Do you like Christmas? Do you hate Christmas? Do you dread Christmas?

We are writing cards today and I have already decided not to bother sending as many this year.

Personally I am ambivalent / dislike most of Christmas apart from filling my face on Christmas Day.

I am sympathetic to those who have children as it should be an awesome time for them but very stressful and expensive for the parents.

The huge consumerist event seems to roll in earlier and earlier each year and you sometimes feel steam rollered by the whole thing.

Can't wait for it all to be over!

Christmas is for children (and by extension, their parents). As a child I loved Christmas; it was 'magic', but in those days preparations only started a week or ten days beforehand.

My father would dig up the Christmas tree from the garden, plant it the barrel we had for that purpose and bring it into the house - where I was allowed to decorate it. On Christmas Eve I hung up the stocking and had to go to bed early, so on Christmas Day I would awake to find a heavy, full stocking awaiting me.

These days Christmas is spoit by rampant commercialisation - and I now have a thoroughly cynical attitude to it all.

That said we shall be spending Christmas this year away, staying with friends in Lyon, France.

Macca

don't really care about the commercialism, I mean when we were young the pressies were the main thing not the baby Jesus so seems a bit hypocritical to frown on it now.

Used to be the only time you would see my father drink alcohol in daylight hours.

My main issue with it is that it now seems to extend from 26th November to 31st December. Just no need. I would bring back the death sentence for anyone putting up their decos before 15th Dec.

Barry
28-11-2023, 17:38
None of my family were church goers, so it was more a festival of the Winter, rather than anything to do with "the baby Jesus".

Pressies were modest and simple.

We weren't church goers but my parents were Christians and Christmas was partly about Jesus and all that. Is "not church goers" a euphemism for actively atheist?

Most of our Christmas is spent visiting, here there and everywhere when I'd really prefer to be at home. Too much time with people I've spent all year avoiding. Shouldn't grumble really, at least we have food and a warm place to eat it.

I never do cards. Nobody moans. They are used to it.
Presents are only for the kids now, and the hardest part is trying to stop my daughter being spoilt, and getting too many presents. We aim for just one family present from both sides of the family, but it does not always work out that way.

Mrs Puffin HAS to send cards every year to people we never hear from or never see from one year to the next. What irritates me intensely is the empty hyperbole and platitudes and other dross written in these cards. One example "Ooh it would be lovely to meet up again"...again?.....we haven't seen you since 1972!

I also dislike those 'round robin' messages that tell you how wonderful the sender's year has been: where they went on holiday; how well the children are doing at school, etc.

Even worse are the above, but sent electronically. Understandable, I suppose, given the cost of stamps.

Sounds like you need new friends Barry.

I'll be happy to send you a card telling you how thick my kids are despite the teachers' best efforts, and all the holidays we couldn't afford. And if there's enough room left on the card, I'll describe in detail our various ailments. I might even stretch to a first class stamp :)

I really should make more of an effort, we won't be around for ever. It would help if they had more interest in the things I like. And lived a bit nearer.

LOL... YES I GUESS. pan breid(bread) = deadI didn't know there was a Scottish version of Cockney rhyming slang.

struth
29-11-2023, 10:43
Chic Murray - Curry

Though many have started using another famous Scottish Murray for this one (Andy), it will always be the original and best for us.

Example: "Fancy a wee Chic Murray for dinner tonight? I canny be bothered cooking."

Corned Beef - Deif/Deaf

This one sees corned beef rhymed with deif (the way Scots would pronounce deaf), and is usually aimed at someone who isn't listening.

Example: "Listen pal, are you corned beef? I told you to beat it."
Hauf Inch - Pinch

A good one for someone who is known to be on the light-fingered side.

