Having been vinyl-less since Percy snapped the cantilever off my AT-OC9 and my phono stage walked when I traded my MF M3, today was a bit of a turn-around.

Having first missed out on a Denon DL-103GL when it went for rather too much (for me) on eBay, I then picked up this for a decent price:

Not new tech but probably better than anything I could have got for the same money.

And then I finally got around to speaking to my insurance company about my knackered cartridge and so for my £70 excess, I will shortly have an Audio Technica AT33EV care of Mr Cawley.

All in all, a pretty good day.

Well done Steve. Those Musical Fidelity units have a style all of their own and a very good reputation as well.

Well i can't say that i have ever seen these particular units in my life, nice, i like it :)

Hopefully they don't have the same reputation as the X-LP & X-LPS which came in the same round can, they were both rather susceptible to RF interference when using the MC inputs  Moving Magnet was a different kettle of fish where they were indeed very good performers for the money

Fingers crossed that these aren't like their simpler sister components ;)

Please have a look at the Rock-Grotto website for tune-up ideas. The X10-D I bought from Clive had a very "valvey" sound - warm and juicy balance but a bit veiled. A total recap and diode replacement opened the basically ok circuit up into something very much less intrusive. I now use it as a line stage from the fixed tape outputs from the Croft preamp into the Tape Monitor input on the revamped Quad 33 I use as a headphone preamp. Lovely

Nice phonostage. I have a MF X-LPS, not bad!!

How much was the X-LPS when it came out?

Na, your kidding. I thought the little MF X-LPS was around £180 when it came out??

I always thought they were a lovely designed series ascetic wise.
Often been tempted by the headphone amp and the mod kit from Rock Grotto.

Yup, if you use this as your preamp , you have to sacrifice the ability to listen to other sources.

Apologies, i didnt mean that a piece of Hi Fi could live a life of religious contemplation, i meant it looked dead good. I will refrain from using posh words in the future.

I agree, the MF cans looks good. And built very well for the money.

Funny though, because it does kind of neatly sum up the pleasures of being a vinyl junkie!

Especially if you arrange to clean your records as shown in John's (John7) avatar! :eyebrows: ('We've got smileys and were not afraid to use them!')
