Woken several times in night by wind/rain noise. All peace and quiet for the last few hours, but more to come?

I think that we are just outside of the “amber warning area”.

Tomorrow's forecast looks ok, though that may be different in Bury, which we are visiting. It's famous for it's black puddings, but we won't be coming back with any of that. Tbh I'm not sure why we are going, I suppose it gets us out of the house.

same here, it stopped so thought I'd nip round to Sainsburys but if course it started again as soon as I was out the door.

I'm sure this has to be the wettest year on record for these parts, I've lived here since 1987 and I can't recall it raining so much. I mean it's always been a rainy place but this year it's been almost none stop.

You see these arab places on the telly and its like the surface of the moon. I'm sure we could be saving it somehow and then flogging it to them. Millions of gallons just going down the drain. Just the flood at the end of my street could probably irrigate a field for a whole year.

I thought so too, for a change :) Maybe we could do a swap - pipe water to them, and in return they could pipe some oil our way. I mean being realistic, water should have more value than oil (get into a bath of oil, and no amount of Radox is going to make it work).

Really, they have enough money, they should be on top of this by now. Building more desalination plants instead of ever-taller bling towers and islands you can see from space.

We'd need a long hosepipe ofc. Argos do a 15 metre one for £32, so we'd need about forty thousand of them linked together to reach, say, Bahrain.

It's do-able - although we might need to wait for them to get some more stock in.

The Romans got water to run uphill, I saw it on telly the other week. Okay they did have to build towers with cisterns on top but maybe we could use existing buildings for that?

Or put the standpipe somewhere really high to start with - like the top of Ben Nevis.

Only 1540 and it's getting dark here already. Had to use a torch to find a CD to put on.

And it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Back when we had the empire could we not just have moved the whole shebang to somewhere with better weather? Left this island for the French or someone to have?

Talk about missed opportunities.

I mean I know there's a 'New England' but their weather's even worse than ours.

Bahrain? I thought that's what Yorkshire folk called a dry spell.

Looked it up, turns out it's an actual place. But your calculations are a bit out, it would take about 400,000 15 metre reels, so about £13 million. Still less than was spent on the Burj Khalifa though, which is good for nothing but giving them a better view of the desert.

Oh yeah I didn't carry the zero.

Good job I don't work in Finance. Except I do.

Anyway still pretty cheap to do in the scheme of things. Charge them a quid a gallon, I reckon just my street could earn a million a year from it.

Bins day in Heysham today, where they have them stupid little oblong recycling boxes. Maybe due to being just a mile from Morecambe Bay, every one of those boxes left for other postcodes thanks to the 50+mph winds, losing their contents in the process. The street looked like Sunday morning at Glastonbury Festival.

When the bin wagon turned up later there really wasn't much left in the boxes to empty. Just how much effort did they put into clearing the bottles- and cans-strewn street, answers on a postcard :(

Back there tomorrow, hoping for calmer weather. And a bit less rain would be nice.

Not a good sign it getting that cold this early, usually means a long winter ahead.

But you can always wrap up warmer - it's the wind and rain and damp that does me in.

Yes, I find it easier to do physical work in colder weather. I spent the day building 20 metres of 6 foot closeboard fencing today. Didn't feel the cold until the sun went down and I could no longer see what I was nailing

Yesterday seemed an OK day - fairly dry and a bit of sun. The wind from the days before had blown most of the leaves off into piles, so that might save time - make it easier to bag them up.

Let's see what today brings - still dark - and around zero degrees so far. Should be dry most of the day - perhaps!

No - a hollow would probably get the sun above rooftops - it'd be hills that would block out the light. Maybe you're on a north facing slope with houses further up towards the top.....

yes it runs NE-SW - ideal for never catching the sun. Like they planned it that way.

Going to be really cold next week, down to zero most of the time.

Got a one man tent somewhere, one of those geodesic ones. I might pitch it in the living room and just live inside it.

Tent sounds like a good idea, play some CDs really loud, be like being at a festival. Though for the full Glasto experience you need a neighbour to come round and do a shit outside your tent and not tell you.

Speaking on behalf of pissed up knobbers everywhere I can tell you that festivals can be a really confusing time. I once returned to my tent on my own, got undressed(ish), crawled into my sleeping bag and reached for my iPod. It wasn't there.

My first thought was that someone had nicked it. My second thought was "this is not my tent". So it was a case of get out of there sharpish and go wandering till someone I knew found me and led me back home. I could add that I woke the next day in someone else's clothes, but I'm not that much of a moron.

It could have been worse - the tent could have been owned by some 6 foot meth head who returned to find me and thought that Christmas had come early for him .

Never been one to 'do' festivals. I spent enough years waking up cold, damp and covered in bits of grass etc and not entirely sure where I was or had been, during my formative youth when experimenting with mind altering substances and plenty of booze. Those were the days (I think )

Doesn't feel any colder than yesterday but it's a lot less miserable so that's sort of a win.

Real cold snap coming in, highs of 2C all week and into next week. On the plus side, no wind.

Long range forecast:

Conditions are most likely to be changeable through this period. Wetter and windier than average conditions are slightly more likely than normal, especially in the west and northwest. Temperatures are most likely to be near or above average overall, although this doesn't rule out some spells of cold weather and associated wintry hazards.

So could be dry could be wet, could be windy, could be calm, could be mild, could be cold.

Talk about hedging your bets.

Well if you could do that, without all the airport baggage check in queues and all that nonsense, you would wouldn't you. Ours (Leeds Liverpool) is frozen already. Won't be thick enough for the local chavs to use as a short cut, but I wouldn't talk them out of trying it. After tomorrow it may well be thick enough for the ducks, -5C is forecast for tonight.
