Lovely speakers from the high point of Castle when they still made their own cabinets in Yorkshire. These are in the premium yew veneer and look very nice as can be seen in the photos.

They have the carbon fibre bass/mid drivers so no cracking like the earlier polypropylene ones they used (eg in the Harlechs).

They are ported at the bottom between the cabinet and the plinth to make placement easier (no rear firing port here).

A few small marks to the cabinets but overall in good condition as can be seen. I don't have any spikes as I use them on granite plinths but they are standard size and easily found if required.

They can be collected from near Durham for the next week or so, so I'm listing them at £180 for a quick sale.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/a8544e511b7fdbf38f09660debbb4afc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/a4f536d7bb79261980aaf841a38125c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/a92be8a5b4f4c48bde90ddd70f6521e9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/93050dc14141906bcd29fb944c5113c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/14b5c65247e6ba2c24d4cf334045be98.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/49acdb035b26074dbbcceabc5345500b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/7e60dbc6a4a99001f2f846f2b8c873ba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/aba3d74027221b6eff1c8200b048da67.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231226/541d47771eb6d5c45107a635eb1eeb06.jpg

I have always looked upon the Castle brand as a sort upper class manufacturer not necessarily for the components chosen but more the classy look of the whole package. Perhaps the name plays a little trick as well. I have heard some of the floor standers at shows but not in a home environment.

What a bargain! Thanks Ian yes they are especially in the yew veneer which looks beautiful and seems to shimmer in daylight. Unfortunately I can't keep all my speakers and I've just bought a pair of classic high end speakers so I need to move these on hence the price.

There has been some lovely gear come up for sale in the last few weeks on AoS, including these Castle Avons. I could have assemble a very nice 2nd system or even a great 1st starter system from some of the equipment recently FS.

Someone should snap these up they sound great and are a bargain.

Thanks Adrian yes bargain if you consider what a pair of speakers built like this would be in the shop now. I think they were £800 about 20 years ago so must be £2k speakers these days with hifi inflation.

I've spent much of the last few days listening to these while ripping CDs and doing those little jobs you keep putting off (like making short cables to run my TakeT supertweeters).

They've not had a chance to shine as they have been in rotation in my second system, and they don't stand up well in short A/B tests. (Rather like those unassuming speakers you might reject at a short dealer demo). However now they've been in for a few days their strengths have come to the fore.

They are quite laid back tonally and have a less forward presentation but you can listen to them all day with zero fatigue. The initial feeling of a loss of detail turns into a realisation that the detail is not thrown at you but is there if you sit back, relax and listen.

If these don't sell by Tuesday I'll be keeping them a while and trying them with my valve and class A monoblocs as I think they'll really shine with those. I'm currently using a Sony ES integrated so I could free up the top shelf (where my Ming Da valve pre was sat) to listen to my Sony DD TT. I'm not sure this is ideal for the Castles either.
