Massive audio and music inheritance.

A very good friend of 35 years long standing, died suddenly last year. We had a similar love of music, of all genres: classical; blues; jazz; folk; pop and rock, and world. He was also interested in the hi-fi side of things.

To my surprise, I received notification that he had left me his entire CD music collection, his DVD collection and all the associated electronics.

It was collected yesterday: requiring the use of a large transit van, and involving a 500 mile round trip.
So now I am a possessor of a legacy of around 500 DVDs, and at least 2,500 CDs (10 large plastic crates full) and a Krell KAV-400xi amplifier and Moon 260D CD player. There is also an Arcam CD player and a Rega Mira amplifier.

I now have the Herculean task of going through the source material; at least half of which already resides in my own collection.

I wonder what will happen to my stuff when I go? That said, respect to your friend, nice that he was thinking of you. You could list the CDs you don't want here, I'm now a huge CD fan, and a looking to replace some of my vinyls with them.

I have wondered that - I think/hope son in law (musician), and youngest daughter’s boyfriend will be interested. But, I should get around to pricing my record collection as there is enough to raise a few quid for my wife and I would hate to think that she would just sell the lot to a dealer for bugger all

I have just finished cataloging and housing 1,900 rock, pop and folk CDs.

I now have a roughly similar number each of Blues, Jazz and Classical genre CDs to catalogue and somehow find room for.

The task goes on! Oxfam have already received a few hundred CD duplications. :lol:

I think my collection is about the same as yours in terms of breakdown of genre but half the size.

I've never catalogued it, or my LPs. It's too daunting a task.

Weirdly though, I have about 230 Subbuteo teams and I've made a spreadsheet for them with reference number, club side, international side, home and away kits descriptors and duplicates for different eras :scratch:

Hi Barry, my condolences on the loss of your friend, who so kindly entrusted his love of music to you. It is im sure going to be something that will keep the memory of him with you forever.


My father did the same thing, thankfully not as many DVD's or CD's, there were some duplicates in our collections too, although why my father had three copies of Cliford Brown's - Brown and Roach Incorporated is a mystery, especially when he had already given me a copy having admitted to buying it twice !!

The sale of his equipment funded the replacement of my turntable, which will serve as reminder of my early memories of listening to Kenton, Ellington, Basie and Sinatra on his Pye Black Box with a Garrard turntable. I will always treasure the times we spent together at concerts and his love of all music, but in particular, jazz.

Ah - the Pye Black Box. One of the successful stereo record players in a housing not much larger than a typical portable record player.

It achieved a reasonable stereo performance by having the speaker for the two channels on the left and right hand side of the unit. The Black Box would be placed in a corner diagonally, so the sound from each side would be reflected off the wall towards the listener to give a reasonable stereo image.

I mean the original stuff I don't know about modern copies. Not been in a furniture store in at least 25 years.

Original G Plan worth good money now.
