It is with a heavy heart that I'm selling this lovely turntable. I owned a tired version many years ago and it was the best TT I ever heard in my system, the only one that sounded night and day above a quality digital source. Unfortunately the lid was cracked and the side bits incomplete so I sold it with the intent to buy a clean one when it came up. It then took me 10 years to find one in good condition for under a grand, the MkIVs are very rare indeed. (There's chat online about the issues with the earlier versions.)

Unfortunately it's been sat here for 2 years and I'm not sure I'm ever going to use it as my record collection is not in the house and there's no space to put it anywhere so I might as well stick with rips and streaming and sell this to someone who can use it.

I'm selling this for a bargain £495 collected from N London (I'm near the M25/A1/A10/A406 if it helps).

I will demo it working but if you want to actually hear it you'll need to bring a phono stage as my new amp doesn't have one.

To note it has a budget AT cartridge fitted (not included in the sale) and my VST-V is not here so if you want to hear it near its full potential you'll need to bring a decent cart too.

Also, I've kept the heavy platter off in storage and removed the drive belt. The nextel coating is dry with no sticky areas so not an issue.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/f5fdbaaa174deb6c0e76b9d9f2032076.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/36884aac38aa84661d39694a92f659d5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/a9c8f362bc3089c75fd743543eb4fd49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/3db7b2a74b4102da8fb091e31c67ae72.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/bc350a008769cbe89b9be243c5beacbb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231021/dde3b341c0d76ebee8dda32d9e1444f0.jpg

Hi lawrence.
I am seriously pondering about this turntable!
I don't need it, and I can't really afford it: but I am a long-time fan of Thorens, and this appeals.
Just two questions: first, it looks as if the paint on the base plate has peeled - what has happened, and is this easily fixable do you think?
Second - the big one - is there any way you might consider a (sensible) offer?
I don't wish to waste your time; but I am still at the "careful consideration" stage, and can't promise I'll go ahead - but I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Many thanks,
David (theschoolmaster)

Hi David and thanks for the interest.

That's a good question about the peeling, the surface of the base and arm boards are nextel covered and this naturally breaks down over time. If it doesn't go sticky it's fine but many people like to remove it to make it look better. This would involve removing the boards which was my long term plan.

Regarding an offer I'm open to close offers but I would rather get it up to where the records are kept and use it rather than let it go cheap. There is a Shure VST-V with a new Jico stylus waiting up there to be fitted...

if its metal under the nextel it will be easy enough to get off and recoat with something.. wood or composite, then use a sander

I'm not actually sure what it is but yes if it's metal it should be a quick fix.

No rush, I've already sold the interesting/rare speakers I took to the Wam show and I'm wondering if this should be my interesting component for next year if it doesn't sell.

Hi Lawrence. I have cogitated, contemplated and carefully considered (strange that those words all begin with 'c' - I must get out more...). Although arguably, as we all know, justification for buying audio stuff is rarely to be found, I really think that in this case I must put brain before heart and decline :(. It's a lovely thing, but I don't need the turntable (I already have three other types working and in-use, and three awaiting repair/restoration); I have no room; and I have no cash going spare!
Thank you for your patience, and good luck with the sale - it deserves to find a very good home.

No worries I'm sure it will find a good home and if not I will use it in my second system.

And collected. Sad day but also glad it's gone to someone who will use it.
