence :)

Not going to quit but will cut down by 50 percent.

Using filters could reduce the amount of tobacco used by about 15% or so. Some saving to be made there, depending on how much filters cost.

Grant posted back in 2017 that he'd smoked 50 a day for 35 years before finally giving up in about 2009. Really impressive, but it does not surprise me to learn this, just further confirmation of the man's strength of character.
50 a day! That's chain smoking, and can't be good for anyone especially their health.
Bond was on 60 a day and it didn't cramp his style.
Of course nowadays that would be unaffordable on a secret agent's salary.
Although I suppose he travels a lot so can maximise his duty-frees.

Maybe in the Moore era, but Connery never got on that well with 'M' so I doubt he got many expense chits signed off. He even has to get the train home in 'From Russia With Love' and when he totals his Aston in 'Goldfinger' he doesn't get another one.
That he's a smoker actually saves the world in 'You Only Live Twice.'

I bet he could still afford proper fags though, not the snide ones from under the counter at the corner shop.

Custom made for him by Morland & Co 83 Grosvenor St London (don't look for it etc) but when he runs out whilst abroad he smokes Chesterfields in America, and Royal Blend in the Caribbean.
Suspect he never went in a corner shop in his life. Especially not the sort that have 'Western Union' signs outside.
Can't believe it's just over 2 years since Grant passed away.
Sorely missed.
I heard he's still posting coffee pics somewhere...;)
indeed, still missed by us all I agree, god bless.
When I was a student I used to smoke Fribourg and Treyer Number One cigarettes:

For roll-ups of a more illegal nature, I used Golden Virginia rolling baccy.
Sad to think it is two years ago that we lost Grant. I still like to think he is somewhere sharing a dram or few with the bluesmen and jazz players whose work he so enjoyed hearing. We still miss him greatly.

I read very recently about someone who reaching an advanced age started feeling breathless and went for a checkup.
Applarently the doc said "Were you a smoker" with a response that he smoked his last one 25 years previously, and "what made you think that?".
Then the doc showed him the pictures of his lungs. and pointed out the damage.
This could just be an internet story though - but there may be something in it - that the damage doesn't really go away.
Maybe check with ChatGPT or Grok to see if there is any strong evidence for that.

My doctor recently gave me the hard sell about stopping smoking, telling me how smoking (and vaping too for that matter) are really bad for blood pressure. My blood pressure has got into the "dangerously high" category (around 190/90), so something had to be done.
I'm now into my fourth week of not smoking, and I do feel a bit better, though boredom-eating is the new enemy. But I can only fight one battle at a time...
Saving me some money as well, which is nice - so far the saving has paid for a nice little gold sapphire ring for Anita and a five quid record for me
COPD can be a nasty after effect.
My Mum ended up with it after 30+ years on the fags.
It took out Mr Spock too,
His chronic smoking habit got Nimoy in the end.

My mum too. I'm hoping that giving up in my early 50s is enough for me to avoid it.

So glad I gave up when I was 25.

It can only help, Lawrence. But have you given up fags, or just given up buying them? Because I know what you're like :ner:

Yeah, wish I'd done that. I'd be about £70k better off now. That'd buy a nice stereo and a dedicated listening room to put it in :)

Because I know what you're like :ner:This is a good point I skanked a couple of rollies at the Whittlebury show [emoji23] but if I bought a whole packet I'd smoke the lot. If they still sold 10s I'd probably buy those but they said it stopped people giving up. For me it just meant I'd have to smoke 20 instead of 10 on a night out and the next day.

:) That's how it would be for me... You'll be too young to remember this, but in the early 70s a lot of corner shops would sell you single cigarettes (seppies) for two or three pence each! I suspect their target customers would be schoolkids who might choose a fag over a bag of crisps with their lunch money. We never stood a chance.

Still the case in the 1980s, I think the going rate was 10p then. I didn't smoke as a teenager though.

As always an interesting thread drift, as a non smoker who has had asthma for over 60 years but has only recently become an issue, with several chest infections in the the last year or so. After another doctors visit a couple of moths ago I was referred for a CT scan, although it was not mentioned they were looking for lung cancer, thankfully I don’t have lung cancer but my windpipe is totally knaggered due to all the coughing and breathing issues.
This is something I will have live with and currently have another chest infection, just finished the latest round of antibiotics and steroids, not much change looks like heading back to the doctor for some more.
Sorry to hear that Robin. Do you use an inhaler? I would say keep up with the whisky, but that's only going to help the other pipe.

You have my sympathy Robin, a lifelong and unprovoked struggle with breathing issues.
Similar with my brother, who in spite of a healthy lifestyle (non-smoking as well as being being part of a rugby team for most of his adult life and a keen cyclist) getting throat cancer twice in recent years. Seems a bit unfair. He's been nagging me about smoking for years, and is buzzing that I'm now giving quitting a serious go.
Then there's my uncle, who has been super-fit all his life, being an instructor in judo, scuba diving, and rock climbing. Can't do any of it now due to Parkinson's, struggles to even walk the dog. Life can be a real shitbag.

Thanks Steve, we just have to deal with the hand we’ve been dealt, I have a few friends that are a lot worse off than me.
Grant was one of the good ones, I will miss him.
Rest in Peace Scottish Lord ( he owns 1 square foot of real estate in Scotland ) appropriately at a distillery .
That makes him a Scottish Lord.

It's been a long time since you last posted here. What have you been up to in the meantime? Any changes to your audio system, any new records, CDs etc.?
Every time you buy a bottle of Laphroaig whisky you can claim a square foot of distillery land. :)
I had my left lung removed a few years ago due to asbestosis , the surgeon showed me the damage that smoking for 30 years had caused , Barely anything ! 5mm shadow at the bottom of my lung , I then had a “ tombstone heart attack “ last year and again a completely different surgeon said the blocked arteries were nothing to do with smoking [emoji2369]
I’m now smoking every 30 seconds [emoji16]

sorry to hear that Andy . the surgeon is utterly bonkers !!! Smoking is 100% likely to cause blocked arteries
the detrimental effects of cigarette smoking on cardiovascular health, particularly atherosclerosis and thrombosis, are well established, and more detailed mechanisms continue to emerge. As the fundamental pathophysiology of the adverse effects of smoking, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and thrombosis are considered to be particularly important. Cigarette smoke induces endothelial dysfunction, leading to impaired vascular dilation and hemostasis regulation. Factors contributing to endothelial dysfunction include reduced bioavailability of nitric oxide, increased levels of superoxide anion, and endothelin release. Chronic inflammation of the vascular wall is a central pathogenesis of smoking-induced atherosclerosis.
