I was recently 'cold called' by an insurance company who seemed to know that my household insurance was soon for renewal. Fortunately they cauught me in a good mood (otherwise I would have put the phone down straight away).

We went through my insurance requirements, then it occured to me that perhaps I ought to list some individual items that would fall outside the £2000 single item limit. These included my cameras, wristwatch and of course my audio system and music collection.

Whilst overall the audio system would be insured for £10,000 as would be the music collection, I wanted to be certain that since the audio system is a collection of items, no item was limited to the £2000 insurance limit. This meant I had to describe to the very helpful girl at the end of the phone, exactly what my system consisted of. To my surprise, she had heard of Quad (though she might have been thinking of 'quadrophonic'), but not surprisingly had not heard of EMT, Nagra, Mark Levinson, Thorens, SME, Ortophon etc. Well to cut a long story short, the system is insured such that it doesn't matter what item needs replacing, as long as it is within £10,000 it's covered.

We then moved onto my music collection. Again she asked me if I had any individual records or CDs that would be worth more than £2000. I answered no, and I suppose to appear friendly she asked me what my tastes in music were. Before I could answer properly she said "Do you have any Mud?" "Mud?" I replied, knowing full well what she meant, but needed a moment to think of a diplomatic reply. "Yes" she said "you know 'Tiger feet', I really like that song". I had to confess that I didn't have any Mud and was reminded of the saying: De gustibus non est disputandum, suum cuique, In matters of taste there is no discussion, each to their own.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

I don't like cold callers. I hope she was genuine, otherwise you might find a white van visits and takes all your stuff away "for repair" when you are out!

If you've ever requested a quote online or over the phone for insurance read the fine print as often the month of your enquiry will be stored and used each year on it's anniversary to trigger these kind of approaches. It's all legit; and quite profitable. How often do you cancel your insurance mid-year? Only when you buy a new car or move house. So it's a pretty reliable indicator, for years to come.

It's cool that your telesales person had tastes that extended outside of the top 40. Or maybe she just figured you were a child of the 70's Barry ;)

70s? Barry was already of 'finely matured vintage' long before that! :eyebrows: ;)

I can't believe that remark about Mud, though - freakin' hilarious!

What age was the (Mud fan) sales girl, I wonder?

I would have put her age in the early 20s. And yes Dave, it was all legit.

I have been invited to renew with my present insurer. To do so, they are asking for 6.5% more than the new insurer, but offering less cover. I anticipated this when I decided to go for the tele-sales offer.

The point of my post was that whilst we all might agree on what constitutes good qualtity audio reproduction equipment, we should not be judgemental on what is played. For all I know, the sales girl may own a £100,000 audio system and play nothing but the complete Mud catalogue. Perché no?