Example: "Aye it's a cracker eh? Wee Davey hauf inched it for us."
Mick Jagger - Lager

If someone asks if you fancy a Mick Jagger, it's usually an invite for a pint and not referring to the great man himself.
Example: "I'm guessing most us will be choking for a Mick Jagger when the restrictions are over and the pubs re-open."
Hampden Roar - Score

Though you might think this would be used for football, it's more likely to be used when asking for more details about something.
Example: "What's the Hampden for later? Where are we going?"
Single fish/Lillian Gish - Going for a pish

There's a few different versions of this one, but these two are the most popular, alternatively you can also be going for a Barry White.
Example: "I'm away for a Lillian Gish."
Gregory Pecks - Specks/glasses

One of the most widely used expressions, Gregory Pecks refers to your glasses.
Example: "Where's your Gregory's? You'll not be able to see what's happening later withou them."

Sky Rocket - Pocket

Another of those expressions that Scottish das are fond of.
Example: "Stick that in your sky rocket and save it for later."
Pan Breid - Deid/Dead

Hugely popular in Scotland, the old pan loaf also doubles up as another way of saying dead.

What would be wrong with that? Christmas is an amalgam of several festivals that used to be celebrated around that time of the year. I believe one of the celebrations was a 'winter festival': intended to propitiate the gods and ask them to lengthen the days, bring back the warm weather and life.

That sounds like a good deal, I don't know if we have anything like that here. Anyway, we're so far away from a bus route we need a car to get to the bus stop :( We used to have a bus service went past our house, then they did away with it about 15 years ago.

But on the plus side, gritters give priority to major roads and bus routes, and they must not have got the memo about us no longer qualifying, so 15 years on we still get gritted. In fact seeing the flashing amber lights through our lounge window gives us fair warning about overnight temps :)

got offered one of those but as i cant walk from house to stop, and even if i did, the bus would be unlikely to arrive and even if it did i wouldnt be able to get on. if i did get on, i would fall if i was on my feet when bus was moving meaning if i did get a seat i wouldnt be able to get off until it ran out of deisel:doh:

I have a bus pass, and like you I'm not so nimble on my feet. So I press the bell in good time, and the driver expects those passengers who want to alight, to remain seated and not to move until the bus has completely stopped.

I can also use my pass on buses anywhere in England. My partner has a Freedom pass, which she can use to travel free on buses in England, all public transport in London, as well as getting discount on British Rail.

The people of Ermin, Tennessee, have most definitely surpassed the legend of the Monkey Trial. Furthermore, theirs is no legend, we have the photos to prove it!

I think they'd find it very difficult to build nuclear bombs, internal combustion engines or coal fired power stations and all the other things that make a species civilised.

some may say they are far more civilised than humans..:eyebrows:

Thing is, all living things (animals and plant life) adapt to suit their environment, while we humans change the environment to suit us. And that's the problem. If we were gone the planet and its remaining inhabitants would do very nicely, and have no need for power stations, motor cars etc. They may even cope with lack of WiFi.

I genuinely wouldnt buy 1st class stamps, they no longer buy you a faster, 1st class service

First Class should be renamed 'this year delivery'. Though as Christmas approaches this cannot be guaranteed. At least it shows the recipient that you tried.

The RM issues are quite handy when you miss a birthday as you can just post a card after and blame them.

Do RM frank the stamps with the date of postage?

Do RM frank the stamps with the date of postage?

Not often these days,In fact they will delay your mail for a few days until you have a package

Do RM frank the stamps with the date of postage? If they do you can say it must have been delayed in the sorting office.

The first Christmas card of the year fell through the letter box today - unfortunately it was incorrectly addressed and was not for me.

I looked up the post code and redelivered the card.

Well happy Christmas to you all (however you feel about it).

For me the true meaning of Christmas, has nothing to do with secular consumerism. There is more to life than material things. Once you get back to basics and the baby in manger it’s good news to all people, for today a saviour is born, and he is Christ the Lord.

Thanks for being such a great forum and community with this mad hobby.

Have a good new year in 2024.
