Anything to look our for when buying ohe of these?

get as nice a one as you can. they are thick piano over brass cases. the 50 watt class a means they get very hot so check the inside hasnt been cremated etc.. if you can get one thats been updated by mf then all the better, if not the one you get you may still be able to get it done... at a price. check vc is ok etc.
these in good shape will drive ANY speaker

John Sampson of JS Audio has a good reputation with these and all other MF gear for any upgrades, servicing or repairs.

I think the MF would compare favourably against any used valve amp of similar or even much greater cost. Of course much will depend on music tastes, listening levels and choice of speaker. And it is reported to be able to drive pretty much anything, something you're never going to hear said about a comparably-priced valve amp.

And no valve reliability to be worried about.

A good amplifier is just that. Whether it is valve or transistor should not be discernible, so in theory it shouldn't make any difference. However, the perfect amplifier does not exist (as far as I know), so we put up with the flaws that give them 'character'.

All amps have their own character.

I haven't noticed physics change much over the decades, so the very good designs of yesteryear still are just that. Very good designs.

Simples.

I own three power amp options to switch between. I love doing that for the change in sonic character.

For that reason, if you are sensitive to changes in sound by changing amps, I recommend you accumulate a few options rather than repeatedly selling kit to supposedly move on.

Your latest new amp, if you had the option to switch back to the one you owned before, may impress. But after 2 or 3 months, if you still have the old one, you could well embrace it with loving arms once back in circuit.

Like the return of an old gilrfriend you know you always loved. OK, well maybe not quite the same. Just an analogy that came to mind at this particular moment;)

That's a lie. I actually own four options.

Just sayin'. The cheapest is still very much worth a swap in every now and then.

MF A370 was always pretty cool I reckon.
